 Fault: 13334

Tuesday, July 28, 2020, 12:00: Leak discovered in ISAC Test Stand MB1 PS. Appears to be coming from hose barb soldered connection to heat sink of pass bank. Pass bank will need to be disassembled and heat sink soldered on a workbench.

Entry  Wednesday, July 22, 2020, 08:56, Luca Egoriti, P2N test, HP-SIS, ITE, TM4, , , In progress, p2n heating test - electrical feedthrough configuration ISACteststand_TMwiring.pptxP2N-TestStand_20200722.pngP2N-TestStand_1200A.png

The electrical feedthroughs at the top of the test stand module were reconfigured to deliver up to 1200A to the p2n target.

1) The two COIL lines (one + and one -) were disconnected from their terminals E and F

2) The TBHT terminals (two + and two -) were disconnected from A and B

3) The two TBHT positive terminals are connected to E and G respectively. The two TBHT negative terminals are both connected to F, and a 4/0 cable is run from F to H

4) The three TGHT + terminals are left connected to D. The three TGHT - terminals are left connected to C

In the vacuum chamber, COIL and TGHT terminals of the same polarity are shorted by means of thick copper bars specifically machined to match the test stand terminals geometry. The test can proceed by ramping both TGHT and TBHT up to 600 A each, possible at the same time and speed.

The wiring diagram is shown in the attached picture

Extech measurements before heating (µOhm):

TGHT Left leg Ta-Cu: 205, 215, 212, 201.

TGHT Right leg Ta-Cu: 287, 295, 275, 292.

TGHT Ta legs: 596, 606, 597, 598.

TBHT A: 1470, 1471.

TBHT B: 1469, 1469.

Rampup finished around 2PM, looks good. Around 300+300A the TBHT voltage limit prevented the TBHT current to increase, and instead it decreased. Aaron ramped it down, adjusted the voltage limit and proceeded without issues.

The water flow and temperatures looked fine.

Attached the plots and a picture at 1200A

Frank Song checked for us the status of the test stand. Pictures looked good, despite the reflections, I can't see sign of the flexy legs glowing. Thank you Frank!

The voltage on the TGHT has dropped 0.02 V, and the voltage on the TBHT (COIL lines) has dropped by 0.04V in 20 hours. I think it's negligible, just a sign of some sintering.

The cooling parameters are as follows:

Input 1: 28.05 C

Input 2: 8.49 lpm

Input 3: 27.79 C

Input 4: 11.14 lpm

Input 5: 27.72 C

Input 6: 3.90 lpm

Input 7: 27.78 C

Input 8: 7.79 lpm

This morning I saw the target for my first time and not in a picture. I could see a mild glow in the center of both flexy legs, while the external foils seemed cold. This seems really good, as expected!

Water parameters were checked:

Input 1: 27.75 C

Input 2: 8.38 lpm

Input 3: 27.52 C

Input 4: 11.13 lpm

Input 5: 27.37 C

Input 6: 3.93 lpm

Input 7: 27.53 C

Input 8: 7.78 lpm

Thursday, July 30, 2020, 23:02

Ramp down terminated around 7pm, the current was ramped smoothly but the voltage from both PS (TGHT and TBHT) had some bumps in correspondance with vacuum response. Maybe something was shorting? A thorough inspection of the heat shield and target might tell more.

Thanks Fernando for ramping down!

Wednesday, July 01, 2020, 11:50: FC6=6.89e-12A. IG1=2.76e-6T.

FC6 has dropped 60% and the vacuum 15% with the respect to the last set of measurements.

Maybe the mass is not Ar+ but K? Or the decrease in pressure has this large correlation to FC6 magnitude.

Wednesday, July 01, 2020, 12:41: Coil sweep up and down completed.

Wednesday, July 01, 2020, 12:47: SV3, SV4, and SV5 close

IG1=2.59e-6T. The gas bottles are definitely running out, as there is no much change in pressure whether they are opened or closed

Wednesday, July 01, 2020, 13:15: Coil sweep completed.

