The target UCx28 that was previously conditioned e-log 241, was set again in the EVAP1 for re-conditioning,

the reason was to get rid of all the material that could evaporate from the target and has the potential of clogging the ionizer.

The heating conditions are the same as the previous conditioning:

TGHT= 1 A/min to 438 A (same current used to reach 1900C in evap2 when sintering TaC coating - elog-455 evap2)

TBHT= 1 A/min 230 A

Cartridge-220928UCx was installed in the EVAP1 and pumped down yesterday.

Material will be reduced in LP-SIS wrapped with 3 Ta foils.

IGP1 = 2.1e-6 Torr

a cap was installed to collect material coming out from the ionizer tube

The initial weight of the cap 1 + small bag was recorded to be: 2.82 g   Final weight of cap1 + small bag = 2.84g (see attached picture)

Good vacuum = 5e-4 Torr

Bad vacuum = 5e-2 Torr

Power desired 1900W as approximate power used online.

Will autoramp @2A/min to 30A, then slow down ramp to 1A/min to 120A.

After first pressure bump cleared, will ramp up to 400 A @ 2A/20s to 425A on TGHT.  TBHT will be topped off at 230A.

from 425A, TGHT will be ramped at 1A/min and monitored for pressure behaeviour.

sytem will be left at reduction current for 4 hours.  Then, the current will be dropped to 1900W and allow to run for 8 hours.

The cup will be collected and the system will be run again in increments of two hours.

*slight change from test plan to save time*

Friday, October 07, 2022, 21:55

A true pressure max was not observed.  A max while current still rising.  stopped at 560A on TGHT and 5.3V

will leave at the above conditions for 4 hours.

Suspect that the thinner Ta shields make a difference.  Suggest to add a fourth shield and process the previous cartridge in a tube rather than a boat.  Treat for four hours (pressure max) and then test increasing the current to see if there is a pressure bump.  If no pressure bump then lower current to deposit 1900W for 8 additional hours.

After 4 hours at max current, the current was dropped to 450A (TGHT) and left for 8 hours.

The target container was previously coated with TaC and sintered in Evap 2.

The target is loaded with ??? discs of UCx (material from batch #???)

Total length = ???

The container is wrapped with 3 layers of Ta-heat shield, including the back block.

A regular TaC coated / sintered endcap is inserted on left, wrt the ionizer tube pointing out of the page. The right end is open with no cap.

The chamber is pumping down.

Instructions for conditioning the UCx target:

1. TGHT will need to heat up to ~ 175A to burn off the organics.

Parameter setup: 5.0e-5 good vac, 6.0e-5 bad vac. The auto-ramping rate is set to 0.1A/min.

2. Once the organics have burnt off, ramp down the TGHT to 0A at 2A/min.

3. Purge the glovebox with argon gas.

4. Vent the chamber with Ar gas. Close the valve when it is completely vented.

5. Remove the target. Be careful the left end (view from the top) is open with the D-cap.

6. Clean the chamber with TCE and remove all the gunge.

7. Install the target back

8. Pump down the chamber to at least low 10e-6 Torr before begin the final carbonization process.

9. Auto-ramp the TGHT current to 175A at 1A/min.

10. Once the TGHT reach to 175A. Auto-ramp TGHT to 520A at 0.1A/min.

11. At 520A, keep heating the target for at least 4-5 hours.

12. Auto ramp TGHT to 0A at 2A/min.

13. Purge the glovebox with argon for at least 5 min.

14. Vent the chamber with argon gas. Close the valve when it is completely vented.

15. Remove the target from the chamber and put in the "orange james bond box" and transport to the Ar-glove box.

Target container was previously coated with TaC spray and sintered.

It's is wrapped with 3 layers of Ta-heat shield, including the center block.

The target consists of 221 discs of UCx with 7.3cm in length.

A regular TaC coated endcap is inserted left, wrt the ionizer tube pointing down, so the right is open - discs are held on with Ta wire spring.

The chamber is currently pumping down.

TGHT will be ramped up to 520A at 0.1A/min

Parameter setup: 5.0e-5 good vac, 6.0e-5 bad vac.

The carbonization process is complete; chamber vacuum is stabilizing at 9.5e-6 Torr.

Currently TGHT is at 430A.  Increased TGHT ramping rate to 1A/min.  Target should be at max current (520A) in 1.5 hours, so TGHT can be ramped down around 4:30pm today.

 Wednesday, July 08, 2015, 16:36

TGHT at 520A/5.884V for over 4 hours.  Pressure coming down, currently at 1.42e-5 Torr.

Initiated cooling at -2A/min.

Chamber can be vented in Ar tomorrow and the target will be inspected.

Thursday, July 09, 2015, 17:08

The target was taken out from the evaporator and inspected.

Some "burnt" marks on the ionization legs can be observed and also the centre support leg is bent.  (see photos#1)

Not sure if the centre leg came in bent after machining or it happened during the carbonization process??  Do not have photos of the container before the process to compare.

A few things to note…  During the process, the power supply did tripped off twice due to the cooling water valve shut off. (see photo#2).  An assumption is that sudden cool down of the hot target might have caused the quenching effect.

No other visible damage.

End caps are inserted and ready for assembly.
