David Wang | Cooling | Maintenance | | | high active water refurbishment, reinstallation, and test operation. |
both high active pumps ITC:MP1 and MP2 are refurbished by RH group Maico and Peter. Pumps have been installed back to system with new inlet/outlet flange gaskets. high active water surging tank is refilled with water and pumps were primed. I asked operator to switch on pumps separately. Both pumps work fine. They are quiet and pumps discharging pressure is a little bit better comparing to before refurbishment. Nitrogen gas is injecting into system. O2 level is decreasing and R is going up.
2024-04-09: Joel.S checked pumps phase current draw: MP1 16.8 to 17.1A on each phase. MP2 17.0 to 17.2 A on each phase. They are normal. Pump body temperature are below 45C which is fine. |

David Wang | Cooling | Standard Operation | | | HALCW system general inspection. |
water are supplied to both ITE and ITW. I did a general inspection on HALCW system. Two small leaks on 2" shut off valves are fixed. No other leak has been found so far. all water flow meters work fine. MP2 pump discharging pressure is ok which is just above 100 psi on local gauge reading. pump noise are low. pump body temperature is less than 45C which is good. |

Carla Babcock | ITW | Standard Operation | | | ITW cage setup |
ITW gas lines pumped down to 2e-3Torr on leak detector with leak rate in the low e-7 atm-cc/s. Gas bottles opened at 3psi and labels in epics changed to reflect correct setup. switch box set to cathode mode, checked that anode wire was at HV common.
note ballast is removed from ITW now to be used in ITE so that line is blanked off. |

Eric Lahe | Spent Target Vault | Repair | | | ISAC Storage Vault Re-alignment |
ISAC Storage Vault Door Re-alignment (April-May 2024)
Issue
- Rollers gouging and marking on roller supports, testing shows door shifts at least 185 thou on structural beam when fully open vs. fully closed
- door misaligned: 1/4" laterally, slight rotation (~1/16" difference across closed door gap).
Repair
- Moved left structural beam (facing front of door) inward 1/4" at post.
- Loosened drive system to shift door over via crane to average laterally (1/8" shift) towards center,
- Attempted to fix door rotation with crane, door would not settle down perfectly flush, but got slight improvement
- Adjusted limit switches for fully open and closed (due to the adjustments made previously, needed to realign limit switches) - adjusted flag for final close back by ~1/4"; adjusted limit switch at back of vault forward ~1/4"
Verification
- Unloaded vault door actuation tested multiple times with no issues, door returned to same position every cycle, no interferences during travel
- Vault Door actuation tested with trays 4 and 6 engaged, no issues
- All pails accessible when open
- Tested open and closed limit switches: the open limit switches are working properly; the closing soft and hard limit switches are slightly close together, causing the door to just "bump" the vault when closing, The scale of this is OK for current operation, will be adjusted when the ISAC Target Hall Controls Overhaul is done
- Tested and reset Emergency override mechanism - works properly
Outstanding Tasks
- Will paint marks on structural supports to track if problem reoccurs - update ELog when complete
System State: Operational

Carla Babcock | South Hot-Cell | Development | | empty LP FEBIAD | investigation of cathode short on empty LP FEBIAD |
On May 30 Aaron, Chad and I removed the empty LP FEBIAD target from the SHC into the anteroom to attempt to find out the source of the cathode short observed online. The behaviour online was that a connection of several hundred ohms was preventing the cathode from being biased. The resistance was still enough to allow us to run in anode mode, which is what we did. I am not sure where the cathode short came from but there was significant sparking on this module when ops conditioned it (destroyed the gmov of the COIL power supply and the electronics for anode/cathode switching) and we have seen this cause cathode shorts before. The shorted behaviour did not go away when the target was cooled down, so I assume it was permanent damage to one of the insulators. This would be either the support insulator, the trident insulator, the gas line insulator or one of the tube retainer insulators.
Since the target didn't see protons, we decided to take it out of the hot cell and disassemble it to find which insulator was broken. Unfortunately, it appeared totally fine outside of the hot cell, no shorts could be found. We disassembled it anyway to look for issues but all we saw was a heat mark on the copper plates covering the coil, underneat the target (see attachment). We even shook the target quite a bit, and didn't produce a short.
Maybe there was a trace created on one insulator by the sparking, which oxidized when exposed to air and became insulating again? We didn't see anything obvious on the insulators, but I'm not sure if we would expect to.
No conclusions from this work. |

David Wang | ITE | Repair | | | IG1S elbow oring seal and a blabk off cap oring seal beside the elbow were replaced on ITE entrance module top.. |
IG1S elbow o ring seal and a blank off cap o-ring seal beside the elbow were replaced on ITE entrance module top last Friday. IG1s has a higher than normal reading so i leak checked entrance module top last Thursday and found leaks to 5x E-8 atm.cc/sec leak on one of (or both of )these two o-rings seals. they are too close to identify exactly on which one was leaking so both o rings were replaced. other air to vacuum seal on entrance module are leak free. |

Adam Newsome | Spent Target Vault | Maintenance | | | Annual Inspection of Main and Mini Storage Vaults |
The annual inspection of the main storage vault will be skipped this year since extensive inspection and testing was performed during the re-alignment job in May (see this e-log for details: e-log 2584). This included successful testing of the emergency close mechanism.
The mini storage vault was informally inspected by Adam Newsome on 2024-06-18. The following was checked:
- Cabling and cable management
- Connectors (note: the strain relief for the remote control input cable was loose - it was tightened)
- Controls box - external connectors and wiring
- Limit switches - wiring, mounting
- Motor visual check
- Drive wheels visual check
- Drive track visual check (note: the track had small pieces of metal shavings on it which were wiped off)
- Bearings visual check
- Miscellaneous fasteners visual check
Photos can be found in G:\remote handling\Facilities and Projects\ISAC\Mini Storage Vault\Inspections
The inspection was generally successful. No areas of concern. Regular inspection will resume next year. |

Adam Newsome | Crane | Maintenance | | | Pail Handling Tool - Annual Inspection |
The pail handling tool which is used to move 5 gallon pails around the target hall was inspected by A. Newsome. The main tool was checked, but not the spare as it is currently in a disassembled and unusable state. The tool appears to be in good, working condition. The following items were checked.
- Inspect structural integrity of long tube - check for bending, warpage, dents, cracks, rust/corrosion
- Inspect structural integrity of hook assembly - check for bending, warpage, dents, cracks, rust/corrosion
- Inspect fasteners - check all fasteners installed as per drawings, fasteners are tight (note: one fastener on crane interface subassembly was loose - all fasteners in these subassembly were tightened as a precautionary measure)
- Inspect crane interface assembly - check for damage and wear where the tool connects to the crane
- Check alignment - verify the tool connects to the crane and hangs vertically with no major misalignment (this step was not done - alignment is regularly checked during operations, and there was no concern as the tube was straight)
Note: these tools are being inspected monthly by D. Wang and F. Song.
Photos can be found in G:\remote handling\Facilities and Projects\ISAC\Pail Handling Tool\Inspections\June 2024
IMPORTANT: the maximum load capacity and lifter tag for the tool are not present. There is a plan in place to affix these two labels in the very near future. |