Wednesday, July 01, 2020, 13:22: FC6 and IG1 increasing. Probably due to the coil still at 90A. reducing coil current.

Entry  Thursday, June 25, 2020, 08:57, Fernando Maldonado, Test FEBIAD, HP-FEBIAD, , , 38295-8, 42752-5, Done, FEBIAD development part 1/3

Reminder. Mini pump still linked to SV1. DO NOT OPEN SV2!!!

The plan for today Thursday, June 25, 2020 is:
  1. Optimize (tune) the beam to FC0 and then to FC6.
  2. Compensate beam energy by substracting the value of anode voltage to the high voltage. Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:07: FEBIAD is on cathode bias
  3. Perform an efficiency measurement to know the correct work of the mini pump and also the time needed for 1 measurement.
  4. Perform at least 3 efficiency measurements of the same configuration as a sanity check on the reproducibility of the measurements.

The system is prone to trip if the build-up pressure for the gas lines is higher than 7e-6T.  I will try to wait as long as reasonably possible to make sure the gas lines are pumped to good vacuum levels.

New idea: Screenshot e-log on the ISAC TS team notebook: 20-06-26 FEBIAD development day  (Web view)

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 08:38:  TGHT / TBHT @ 580 / 280. Coil @ 0A. Vacuum @ 3.71e-06T. BIAS / EE / EZL @ 30 / -1.5 / 13 kV. Anode @ 100 V.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 10:34: TP6 tripped. Closed IV4 closed and reset it. TP6 on

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 10:41:IV4 open

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 10:54: Optimizing beam to FC0 with current tune.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 12:19: New values for TPS:Q1,Q2,Q3,Q4. Better beam shape on RMP0A and 0B

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 12:33: I think there is something wrong with this  FEBIAD as the mass scan does not show any peaks.

I've noticed the word document from Aaron, and he observed peaks likely from surface ionized species. Furthermore there is no anode current readback on epics nor on the power supply.

Possbile culprits. The anode is not well attached to the 9-pin. The cathode temperature is extremely low and there are no electron-impact ionized species.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 12:52: Power supply is on cathode bias mode as well as all the service cap wiring.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 13:03:  Back to old tunes. Mass scan still showing only surfaced ionized species.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 14:30:  Mass scan for 0V finished. Peaks at 38 and 28 u. 38 is Potassium, but 28 is odd, closest surface ionized species might be Al27 with an ionization potential of about 5.8 eV.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:20 : Mass scan for 100V finished. Peaks still at 38 and 28 but with different intensities. Now there are features  what seem to be 18 and 14. Water and N respectively.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:03: Manually tap TBHT to 290 A.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:31: FC6 signal increased. Anode leakage current still showing 0.0 mA.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:35: Manually tap TBHT to 295 A

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:58: Mass scan completed. More peaks showed up.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:35: Manually tap TBHT to 300A. Anode leakage current still showing 0.0 mA.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:30: Manually tap TBHT to 305A. Anode leakage current still showing 0.0 mA.

Increasing Anode to 500 V, now there is a reading of 1.2mA. However, there were sparks on the high voltage so this current might be a leakage current from the high voltage.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:34: Lowering to 300A to run a mass scan.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:59: Similar mass spectrum, the anode current is meaningless.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:00: Mass 28 will be used for efficiency measurements.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:15: SV3 closed.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:20: SV4 closed.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:38: SV5 closed.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:39: SV1 opened (mini pump)

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:41: Opening and closing SV3 and SV4.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:45: Opening SV5. System tripped.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:51: I will open the cage  to see if the mini pump is on.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:58: The mini-pump was off and unplug. Now connected and running.

 Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:00: SV1 open.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:10: SV1 closed

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:10: SV5 open. Negligible response on IG1.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:13: SV5 off. SV3 and SV4 open.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:14: SV1 open.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:17: SV1 closed.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:17: SV5 open/close/open. Maximum vacuum 6e-6T. This is very closed to the hard-coded interlock. Everything is off, so it will be better to have the vacuum response at least near 4 or 5 e-6T.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:26: SV3 closed.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:31: SV4 closed.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:41: SV5 closed. SV1 open. Wait 15 min

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 19:02: Vacuum response 5e-6.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 19:02: Auto-ramping TGHT / TBHT to 580 / 290 A @ 2 A per min.

