Fernando Maldonado | Test FEBIAD | HP-FEBIAD | | | 38295-8 | 42752-5 | Done | FEBIAD development part 1/3 | Reminder. Mini pump still linked to SV1. DO NOT OPEN SV2!!!
The plan for today Thursday, June 25, 2020 is:
- Optimize (tune) the beam to FC0 and then to FC6.
Compensate beam energy by substracting the value of anode voltage to the high voltage. Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:07: FEBIAD is on cathode bias
- Perform an efficiency measurement to know the correct work of the mini pump and also the time needed for 1 measurement.
- Perform at least 3 efficiency measurements of the same configuration as a sanity check on the reproducibility of the measurements.
The system is prone to trip if the build-up pressure for the gas lines is higher than 7e-6T. I will try to wait as long as reasonably possible to make sure the gas lines are pumped to good vacuum levels.
COVID-19 protocol: buddy is Marla Cervantes

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 10:34: TP6 tripped. Closed IV4 closed and reset it. TP6 on
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 10:41:IV4 open
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 10:54: Optimizing beam to FC0 with current tune.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 12:19: New values for TPS:Q1,Q2,Q3,Q4. Better beam shape on RMP0A and 0B
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 12:33: I think there is something wrong with this FEBIAD as the mass scan does not show any peaks.
I've noticed the word document from Aaron, and he observed peaks likely from surface ionized species. Furthermore there is no anode current readback on epics nor on the power supply.
Possbile culprits. The anode is not well attached to the 9-pin. The cathode temperature is extremely low and there are no electron-impact ionized species.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 12:52: Power supply is on cathode bias mode as well as all the service cap wiring.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 13:03: Back to old tunes. Mass scan still showing only surfaced ionized species.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 14:30: Mass scan for 0V finished. Peaks at 38 and 28 u. 38 is Potassium, but 28 is odd, closest surface ionized species might be Al27 with an ionization potential of about 5.8 eV.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:20 : Mass scan for 100V finished. Peaks still at 38 and 28 but with different intensities. Now there are features what seem to be 18 and 14. Water and N respectively.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:03: Manually tap TBHT to 290 A.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:31: FC6 signal increased. Anode leakage current still showing 0.0 mA.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:35: Manually tap TBHT to 295 A
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:58: Mass scan completed. More peaks showed up.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:35: Manually tap TBHT to 300A. Anode leakage current still showing 0.0 mA.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:30: Manually tap TBHT to 305A. Anode leakage current still showing 0.0 mA.
Increasing Anode to 500 V, now there is a reading of 1.2mA. However, there were sparks on the high voltage so this current might be a leakage current from the high voltage.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:34: Lowering to 300A to run a mass scan.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:59: Similar mass spectrum, the anode current is meaningless.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:00: Mass 28 will be used for efficiency measurements.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:15: SV3 closed.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:17: SV5 open/close/open. Maximum vacuum 6e-6T. This is very closed to the hard-coded interlock. Everything is off, so it will be better to have the vacuum response at least near 4 or 5 e-6T.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:26: SV3 closed.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:31: SV4 closed.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:41: SV5 closed. SV1 open. Wait 15 min

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 19:02: Auto-ramping TGHT / TBHT to 580 / 290 A @ 2 A per min.
The plan for today Friday, June 26, 2020 is:
- Ramp up high voltage to operation values
- Mass scan at nominal values
- Send m=28 beam to FC6
- Perform an efficiency measurement to know the correct work of the mini pump and also the time needed for 1 measurement.
- Perform at least 3 efficiency measurements of the same configuration as a sanity check on the reproducibility of the measurements.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:45: SV5 closed. FC6=5.18e-10 and decreasing.
SV5 closes the gas line segment to the ion source. The response on the ion current indicates that once the leakage lines are closed, there is still some gas in the lines causing the slow decrease on ion current.
There is approximately a factor of 2 increase for m=28 when the argon is used.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 13:00: SV5 opened. No trip!!!
Ion current increases when the valve is open. This indicated the build up pressure being release into the ion source. Max FC6=4.17e-9 A. Now decreasing.
Friday, June 26, 2020, 13:07: FC6 reading and IG1 reading approaching values previous to efficiency measurement.
Friday, June 26, 2020, 13:13: FC6=1.17e-9A. IG1=3.47e-6.
Total time for 1 efficiency measurement 50 minutes. The largest wait occurs for the current to stabilize.
Approximately 30 minutes when closing the valves, 15 minutes when opening them, and 10 minutes for roughing the lines.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 17:24: FC6 reading keeps decreasing and it's already below the initial current.
I suspect that the ion current that was read when the coil was changed corresponds to superposition of previously ionized species and the coil adjusted those charges. Once flushed, the neutral atoms will established a new equilibrium.
NOTE: Will setting the anode to 0 V flushed the source? Test it tomorrow.
Friday, June 26, 2020, 17:43: FC6 signal is increasing. I'll leave it as is.
Saturday, June 27, 2020, 11:47: FC6=1.06e-11A. IG1=3.40e-6T. Similar to the value of the current prior to the efficiency measurement.
The plan for today Saturday, June 27, 2020 is:
- Perform an efficiency for coil 20. This might be a long measurement if the value has to increases again. If after 1.5 h the signal still shows a mismatch, then I'll try to flush the source by setting the anode to 0V
- Redo efficiency measurement.
- Try another coil value.

