297 C discs were loaded onto a Ta tube wrapped in 3 Ta heatshields. (10 of which are analysis discs).  They should be the first to be pushed out as they were loaded last.

The discs were loaded upside down to facilitate transfer to final container post conditioning.

a Ta foil disc was placed at the front end and a Ta spring at the back end of the tube.

The weight of the whole system is 254.4 g

Evap 2 was left to reduce pressure overnight.

Target temperature is 2000 C for five hours @ approx 450A

Good vacuum = 3e-2 Torr

Bad vacumm= 5e-2 Torr

  • Cleaned TGHT terminals with scotch-brite and methanol.
  •  New (clean) heat shield prepared WO-39230-2.

Heat treatment of 2 bullet-shaped Nb samples in a LP-SIS container; it is just that we don't have a target boat. 

Container is wrapped with 12" in total length.  A strip of Nb foil is used as an underlayer for the samples to sit on top. 

Chamber has been pumped down and current vacuum at 1e-6 Torr. 

HS water check - good.

Target temperature 1400C

Ramping up to 250A; this should get to ~1300C.  Will let it heat for over night and step up to 1400C tomorrow.

With the help of Anthony Ip from vacuum group, the problem was diagnosed to be the roughing pump itself. The pump was replaced and pumping improved. The chamber can now be evacuated and turbo ready to start in less than 10 minutes.

The filter is not stocked by vacuum group and could not be replaced.

Last week parts of the roughing line was cleaned by Rick. The PVC roughing line has been replaced with a SST bellows. The SST bellows is KF25 and should be replaced by a KF40 bellows in the long run.

Five Nb samples wrapped with Nb foil were set on a tantalum boat (coated with TaC)

the tantalum boat was wrapped with two tantalum sheets.

The boat was installed in the EVAP2.

The initial vacuum was IGP1 = 1.26e-6 Torr.

Ramping rate 5 A/min to final current of 200 A.

Target left pumping down in Evap2 overnight. 

Initial weight including protective jig = 1474.3 g

Total number of target foils:388 

 10 analysis discs: 5x 220727-2 labelled as A and 5x 231123-2 labelled as B on the right side (front) of container.  Order of discs ABABABABAB.

Total length packed 15.5 cm

container has 3 Ta heat shields including the inner made of three pieces as to cover the center block.

No endcaps inserted to facilitate out-gassing

Ta coated spring at  both ends

ramp to 500A @ 1A/min TGHT and to 230A on TBHT

max approx 700A on TGHT and 230A on TBHT (Omega slope set = 0.990)

Then temperature = 1800C

TBHT will be set fixed at 230 A (max).  TBHT heated manually and automatically to max.

Good vac at 5.00 e -4 Torr

Bad vac at 5.00 e-2 Torr

 IGP1= 9.3e-07 Torr at start of initial ramp.

A are discs produced using new method and B are discs produced using milling.

Top temperature 1800C at 710 A but started dropping.  Increased current to 750A and left there for 4 hours.
