Wednesday, March 06, 2013

The Cool Transfer Line (CTL) test target is installed for thermal tests. Drawing number is ITD0431 REV A.

Thermocouple channels are as follows:

T1: Cu block on CTL
T2: Heat Shield above CTL
T3: Heat Shield cooling water Supply
T4: Heat Shield cooling water Return

Cooling water is in Evap2 supplied to the cooling line that goes directly to the area on the Heat Shield above the CTL.

Test results attached.

The CTL test target was installed again for a second thermal test. CTL block fastened to HS with 1 in lbs. A small piece of Ta-foil of 0.001" thickness was used between the CTL Cu-block and the Ta transfer line to reduce the heat transfer..

Thermocouples were re-attached to CTL and Heat Shield (see above for channels #s).

See attached graph (PDF) for details.

The source of the poor vacuum in the backing line seems to be related to a dirty filter. We will try to find a replacement filter next week.

The problem seem to have started September 17th, when backing preassure CG1A went from 40 mTorr to 130 mTorr. CG1B remained around 30 mTorr.

With the help of Anthony Ip from vacuum group, the problem was diagnosed to be the roughing pump itself. The pump was replaced and pumping improved. The chamber can now be evacuated and turbo ready to start in less than 10 minutes.

The filter is not stocked by vacuum group and could not be replaced.

Last week parts of the roughing line was cleaned by Rick. The PVC roughing line has been replaced with a SST bellows. The SST bellows is KF25 and should be replaced by a KF40 bellows in the long run.

It was found that after the last process, Evap#2 has broken insulators - the cylinder insulator that supports the target centre legs and the block insulator that supports the terminals.

Informed Anders/Rick.

 Friday, October 03, 2014

  • Insulators replaced. Torque 55 in lbs on all fasteners.
  • Cleaned TGHT terminals with scotch-brite and methanol.
  •  New (clean) heat shield prepared WO-39230-2.
  • Re-installed right side heat shield alignment pin (previously removed to allow line of sight to the target).

The reading is consistent between CG1A and CG1B, which simplifies pump down.

Monday, March 14, 2016, 13:12: Stopped turbo pump

After EVAP2 was vented the thermocouple problem was fixed: it was the wire at on connector inside the box not making proper contact. The lid of the heat shield was also replaced since the one initially mounted had no holes, so one couldn't see the center block. Restarted pumping down at 4:30pm. Just started again the autoramp program: TGHT set to 300A (for the time being) and TBHT to 230A. Temperature measurements will resume tomorrow morning.

Raised the TGHT at 620A. The TBHT was already set at 230A. The temperature is at 1902 deg C. As per John's instructions the target will condition at these setpoints over the week-end.

Today, lowered the TGHT from 620A (at 1894 deg C) to 300A.  TBHT is still at 230A.

 Cooling down the target.
