Tried pumping down chamber with roughing pump. Looks like there is water in the system. Will leave it as is for now.

Tuesday, April 28, 2020, 12:30

Removed SiC#40 target and pumped down with HS lines blanked off. Used recycled SST gaskets.

Tuesday, April 28, 2020, 13:00

Still problem with water in the system. CG1 at about 25 Torr. Purging all water lines and pumping down again.

  802   Wednesday, July 22, 2020, 08:56 Luca Egoriti P2N testHP-SISITETM4  In progressp2n heating test - electrical feedthrough configuration

The electrical feedthroughs at the top of the test stand module were reconfigured to deliver up to 1200A to the p2n target.

1) The two COIL lines (one + and one -) were disconnected from their terminals E and F

2) The TBHT terminals (two + and two -) were disconnected from A and B

3) The two TBHT positive terminals are connected to E and G respectively. The two TBHT negative terminals are both connected to F, and a 4/0 cable is run from F to H

4) The three TGHT + terminals are left connected to D. The three TGHT - terminals are left connected to C

In the vacuum chamber, COIL and TGHT terminals of the same polarity are shorted by means of thick copper bars specifically machined to match the test stand terminals geometry. The test can proceed by ramping both TGHT and TBHT up to 600 A each, possible at the same time and speed.

The wiring diagram is shown in the attached picture

Extech measurements before heating (µOhm):

TGHT Left leg Ta-Cu: 205, 215, 212, 201.

TGHT Right leg Ta-Cu: 287, 295, 275, 292.

TGHT Ta legs: 596, 606, 597, 598.

TBHT A: 1470, 1471.

TBHT B: 1469, 1469.

Wednesday, July 22, 2020, 16:21

Rampup finished around 2PM, looks good. Around 300+300A the TBHT voltage limit prevented the TBHT current to increase, and instead it decreased. Aaron ramped it down, adjusted the voltage limit and proceeded without issues.

The water flow and temperatures looked fine.

Attached the plots and a picture at 1200A

 Thursday, July 23, 2020, 11:53

Frank Song checked for us the status of the test stand. Pictures looked good, despite the reflections, I can't see sign of the flexy legs glowing. Thank you Frank!

The voltage on the TGHT has dropped 0.02 V, and the voltage on the TBHT (COIL lines) has dropped by 0.04V in 20 hours. I think it's negligible, just a sign of some sintering.

The cooling parameters are as follows:

Input 1: 28.05 C

Input 2: 8.49 lpm

Input 3: 27.79 C

Input 4: 11.14 lpm

Input 5: 27.72 C

Input 6: 3.90 lpm

Input 7: 27.78 C

Input 8: 7.79 lpm

Friday, July 24, 2020, 16:42

This morning I saw the target for my first time and not in a picture. I could see a mild glow in the center of both flexy legs, while the external foils seemed cold. This seems really good, as expected!

Water parameters were checked:

Input 1: 27.75 C

Input 2: 8.38 lpm

Input 3: 27.52 C

Input 4: 11.13 lpm

Input 5: 27.37 C

Input 6: 3.93 lpm

Input 7: 27.53 C

Input 8: 7.78 lpm

Monday, July 27, 2020, 09:35

Aaron's measurement from today at 7:30am

 Input 1: 26.61 C

Input 2:  8.25 lpm

Input 3: 26.35 C

Input 4: 11.19 lpm

Input 5: 26.21 C

Input 6: 3.84 lpm

Input 7: 26.35 C

Input 8: 7.76 lpm

Thursday, July 30, 2020, 23:02

Ramp down terminated around 7pm, the current was ramped smoothly but the voltage from both PS (TGHT and TBHT) had some bumps in correspondance with vacuum response. Maybe something was shorting? A thorough inspection of the heat shield and target might tell more.

Thanks Fernando for ramping down!

  821   Monday, November 23, 2020, 10:03 Aaron Schmidt      Problems/SolutionsRP2 Check / pump down issue

TMSRP2 has been struggling since the power bump occurred Nov 18, 2020

Monday, November 23, 2020, 09:48: Open TMS:PV2.

Monday, November 23, 2020, 09:51: Close TMS:PV2. CG2B @ 0.515T.

Monday, November 23, 2020, 09:52: TMS:RP2 off.

