Tantalum samples were loaded in a tantalum testing tube and installed in the EVAP2 to heat under vacuum for 3 days at 2000 degC (~500A, 4kW).
The temperature is measured with the Omega pyrometer (slope 0.98)
Some of the samples are in contact with graphite and enclosed with Ta caps, the other samples are not in contact with carbon.
The testing tube is wrapped with 3 Ta heat shields and is not TaC coated.
Thursday, April 15, 2021, 18:31
IGP1 = 4.5e-7 Torr
Good vacuum = 3e-2 Torr
Bad vacuum = 5e-2Torr
The TGHT will be ramped to 500A at 5A/min
Thursday, April 15, 2021, 20:00
Finished ramping
TGHT = 502 A, 8.22 V, Omega 2012 degC
Sunday, April 18, 2021, 20:38
After 3 days at ~2000 degC, TGHT was ramped at -2A/min to 0A |

The CTL test target was installed again for a second thermal test. CTL block fastened to HS with 1 in lbs. A small piece of Ta-foil of 0.001" thickness was used between the CTL Cu-block and the Ta transfer line to reduce the heat transfer..
Thermocouples were re-attached to CTL and Heat Shield (see above for channels #s).

The target has been pumping down to 5.3 e-7 Torr. On the RGA mass scan, mainly H2O (mass 18 + constituents) was detected at ~2.7pA (see attachment #1).
The target will be heated up: TGHT = 850A (rate @ 1A/min); TBHT = 300A (rate @ 1A/min).
Thursday, March 07, 2013, 11:51
TGHT and TBHT reached to 850A (local, 845A\13.80V) and 300A, respectively. The out gassing of CO (mass 28) reached to ~5pA at the max currents. (see attachment #2)
TBHT will be ramped down to 0A to compare the temperatures.
Thursday, March 07, 2013, 15:55
TBHT at 0A. See attachment#3 for the temperatures and RGA data before further ramping down the TGHT.

It was found that after the last process, Evap#2 has broken insulators - the cylinder insulator that supports the target centre legs and the block insulator that supports the terminals.
Informed Anders/Rick.

- Insulators replaced. Torque 55 in lbs on all fasteners.
- Cleaned TGHT terminals with scotch-brite and methanol.
- New (clean) heat shield prepared WO-39230-2.
- Re-installed right side heat shield alignment pin (previously removed to allow line of sight to the target).

John Wong | Nb | | LP-SIS | Done | Bob/Tobi Nb samples | Thursday, February 25, 2016, 18:04 Wednesday, February 24, 2016, 17:29
Heat treatment of 2 bullet-shaped Nb samples in a LP-SIS container; it is just that we don't have a target boat.
Container is wrapped with 12" in total length. A strip of Nb foil is used as an underlayer for the samples to sit on top.
Chamber has been pumped down and current vacuum at 1e-6 Torr.
HS water check - good.
Target temperature 1400C
Ramping up to 250A; this should get to ~1300C. Will let it heat for over night and step up to 1400C tomorrow.

I'm stopping the heating process because the camera is not working. I can't monitor the temperature. Tried to fit the camera; don't now why it fails to connect to the server.
Will look in to it tomorrow...

Initiated auto ramping TGHT at 2A/min.
Thursday, February 25, 2016, 17:33
Finally the camera is fixed.
Current temperature is at 1126C, TGHT at 250A. Will step up to reach 1400C.
Thursday, February 25, 2016, 18:04
TGHT stepped up to 335A to reach 1400C. (see attachment)
Will heat this for few hours and cool it at around 11pm tonight.
Thursday, February 25, 2016, 22:19
Samples have been heated over 4.5 hours.
Initiated cool down at 1A/min.

done! all good.

Anders Mjos | | | | Maintenance | Backing pump replaced |

The source of the poor vacuum in the backing line seems to be related to a dirty filter. We will try to find a replacement filter next week.
The problem seem to have started September 17th, when backing preassure CG1A went from 40 mTorr to 130 mTorr. CG1B remained around 30 mTorr.

With the help of Anthony Ip from vacuum group, the problem was diagnosed to be the roughing pump itself. The pump was replaced and pumping improved. The chamber can now be evacuated and turbo ready to start in less than 10 minutes.
The filter is not stocked by vacuum group and could not be replaced.
Last week parts of the roughing line was cleaned by Rick. The PVC roughing line has been replaced with a SST bellows. The SST bellows is KF25 and should be replaced by a KF40 bellows in the long run. |

Backing pump was making very loud high pitched noises during last couple processes in the evaporator.
Replaced with a new one this morning.