The plan for today Friday, June 26, 2020 is:

  2. Mass scan at nominal values
  3. Send m=28 beam to FC6
  4. Perform an efficiency measurement to know the correct work of the mini pump and also the time needed for 1 measurement.
  5. Perform at least 3 efficiency measurements of the same configuration as a sanity check on the reproducibility of the measurements.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 11:31: BIAS/EZL/EE @ 30/13/1.5 kV. Anode @ 150 V

Friday, June 26, 2020, 11:58: Mass scan completed.

 Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:0: Magnet set to m=28. FC9=1.17e-9A. IG1=3.42e-6T

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:17: SV3 closed.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:24: No effect on FC6 reading.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:24: SV4 closed.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:35: FC6=5.5e-10T and seems to  flatten.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:44: FC6=5.33e-10.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:45: SV5 closed. FC6=5.18e-10 and decreasing.

SV5 closes the gas line segment to the ion source. The response on the ion current indicates that once the leakage lines are closed, there is still some gas in the lines causing the slow decrease on ion current.

There is approximately a factor of 2 increase for m=28 when the argon is used.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:52: SV1 on.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:52: SV3 open/closed x5

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:53: SV4 open/closed x5

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:54: SV3 and SV4 opened.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:56: SV1 closed

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:57: SV1 opened

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:59 SV1 closed. SV5 open/closed x5

Friday, June 26, 2020, 13:00: SV5 opened.  No trip!!!

Ion current increases when the valve is open. This indicated the build up pressure being release into the ion source. Max FC6=4.17e-9 A. Now decreasing.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 13:07: FC6 reading and IG1 reading approaching values previous to efficiency measurement.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 13:13: FC6=1.17e-9A. IG1=3.47e-6.

Total time for 1 efficiency measurement 50 minutes. The largest wait occurs for the current to stabilize.

Approximately 30 minutes when closing the valves, 15 minutes when opening them, and 10 minutes for roughing the lines.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 13:30: Same measurement for (my) sanity check. FC6=1.16e-9. IG1=3.51e-6T

Total time for eff measurement=43 minutes.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 15:33: By averaging all readings, the gas signal corresponds to 57.7% of the entire signal.  There is an increase factor of  2.36. No efficiency can be estimated as the signal is not from the gas bottle.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 15:43: Switching to mass 40 (Ar+1).

Friday, June 26, 2020, 15:56: I think I am set on mass 40 (Ar+) The signal varies when  adjusting the voltage. Proceeding to efficiency measurement.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 15:59: FC6=2.49e-11. IG1=3.67e-6T

Friday, June 26, 2020, 17:12 :SV5 open. No trip!!!.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 17:22 :  FC6=3.7e-11. IG1=4.30e-6T

Friday, June 26, 2020, 17:24:  FC6 reading keeps decreasing and it's already below the initial current.

I suspect that the ion current that was read when the coil was changed corresponds to superposition of previously ionized species and the coil adjusted those charges. Once flushed, the neutral atoms will established a new equilibrium.

NOTE: Will setting the anode to 0 V flushed the source? Test it tomorrow.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 17:43: FC6 signal is increasing. I'll leave it as is.

Saturday, June 27, 2020, 11:47: FC6=1.06e-11A. IG1=3.40e-6T. Similar to the value of the current prior to the efficiency measurement.

The plan for today Saturday, June 27, 2020 is:

  1. Perform an efficiency for coil 20. This might be a long measurement if the value has to increases again. If after 1.5 h the signal still shows a mismatch, then I'll try to flush the source by setting the anode to 0V
  2. Redo efficiency measurement.
  3. Try another coil value.

Saturday, June 27, 2020, 11:52: FC6=1.06e-11. IG1=3.40e-6T

Saturday, June 27, 2020, 11:55: SV3 closed.