After disconnecting the backing line to RP2, a lot of water poured out of the line. May have back tracked from the vapour off of RP1 and the leaks on the chamber side. Both are on the same line.

Monday, November 23, 2020, 13:06: TMS:RP2 swapped w/ old Tri-Scroll pump. RP2 on.

Monday, November 23, 2020, 13:23: TMS:TP6 & TMS:TP2 on.

822   Tuesday, December 01, 2020, 11:56 Carla Babcock      In progressModifications to test stand for TM3 tests

Tuesday, December 01, 2020, 11:56 :

TSG:BIAS unplugged and controls pigtail (made by Ray) added in order to connect controls cable to TCS:BIAS, which is now installed in the same rack.

Basic controls testing done without turning on the power supply, controls max values scaled to 75kV, 5mA.

In process of grounding all features inside the faraday cage. New grounding will be marked with a label for easy identification later.

NOTE: we should get together in January to discuss test stand wiring, since I discovered another burned up connection (see next elog entry, #823).

Tuesday, December 01, 2020, 16:47 :

Grounding of all feedthroughs on the service cap complete and continuity checked.

Removed gas line with Fernando's approval, to make more space for our feedthrough.

Awaiting nylon insulator to proceed.

823   Tuesday, December 01, 2020, 17:04 Carla Babcock      Problems/SolutionsFound another burned jumper cable

Between feedthroughs F (magnet coil) and B (tube heater negative), I found a jumper with two resistors that has been burned up. I am not sure when this happened, but it would be good to review the overall setup of the service cap wiring in the new year.

The cable connected to feedthrough Q where the multipin sits also looks burned.

824   Wednesday, December 02, 2020, 08:32 Carla Babcock       Modifications to test stand for TM3 tests

Wednesday, December 02, 2020, 08:31 :

Added copper wire connection to multipin screw terminals in HV cage to make sure they are grounded.

Attached grounding rod to back of HV cage. Not ideal, but couldn't find a better place without making a extension to the cable. Will see what John Chow says. EDIT: John says it is ok for the tests, not for permanent.

Vented test stand to swap window positions. Swapped rightmost window on the door with two windows with window on the door with only one window. Replaced one oring, that on the single window. Cleaned the inside surfaces of both windows with methanol before re-installing. Roughing down just to make sure there are no major issues, at 0.313T and falling. EDIT: down to 0.015T overnight.

All breakers on HV cage panel are OFF.

825   Wednesday, December 02, 2020, 16:18 Fernando Maldonado      DoneGas delivery system upgrade

Yesterday, December 1st, I successfully installed and tested the gas system inside the faraday cage.

The changes performed were as follows:

  • Remove He gas tank (to make room for new tank)
  • Remove calibrated leak to connect new gas line
  • Remove convectron gauge to install a high range dial manometer.

The tests were done manually and consisted as follows:

  • Gas lines roughed by opening SV1.
  • Tank regulator set to deliver 1 bar
  • SV4 opened to allow the gas to enter the lines
  • Dial manometer verified to  match the pressure set by the regulator
  • Alternatively roughed and pressurized the lines by opening/closing SV1/SV4
  • Tank lines emptied with SV1 and SV4 open simultaneously.

The test involve the lines up to SV5. The gas line portion from SV5 to the top of the HV cage was not included as it was removed for TM3 HV tests (se entry #822)

When the HV tests are concluded I will install a new line that will include a gauge.

826   Thursday, December 03, 2020, 15:55 Carla Babcock, Alexander Shkuratoff       Modifications to ISAC test stand for TM3 tests

Thursday, December 03, 2020, 15:54 :

Got sign off from John Chow to run the system, though the nylon insulator was not ready when he came by. But we went over everything together.

Installed blue nylon insulator with all vacuum surfaces cleaned at least with methanol. No NPT fitting or tube installed, just testing service cap.

Thursday, December 03, 2020, 17:31 :

Tested voltage on the blue nylon insulator up to 75kV, left it at 75 for ~30mins. No sparking, no current drawn except occasionally when changing voltage and only ~1uA then.

Cleaned (but not very well...) the NPT fitting, copper tube, alligator clip and section of copper wire and installed these in the vacuum chamber. Will pump down overnight for testing tomorrow.

See attached photos for insulator setup and wire inside vacuum chamber.
