Thu Mar 31 15:19:51 2011: SiC#25 was made sometime in December of 2010. It is now in the target module and ready to be conditioned.
Mon Apr 18 18:17:05 2011: It was found later that no salt was added to this target after it came out from the test stand. However, there were enough 40Ca and 39K for tuning (See attachment#1 for the big mass scan). Once the P+ is back, the yields will be measured.
Fri Apr 29 15:30:26 2011: Low 27Al was ionized from the surface for some reason. However, after the green laser was shone into the extraction tube, more 27Al was produced. Then, the laser was turned off, the target continued to surface ionizing 27Al. There could be a blockage from the rhenium (Re) ionizer foil. Jens L. will investigate this further and do a test with the lasers and the rhenium foil.

|
This afternoon, Darwin prepared in the hot lab fume hood the two UO2 slurries to be cut into P2N target discs. Later, I took over cutting both slurries. A total of 49 annular discs were cut and loaded into the P2N graphite container.
The discs thickness was measured by stacking 5 discs on each other, and measuring their thickness in two points.
#discs = 49
Average disc thickness = 0.453mm
Empty cartridge weight = 9.42 g
Full cartridge weight = 39.86 g
UO2+C weight = 30.44 g
The unused material plus the cutting scrap were left in a zip lock bag on a shelf in the right hand side of the fume hood. The center scraps and the loaded target were placed in a plastic tray on the top shelf. The used tools and scales were left on the right of the working area, the napkins on the bottom were put into the garbage bag (inside the fume hood) and replaced, while the only napkin left is the one with the target information (recorded in attached picture). |

First batch of UO2/C mixture of carbonization (Stock# 2011_A):
UO2 used = 50.120g (left overs + container = 411.23g)
C(grv) used = 10.653g (or 21.25% w/w)
Mass of organics = 4.842g (or 9.66% w/w)
Mass of dried cast = 47.420g
Waste collected in jar = 18.195g (including UO2, C and Org)
Waste accountable for UO2 = 12.57g
The carbonization process started from May 26 to June 4 (9 days).
See attachment #1 and #2 for the striptools during the UO2/C carbonization
Total Mass UC2 flakes = 35.310g
Fri Jun 17 11:56:15 2011
Attempted to make the second batch of UO2/C mixture of carbonization on June 13, but it failed. The milling jar gasket seal partially came out during the high speed milling. As a result, the UO2/C mixture squirted out and contaminated the planetary mill (See attachment #3 & #4). RPG and all other groups were informed. The planetary mill and the lab were properly cleaned up (see attachment #5), no activities were found after the cleaning. Attachments #6, #7, #8 are some of the discussion about the UO2 spill.
All the UO2 taken out from the container (50.23g) is accountable for waste.
June 28, 2011 - Re-making 2nd batch of UO2/C mixture was successful.
Stock#2011_B:
UO2 used = 50.29g
C(grv) used = 10.0g
Mass of Organics = 4.84g
Mass of Dried green = 71.96g (the cast was let dry over night <24hrs due to time restriction. It might not be completely dried as a result of such heavy mass remained. However, the UO2 waste was very minimum, <5.0g)
Total Mass UC2 flakes = 56.853g

Wednesday, August 01, 2012, 09:37, Pierre Bricault, ITE-TM4-UO#3, LP-FEBIAD, ITE, TM4, , , Problems/Solutions, Short has developed while lowering the cathode heater
|
On tuesday July we lower the cathode heater to swap the anode-cathode bias. While lowering the cathode heater a short on the anode developed.
The polarity swap was not possible because the target/tube assembly has also a short to common.
We return the configuration has it was and we added two 100 Ohms: 5 W resistor between the common and the heaters to prevent current to flow back to the common.
The anode short disappear during the cathode and target heating. |
