44   Friday, October 28, 2011, 14:42 Bevan MossSouth Hot-CellMaintenanceTM4 Leak check on service cap feed through

After Chad and Davids leak check results from the containment box it was decided to perform a leak check on the feed through stem in the service cap. This is a known point of failure on TM1 and the same design flaw is likely in TM4. Once the service cap was open a visual inspection was performed and some oxidization of the copper line on the tube heater (+) circuit was observed (see attached pictures). The leak check was performed with the cart at a base pressure of 0.0 x 10^-4 Torr and base leak rate of 0.0 10 x 10^-9 atm cc/sec. A total of 4 joints were checked and no response was found. The service cap was then flooded with helium and once again no response was found. It was decided to give the module a clean bill of health, make note of the baseline test from the conditioning station, and continue to monitor the circuit.

November 15, 2011 removed TaC#1 from TM1 and inspected TM1 for any obivous signs of trouble (Problems with EE at end of run).

Upon starting removal of the high current conductor fastener on A+ (Left oven leg) it became clear right away that the oven of the target was broken as the leg moved as soon as the fasten was loosened.

Inspection of TM1 with the target removed yeilded no obvious signs of trouble, save a piece of capton tape found on the sliding tray directly below the service tray.

  53   Wednesday, November 16, 2011, 07:46 chad fisherSouth Hot-CellStandard OperationTM1TaC#1Inspection of TaC#1

Inspection of TaC#1 showed that the oven was indeed broken on the A+ (left oven leg) side of the central block.

UCx#3 has been installed on TM1.

Leak check also complete.

Base Leak Rate 0.0 x 10-9

Pressure 0.0x10-4

Two checks on upper heat shield joint - no response (2 sec spray/check)

Two checks on lower heat shield joint - no response(2 sec spray /check)

10 sec flood of all heat shield joints - no response

Electrical check coomplete.

  74   Monday, March 12, 2012, 10:03 chad fisherSouth Hot-CellStandard OperationTM1UC#3UC#3 Removal

UC#3 was removed from TM1 this morning. Upon removing the oven heater bolts BOTH legs fell demonstrating that both sides of the oven tube have broken off from the central block.

Target was put into a can under argon for disposal after the module is removed from the cell.

The source tray looked to be in very good, clean condition.

An autopsy was performed on UCx#3 yesterday afternoon. This autopsy followed the plan written by Anders. Indeed, both sides of the target oven had seperated from the central block.Pictures were taken by Anders and Pierre.

After the disection the target was placed back in a can under argon. Any small piece were placed in a zip lock bag and also put in the can under argon.

UCx#3 was packaged into a spent can, double bagged and the bag and cans filled with argon as much as possible. Lid was attached and can moved to the storage vault. The target was placed in in Pail 93, and placed into slot 1C of the vault, it was 11.7mSv/hr when removed from the south hot cell. See attached file for latest vault details

Nb#6 has been inserted into the south hot cell in preparation for ionstallation onto TM1. During the pre-insertion inspection I noticed that I could see the foil installed into the ionizer tube and that in did not seem to be seated or concentric to the tube itself. I had Anders and Friedhelm check this and they deemed that it was ok.

TM#1 moved from conditioning station to the south hot cell, the module had a field of 16mSv/hr.  The move was not without excitement as the crane decided on its own to move 2 inches west on two occasions during the move.On the second time that the errant moved happened I hit the E-stop on the crane kill the power, the first time it happen it stopped the errant movement on its own.

Chad and I did a leak check on TM1 Nb5 target heat shield circuit. The leak detector was connected to heat shield circuit. The pumping down  of the  circuit is very smooth.Base leak rate is 0.0xE-9atm.cc/sec,and the base pressure is 0.0xE-4 torr. Chad checked the helium flow downstairs .He sprayed helium to both up and down VCR joints 2seconds each time. There is no any response on leak detector(30 seconds waiting time). Both joints did the same test twice, no response . Finally, he flushed helium around the target for 10 seconds, and i didnt see any response on leak detector either. The heat shield circuit on TM1 Nb5 target is leak tight at this stage.

  101   Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 12:14 chad fisherSouth Hot-CellStandard OperationTM4SiC#26SiC#26 removal TM4 degredation

SiC#26 was removed from target module #4 this morning. Target shows the now standard arc marks on the 9 pin connector housing...pictures to follow.

Of greater concern is the amount of "plating out" or "arc" marks on both the insulators and connductor of the TM4 source tray. I will again warn that the source trays historically have a life expectancy, and that TM4 continues to show visual signs that the current source tray is rapidly approaching the end of its useful life!

I understand that one of this years goals is to retrofit TM3; however I fear TM4(and possibly TM1) may fail before this can be released. With the current absence of backup source trays and modules I fear we leave the ISAC program in a very vulnerable position.
