Beginning of May:

The cabling on the top of the test stand was changed to adapt for P2N testing. The TGHT and COIL PS were disconnected, and their DC cable terminals were connected instead to the TDK-LAMBDA P2Nheaters. The configuration on top of the ITS module is the following:

TBHT+ = A

TBHT- = B

MASTER+ = D

MASTER- = C

SLAVE+ = G/E

SLAVE- = F/H

Friday May 6th, afternoon

Once the pressure was almost stable in the low E-6 torr range, the first rampup was conducted up to ~600 A and the I,V parameters looked similar to previous P2N units. More tests to full current happening next week.

Monday, May 09, 2022, 09:29

P2N unit is being heated now, the automatic ramping utility is ramping the TDK-LAMBDAs while the TBHT is being increased manually.

Monday, May 09, 2022, 10:31

A voltage event happened, the TBHT voltage increased frmo 0.64 V to 0.73 V, while the P2Nheater dropped from  1.73 V to 1.56 V.

Monday, May 09, 2022, 12:19

At P2NHT=950A it was noticed that one leg of the P2N was glowing much more than the other, the ramping was first stopped and then ramped down.

Now the P2NHT=282A and TBHT=47A

Tuesday, May 10, 2022, 09:32

Test stand vented and target inspected, there is no obvious sign of damage or misconnection on the tantalum assembly. Some resistance measurements were taken across target elements and connections:

Screw on copper L to bottom flexy leg L = 117

Bottom flexy leg L to top flexy leg L = 24 / 0 (?)

top flexy leg L to bottom elephant leg L = 64

elephant L to elephant R = 360

top flexy leg R to bottom elephant leg R = 69

Bottom flexy leg R to top flexy leg R = 0 (?)

Screw on copper R to bottom flexy leg R = 125

Tuesday, May 10, 2022, 11:39

This morning, the target was inspected but nothing major was noticed, hence it was put back in the ITS for heating.

Tuesday, May 10, 2022, 17:40

Target being ramped: so far all good, total current in P2NHT=690A and TBHT=116A

A current measuring clamp was used to measure current in the 4/0 cables. The only bad thing is that the slave outputs half the current than the master, making the cables hotter (30deg vs 24deg).

Currents:

A-B ~116 A (TBHT)

C~468

E~124

G~102

Tuesday, May 10, 2022, 17:45

Event: reduction in P2NHT voltage and increase in TBHT voltage. After letting the PS ramp, it was noticed that the P2NHT voltage accelerated its increased, and the left leg started glowing like the previous time. The current was immediately ramped down, but still there was a voltage spike upwards in the P2NHT.

While the leg was glowing hot, the current between feedthroughs H (P2NHT-) and I (HV common) was 90A. Now that the "episode" is not there any more, the current is zero

Wednesday, May 11, 2022, 10:55

The previous P2N target had stainless steel screws at the bottom, where the copper L-shaped connector and the ta foil legs connect, which might have bene the cause of the gap opening and voltage increase. Now, the target manufactured for the previous beamtime is used, which does not have the cuts on the elephant ears but they are OK since don't interfere with the new IS cup design, and are ~3mm away from it.

Wednesday, May 11, 2022, 13:57

 Start heating the new P2N assembly

Wednesday, May 11, 2022, 14:58

 Stopped at

P2NHT= 501 A

TBHT= 95 A

All currents seem to be flowing in the right path, with no current in the jumper between H-I

Wednesday, May 11, 2022, 15:26

Voltage step in P2NHT and TBHT happened again. Current sum:

A = 125 A

B = 125 A

C= 470 A

D=474 A

E = 118 A

F= 85 A

G = 95 A

H = 132 A

Short G-E = 5 A

Short F-H = 3 A

Jumper H-I = 62 A

The most likely explanation of this jump is that the IS tip touches the plasma electrode as shown in the drawing below which would result in some current flowing through the jumper, more investigations are needed

Thursday, May 12, 2022, 08:19

Test stand opened, there is some sign of burn in the plasma electrode, but it's hard to say if it's because they were touching. Aaron added a tantalum 0.040" shim to the plasma electrode to distance it further from the target IS tube

Tuesday, May 03, 2022, 10:07

In the past few days, the ITS has been reconfigured for P2N operation:

  •  The two ATTS PS were moved to the ITS rack, one on top of the TGHT and the other instead of the COIL
  • AC rewiring was necessary since the breakers were not connected to the wires. Marshall was on it and re-connected
  • Ray has configured the ATTS PLC to be compatible with P2N operation in ITS
  • The controls cables to the MASTER and SLAVE supplies have been configured: the cables come from the front of the PS rack, so we could close the back and top cage if we wanted. One control cable was connected to the relay to send the proper ENABLE signal only when the ITS vacuum and water flow are OK
  • DC cables re-routed for P2N parallel operation:
    MASTER+ = D
    MASTER- = C
    SLAVE+ = E,G
    SLAVE- = F,H
    TBHT+ = A
    TBHT- = B

Wiring which was changed to run the mass marker tests has been reverted:

  • anode bias cable connected to "B"
  • tube negative attached to HV common through "B" to "F" connection

Ready for cathode biased FEBIAD operation.

