Conditioning by ISAC operations

Saturday, September 24, 2016, 11:15: RGA on for heater conditioning. (kept off during HV conditioning)

Sunday, September 25, 2016, 07:44: TGHT and TBHT voltage jumps during heater ramping. Likely contact between target and heat shield. Contacted ISAC operations and asked to abort ramping at current values. TGHT/TBHT 500 /270 A

Monday, September 26, 2016, 08:22: ISAC operations resuming ramping to 550 A. Corrected TGHT voltage at ISAC TS was ~6.2 V at 580 A. Expected voltage at TCS would then be 6.2 + (3.4+2.9)E-3*580 = 9.9 V. Limit set at 9.5 V.

Monday, September 26, 2016, 09:09: Increased TGHT voltage limit to 9.6 V to allow it to reach 550 A.

Monday, September 26, 2016, 10:17: Voltage limit increased to 10.2 V which allowed the current to go to 575 A

Tuesday, September 27, 2016, 08:08: Conditioning complete. Ran at 575 / 270 A and 47 kV for about 1 hour. Conditioned cold to 49 kV.

The HV enclosure and module connections were inspected by David and Anders on Wednesday 19th in an attempt to find any HV problems causing the high leakage current. One cable was cable tied to a copper conductor in the chase. Some small pieces of loose material were removed. No obvious problems could be detected.

Entry  Friday, October 21, 2016, 15:10, Anders Mjos, South Hot-Cell, Repair, TM2, Ta#49, Stuck TGHT clamp bolt removal

During target removal on Wednesday October 12th, the left target heater conductor bolt (ITD0058) could not be removed. The bolt was found to be stuck in the threads (keensert) of the TGHT conductor block (ITA0583). In the process of attempting to remove the bolt, the conductor insulator (ITD0054) cracked (ref assy ITD0052). To allow increased torque to be applied and support the conductor block, a clamping jig (ITD0612) was designed and fabricated. The jig was assembled and it's function tested on the ISAC Test Stand on Friday 14th. On Monday 17th the bolt could be removed using the clamping jig and a socket wrench with an extended handle.

The threads on the removed bolt was damaged. A new set of bolts were therefore prepared and a tap was run through the keensert to restore the threads. The threads in the conductor block was tested and found to be OK using a new bolt.

The spent target could now be removed. Unfortunately the right manipulator failed during installation of a new conductor insulator, which forced the repair of the insulator and installation of the new target (SiC#35) to be postponed until the manipulator can be repaired.

Chad and Anders inspected the test target in the hot cell today. The lid had been previously removed.

  • The EE looked to have performed well.
  • A piece of Ta foil was found inside the heat shield. It is not clear if this has been there during operation or if it entered the heat shield while in the hot cell. The foil has markings which indicate that it has seen heat.
  • Travis measured 40 MOhm at 500V between heat shield and anode after the target was removed.

Wednesday, June 28, 2017, 17:00: BIAS at 35 kV, EZL at 17.5 kV

The voltage response on TBHT and TGHT changed as the target was heated up. This was later determined to be due to target shorting to heat shield and the grounding of the power supplies being achieved at the HV pedestal in the target hall and not in the HV enclosure as is done online. When this was changed, the target operated normally again.

The target was inspected by Chad and Anders. Photos are available on DocuShare. It was noticed that the target tube heater terminals had lifted up from the insulator on the target assembly as seen in this Photo. This has later been detemined to be from the assembly, where additional clearance was required and achieved by installing washers.