Fernando Maldonado | | | | | | | Done | Gas delivery system upgrade | Yesterday, December 1st, I successfully installed and tested the gas system inside the faraday cage.
The changes performed were as follows:
- Remove He gas tank (to make room for new tank)
- Remove calibrated leak to connect new gas line
- Remove convectron gauge to install a high range dial manometer.
The tests were done manually and consisted as follows:
- Gas lines roughed by opening SV1.
- Tank regulator set to deliver 1 bar
- SV4 opened to allow the gas to enter the lines
- Dial manometer verified to match the pressure set by the regulator
- Alternatively roughed and pressurized the lines by opening/closing SV1/SV4
- Tank lines emptied with SV1 and SV4 open simultaneously.
The test involve the lines up to SV5. The gas line portion from SV5 to the top of the HV cage was not included as it was removed for TM3 HV tests (se entry #822)
When the HV tests are concluded I will install a new line that will include a gauge.

Yesterday, January 13th I added back the gas line from SV5 to the service cap.
I temporarily added a gauge in between to measure the gas pressure. After successful tests I removed it from this location.
Finally, I added the gauge on the service cap, which its desired location (see attached picture). The tests corroborate no pressure losses from the gas bottle up to this location. |

Wednesday, January 20, 2021, 11:26: John Chow verified that the power supply was in negative mode.
Just as side note, I think the PS was in negative mode since the quoted entry from October 30 2019. Given that the SiC/FEBIAD was supposed to run in cathode mode, the test stand was rewired to this. The only rewiring after this was for the P2N. |

Wednesday, February 03, 2021, 19:11: Able to reach 28 kV but a spark ocurred. TSG:CBC adn TSG:Q1 readback 2500 and 1500 V (similarly to the spark at 1 pm). Bias is current limited again, even at the new current limit.
- I think there might a short with one of the steerers cables, or a bit unlikely, to the quad.
- Slow charge up process, that does not discharges.

Thursday, February 04, 2021, 14:39 : Small bright spot at the TGHT or HS cooling lines from the solder of the GND water lines.
Without voltage this is not noticeable. Likely a corona discharge happening at this location and hence limiting the current.
Opening to create clearance. Also to troubleshot the cathode power supply.

Fernando Maldonado | | LP-SIS | | | 44139-10 | 44378-2 | Problems/Solutions | Energy spread calibration with SIS | The system was vented to make clearance on the waterlines as a very small continuous discharge was observed.
The inspection revealed some marks on the HS water line (sideview photo). From the the bottom and from real close (zoom and backview photo) the marks are quite noticeable with shinny copper in the middle and dark circles around.
The GND line is routed in such a way that sits on top of the ion gauge chamber (gnd-ig1) this could explain why the vacuum had small oscillation during the current limited events.
Moreover, the GND line has the steerer cables tied to it, this could explain why one of the steerers got affected after the sparks.
Also, the GND line is in contact with a dark grime that goes all the way into the first skimmer (gnd-quad). I think the grime observed inside the test stand might have become conductive, or if this is trace from a previous flashover, this is good path to flash again.
The EE and the plasma electrode were removed and they show signs of buildup. Cleaned and reinstalled |