Entry  Monday, April 04, 2022, 20:44, Carla Babcock, , , , , , , , Change from 9-pin connectors to 5-pin connectors 5pin_pinout_April42022.png

Swapped the old 9pin connectors out and replaced with 2 5-pin connectors, same as on the modules.

See attached for current pin out diagram. Many of the wires are too short to reach the bottom sockets, so wires 2, 8, 9 are not connected in the connector. 4 spots are empty on connector 2 (right).  (6, 7) and (4, 5) are twisted pairs. Unused wires are tapped up out of the way, but we should improve this, the tape may come loose due to heat and then the wires could present an HV risk. (Update: added some wire to hold them in place. Slightly better...)

Need to either extend the wires, or put in new ones. All wires are grounded on the rack.

In addition, there are two screws in each connector which are floating right now. Need to make a connection for them but should be ok if we dont go to really high voltages.

Thursday, January 13, 2022, 14:22 :  1.3e-10 approximately Cs on FC6. Optimal EE -2700V, slightly higher than standard on EZL.

 Ramping down to Na on the magnet, found 5 pA:

23NasettingsJan132022.PNG

 Started a ramp up to nominal heater values (TGHT-500 A  TBHT-230 A) but too much HV sparking so aborted at TGHT-299 A and TBHT-230 A. Ramped HV down to 16kV to get sparking to slow down.

Ramped quickly back up to 30kV to get FC readings but since there is so much sparking, we decided to ramp everything down and open the vacuum chamber.

PLAN:

1. ramp down heaters, vent vacuum, open chamber.

2. Try to tape the thermocouples up so that they are further from ground.

3. Try to crimp the bottom of the mass marker tubes, and bend them upwards so they aren't facing ground.

4. Add a dedicated ground to the COIL power supply.

Monday, January 17, 2022, 14:00: HV ramped to 20kV, EZL 10kV, EE, -1500V. Ramping TGHT/TBHT to previous values of 250A/200A.

Monday, January 17, 2022, 16:51 : Back to previous heater values, didn't find any Cs on FC6 so went to Na. Tuned and found the tune the opposite of last time, all voltage wanted to go lower. Found 736pA, maybe better than last time because I tuned quite a bit.

Monday, January 17, 2022, 18:00: Ramping to TGHT 300A, TBHT 230A, where we had sparking problems last time.

Monday, January 17, 2022, 18:17 : So far no sparking issues so I will start to heat up the mass markers. One spark about 4 mins after ramping up, after that maybe 10 sparks/40mins or so. Too many....

Monday, January 17, 2022, 19:20 : Got to 20A on the mass markers, will ramp down now.

Friday, January 28, 2022, 18:49 : Yesterday opened the HV rack to re-start data logging on the thermocouples. This morning ramped everything up and started the heaters. Found the Na current around 250A on the target, but abandoned looking for it because the TGHT heating was causing lots of outgassing, which was causing bias sparks. In addition, there is a weird effect where the Na current spikes, then slowly decreases over the course of an hour or something, to values lower than before the heating. Could this be an indication of some thermal issues, like cold spots where things condense? Or something is drifting. The HV common point on the target is at the mass markers now instead of at the exit of the ion source, but I can't imagine you would see such a large difference. The thermocouples do not change in value during these long slow declines. In light of this, decided to just go up and see what the thermocouples read. Settings were close to what is shown above - bit lower on the HV but magnet the same.

Connection of TBHT negative to HV common removed (R4 in circuit diagram). Labelled and put in MRO bucket.

Anode connection moved to feedthrough J.

Rewired multipin patch panel. Left some grounded (HVC) wires hanging, should probably make this nice later.

Noted on arrival to startup the ISAC TS some cleaning of the area was required. Optics PS & all PS quickly checked. OK / Dry.

Use caution when HV is to be applied later. Expect conditioning / noise from the cage.

LP-SIS modified w/ 2 holes on the center block to accept a pair of Ta tubes that are run to the coil PS.

*Note modified HS plates at the ion source to accommodate the LP-SIS (Has a slightly bent ionizer tube from the drilling)

-Plan to shut down the ISAC TS on 12/23/2021 for the holidays.

Thermocouples are installed.

Swapped top and bottom connector on target side multipin to match up with wires. Added kapton tape where things were touching. TC#3 (ROI) maybe won't work, was very twisted. Not sure if I got all the twists.
