1705   Tuesday, May 01, 2018, 10:54 Keith C NgITWRepair  2a2 window installation and beamtube repair

Yesterday we installed the 2a2 window, the drive screw was torqued until 70 ft-lbs and we stopped, the yoke is not fully closed to its hard stop with roughly 7/8" to 3/4" still to go. Similar to identical conditions to 2a3 beamline window install, see https://elog.triumf.ca/TIS/RH-ISAC/647 for that install. Otherwise clamp looks centered and installed correctly.

Concerns with the cooling lines for the window WRT to the base of the shielding plug: There is no jog bend indicated on drawings for the transition of the window cooling lines from beamline center to the corner of the shield plug penetration. See photo for cooling line position on initial removal of shielding plug. It was decided to not add a jog for the shield plug and to carefully reinsert it being mindful of the cooling lines.  The shielding plug has a chamfer on the corner to allow the cooling lines to be routed to the top.

A new beam tube cradle is being manufactured where the old one will removed and the new one swapped with the beam tube in situ. Both sides of the window still need to be leak checked.

prep'ed area for work:

- removed shield plug from window clamp area

- inspected clamp from tunnel side and from top of target station: video recorder was not working, will try again tomorrow.

- corrosion seen on beam pipe cradles, see photos. corrosion also seen on beampipe, clamp and vacuum tank. will try to vaccuum loose rust tomorrow.

note: gamma spec of rust, white powder from RPG located in \\trwindata\groups\remote handling\Documents\2014\2A3 Window folder (added pdfs as attachments 2014 mar 4)

Leak detector is connected to ITW TP4. LD Base leak rate 0.0XE-09 atm.cc/sec. Helium line is connected to existing window leak check 1/8 " copper tube. Applied 18psi helium for 1 minute. No response on LD. The window seal is good on ITW vacuum vessel.

1710   Friday, May 04, 2018, 11:21 David WangITWRepair  2A2 winodw leak check in TH

Anders and I leak checked new 2A2 window seal on ITW side. Leak detector was connected  to ITW TP4.  Base  leak rate 0.0Xe-9 atm.cc/sec. base pressure 0.0xe-4 torr.  Sprayed 15-20 psi directly underneath 2A2 window by using exist 2a2 window leak check copper tube. The leak detector got response in 5 seconds when helium was applied. the leak rate was 5xe-6 atm.cc/sec. Once the helium source was closed, the leak rate dropped quickly back to base level. To confirm the leak is at window , I sprayed 15 psi helium around all top flange seals of TM and entrance module.  There was no direct response during the spray( about 1.5- 2 minutes). There was a weak slow up response (up to 1.0 xe-7 atm.cc/sec) which was started after 1.5 minutes of spray. The weak response is cause by helium drift in my view.   Our conclusion is the 2A2 window seal on ITW side is not perfectly sealed.  The elak we saw on LD is ture , and it is located on window.  The station will be vented soon for shielding plug moving back. .

  • Drop test performed April 5, 2019 repeat of previous test with the addition of a aluminum sleeve (0.05" thick) inside the pail between pail and target.

New UN rated pail with 9.55 kg target, 1.2 kg 16 gauge Al sleeve (10.75 OD x 14.75" tall), 3 liters of water with red food coloring no sealant on gasket.

First drop standard drop test from 1.2m onto latch

Second drop test 1.2m onto bottom of pail

Third drop 1.2m onto side of pail

Drops 4-6 1.2m onto lid

Pail was left inverted for an hour after the first three drops with no leaks after 1 hour.

No leaks after the remaining 3 drops .Bottom very damaged suggesting need for protective disc in bottom of pail.

Pictures can be found in docushare Collection-24627

  • Drop tests performed May 2, 2019 with 9.7 kg target, 1.346 kg of mixed module and target components, sleeve and disc. First drop on latch from 1.2m, no leak, second drop straight on bottom from 1.2m, no leak, third drop on side from 1.2m leak. Drop test described in more detail in document drop test witness document on docushare. Pictures and video in docushare collection 24626.

  2427   Monday, March 13, 2023, 11:25 Carla BabcockITE/ITWDevelopment  10kOhm resistors installed in ITE/ITW faraday cages

On Sept. 14 2022, a 10kOhm 30W resistor was installed in each target station faraday cage, in line with the HV bias supply. This was an effort to reduce the current draw from the BIAS supply and protect the power supply controls cards which have been repeatedly breaking due to HV sparks (we think). In the end we still broke cards after the installation, so it doesn't seem to have helped. See below for details on the electrical side:

At 30kV, HV currents are around 100-150uA, meaning the voltage drop over the resistor is around 1.5V. When operating at higher voltages, with higher current draw, the voltage across the resistor could be over 2V and we could get into a situation where it would have an effect outside the normal adjustments needed on the mass separator. We made this decision based on the fact that the power supply's setting resolution is on the order of 1 x 10-4.

When the resistance of the water changes, this affects the current draw from the power supply and this in turn affects the voltage over this resistor. Based on some sample numbers of running times, there is not much variation in the current except from sparks and if there is some issue, like water leaking between HV and ground. During normal running, the voltage change across the resistor should be less than 0.5V during normal operation. This is on the same order as the 8 hour stability of the power supply.

Edi and I inspected roughing pump ITM MP1, primary backup pump ITHMP1, and secondary backup pump ITHMP2. We checked oil level and color on all pumps.  Refilled lubricant to ITMMP1. ITHMP1 and MP2 oil level is fine. ITH MP1 oil color is darker than MP2. But, both them are ok still. Shielding block has been restored after the job.
