Friday. July 26th 2019
A new electrical configuration of the test stand was decided and installed. The TGHT and TBHT were parallelized in order to deliver up to 600 + 600 Amperes to the p2n target.
Connections:
TGHT+: D
TGHT-: C
TBHT+: one cable to E and one cable to G (both going down to the coil terminal blocks, which are connected to the target terminal blocks through a copper short.
TBHT-: both cables to F. One 4/0 cable was run from F to H to achieve the same configuration as for TBHT+. The H terminal is connected to I (HV ground, conencted to the target copper heat shield) through a braided cable
One braided cable was connected from C to H so the target line should have the same potential as the TBHT/coil lines.
Saturday, July 27th
The current was ramped from the TBHT and TGHT in parallel up to 400+400=800A.
Sunday, July 28th
One leg of the target is glowing a bit, while the other doesn't. This suggests the current path is not straightforward as we planned.
Temperature measurements of the cables on top of the test stand were performed using a mini IR thermometer (FLUKE, borrowed from Arthur).
Temperature of the braided cable from C to H = ~50 °C --> This points to an imbalance of current between the two lines (TGHT and COIL lines). This might be alright.
Temperature of the braided cable from H to I = ~130 °C. This likely points to a short circuit between the target and the copper heat shield.
Monday, July 29th
In order to understand if the target is broken or touching the heat shield, we opened up the service cap.
- The braided cable from H to I was removed
- The braided cable from H to Q was disconnected
These two modifications were made so that the current cannot come back from the heat shield, but has to go through the target lines.
The 4/0 cables from the PS to the feedthroughs were removed so that we could confirm there is a short between C (target) and I(HV ground/heat shield). The 4/0 were than put back on the feedthrough connections.
Under advice of Dan Louie and Arthur, we did not change any configuration of the power supplies. We know that the current would go through the controls loop, but the impedance of this electronics should be high enough to sustain the current load.
At 3pm, the ramping was still increasing the current on the target, but one leg (the right one) was still glowing. By this time, the total current in the target assembly is ~500 amperes, so there should be no signs of any glowing happening. Probably there's something wrong with the target itself. We're opening up to check the status of the target.

The p2n target was taken out of the test stand for inspection. Comments and measurements on the container below:
- Initially, continuity measurements were mode between the target and heat shield (HS) while they were still in the test stand, and looks like they were shorted. However, after removing the HS from the test stand, no short was seen, not even after moving the target legs. Instead, we confirmed that the short was happening in the test stand, so some water lines were touching each other.
- The target look in one piece, except for the ion source that came off right after manufacturing. (see picture)
- The insulator connecting the bottom section of the ion source central current lead, to the HS, was broken (see picture)
- The annular disc of the connecting the inner and outer tube of the ion source was bulging outwards, maybe the ion source was heating too much while we put current in it (see picture).
- The screw connecting the top part of the central ion source current lead, is now of a blue-ish color
Resistance measurementts:
- Copper to copper: 1008 microOhm
- Copper to bottom flexy leg: 101 microOhm
- Bottom-to-top (flexy): 30-45 microOhm
- Target: 476 microOhm
- Copper to top flexy: 261 microOhm
- Copper to bottom flexy (left): 100 microOhm
- Copper to bottom flexy (right): 94 microOhm

Reminder. Mini pump still linked to SV1. DO NOT OPEN SV2!!!
The plan for today Thursday, June 25, 2020 is:
- Optimize (tune) the beam to FC0 and then to FC6.
Compensate beam energy by substracting the value of anode voltage to the high voltage. Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:07: FEBIAD is on cathode bias
- Perform an efficiency measurement to know the correct work of the mini pump and also the time needed for 1 measurement.
- Perform at least 3 efficiency measurements of the same configuration as a sanity check on the reproducibility of the measurements.
The system is prone to trip if the build-up pressure for the gas lines is higher than 7e-6T. I will try to wait as long as reasonably possible to make sure the gas lines are pumped to good vacuum levels.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 12:19: New values for TPS:Q1,Q2,Q3,Q4. Better beam shape on RMP0A and 0B
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 12:33: I think there is something wrong with this FEBIAD as the mass scan does not show any peaks.
I've noticed the word document from Aaron, and he observed peaks likely from surface ionized species. Furthermore there is no anode current readback on epics nor on the power supply.
Possbile culprits. The anode is not well attached to the 9-pin. The cathode temperature is extremely low and there are no electron-impact ionized species.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 12:52: Power supply is on cathode bias mode as well as all the service cap wiring.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 13:03: Back to old tunes. Mass scan still showing only surfaced ionized species.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 14:30: Mass scan for 0V finished. Peaks at 38 and 28 u. 38 is Potassium, but 28 is odd, closest surface ionized species might be Al27 with an ionization potential of about 5.8 eV.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:20 : Mass scan for 100V finished. Peaks still at 38 and 28 but with different intensities. Now there are features what seem to be 18 and 14. Water and N respectively.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:03: Manually tap TBHT to 290 A.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:31: FC6 signal increased. Anode leakage current still showing 0.0 mA.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:35: Manually tap TBHT to 295 A
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:58: Mass scan completed. More peaks showed up.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:35: Manually tap TBHT to 300A. Anode leakage current still showing 0.0 mA.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:30: Manually tap TBHT to 305A. Anode leakage current still showing 0.0 mA.
Increasing Anode to 500 V, now there is a reading of 1.2mA. However, there were sparks on the high voltage so this current might be a leakage current from the high voltage.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:34: Lowering to 300A to run a mass scan.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:59: Similar mass spectrum, the anode current is meaningless.

SV5 closes the gas line segment to the ion source. The response on the ion current indicates that once the leakage lines are closed, there is still some gas in the lines causing the slow decrease on ion current.
There is approximately a factor of 2 increase for m=28 when the argon is used.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 17:24: FC6 reading keeps decreasing and it's already below the initial current.
I suspect that the ion current that was read when the coil was changed corresponds to superposition of previously ionized species and the coil adjusted those charges. Once flushed, the neutral atoms will established a new equilibrium.
NOTE: Will setting the anode to 0 V flushed the source? Test it tomorrow.
Friday, June 26, 2020, 17:43: FC6 signal is increasing. I'll leave it as is.
Saturday, June 27, 2020, 11:47: FC6=1.06e-11A. IG1=3.40e-6T. Similar to the value of the current prior to the efficiency measurement.
The plan for today Saturday, June 27, 2020 is:
- Perform an efficiency for coil 20. This might be a long measurement if the value has to increases again. If after 1.5 h the signal still shows a mismatch, then I'll try to flush the source by setting the anode to 0V
- Redo efficiency measurement.
- Try another coil value.
