I have rewired the test stand (service cap wiring only, not power supply wiring) to anode bias mode as shown in the diagram. This was not how it was wired before, there are several things I have removed that appear to be newer additions. I also removed the burned cable between TBHT(-) and COIL(-), and between the multipin feedthrough and ground (probably related to the other burned cable).

I tried to measure the resistances across the feedthroughs (as opposed to across the resistors themselves) but they all seem wrong. I get 27Ohms across the TGHT and TBHT circuits instead of 100Ohms. Between the TGHT and TBHT I get 100Ohms as expected. Across the coil circuit I get 6Ohms instead of 100Ohms. Probably only the 6Ohms really needs to be fixed, but if the resistors are damaged, then the varistors might be as well.

Yesterday, December 1st, I successfully installed and tested the gas system inside the faraday cage.

The changes performed were as follows:

  • Remove He gas tank (to make room for new tank)
  • Remove calibrated leak to connect new gas line
  • Remove convectron gauge to install a high range dial manometer.

 

The tests were done manually and consisted as follows:

  • Gas lines roughed by opening SV1.
  • Tank regulator set to deliver 1 bar
  • SV4 opened to allow the gas to enter the lines
  • Dial manometer verified to  match the pressure set by the regulator
  • Alternatively roughed and pressurized the lines by opening/closing SV1/SV4
  • Tank lines emptied with SV1 and SV4 open simultaneously.

 

The test involve the lines up to SV5. The gas line portion from SV5 to the top of the HV cage was not included as it was removed for TM3 HV tests (se entry #822)

When the HV tests are concluded I will install a new line that will include a gauge.

 

 Yesterday, January 13th I added back the gas line from SV5 to the service cap.

I temporarily added a gauge in between to measure the gas pressure. After successful tests I removed it from this location.

Finally, I added the gauge on the service cap, which its desired location (see attached picture). The tests corroborate no pressure losses from the gas bottle up to this location.

The system was vented to  make clearance on the waterlines as a very small continuous discharge was observed.

The inspection revealed some marks on the HS water line (sideview photo). From the the bottom and from real close (zoom and backview photo) the marks are quite noticeable with shinny copper in the middle and dark circles around.

The GND line is routed in such a way that sits on top of the ion gauge chamber (gnd-ig1) this could explain why the vacuum had small oscillation during the current limited events.

Moreover, the GND line has the steerer cables tied to it, this could explain why one of the steerers got affected after the sparks.

Also, the GND line is in contact with a dark grime that goes all the way into the first skimmer (gnd-quad). I think the grime observed inside the test stand might have become conductive, or if this is trace from a previous flashover, this  is good path to flash again.

 

The EE and the plasma electrode were removed and they show signs of buildup. Cleaned and reinstalled

Well well well, after several scans I observed the following:

  • Bias readback changes by 14  V. This doesn't necessarily means this is the absolute value, it could be better or worse.
  • Magnet oscillates around 1 gauss, enough to move the beam to the sides.
  • Different settings on the rpm scans does not yield to different results in the data
  • Intensity variations causes one of the rpms scans to be lower or higher.
  • Total source scans are always mirrored as long as nothing else varies.
  • Separated ion scans varied wildly. No two consecutive scans are the same. Likely a combination of Bias voltage and magnet current ripples.
  • Following Baartman's proceedure on a cherry-picked data set, I estimated an energy spread of 11.75 eV. To be discussed with him

With a crooked beam, the EZL will send the beam off-center and the quad will not compensate that. The double peak observed in the beam size scan indicates that the focusing is not correct.

New parameters on the emittance rig for this tune. Offset from 40 to -50. This shifts the phase space in the y axis such that is visible on the plot. 

Even in a different mass, the position scans on the dispersion plan are not reproducible.

After inspecting the ion source, and revising the electrical connections, I suspect that the TBHT was floating all the time and only when it was in contact with the plasma electrode it held HV.

When the plasma electrode was removed, there was no reference whatsoever, and the ions were not extracted.

It seems then that the resistor R4 (ISK4562D) is necessary to provide a reference to the TBHT  in a similar way R1 provides one to extraction electrode.

Tuesday, February 09, 2021, 20:52: Installing R4. If the anode works this time, it will be worth checking why this reference is necessary. From the electric diagram, the chassis ground should be HV ground.

Running the TS up to 580A until then is not recommended.  Control room to update tomorrow morning.

  There are no plans for Cu-LCW system to be switched off today.  I believe they are still working on correcting the issue that caused the trip two days ago.  Once it is corrected and we are ready to switch to the secondary pump, the switch over "should" be relatively invisible with possibly a slight drop in line pressure.

Friday, February 12, 2021, 10:07: In order to trouble shoot the ISAC TS, I  let the sparks to continue. Initially, they occurred in the extraction electrode spark gap and were both visible and audible. However, they stop and the instabilitiy was present.

I rise the voltage again and let the spark happen for a longer period of time.

I saw how the collimator wire on the far back of the source tray was moving as if a hurricane was inside, which is very strange. I followed up the wire and I saw how it was sparking to something (see attached photo)

I say something because from the angle is difficult to say if it was going to the chamber itself or to the HS waterlines. Both scenarios are concerning

First of all the collimator is never biased and it if any case the jacket  (MHV cable) is on ground ground

In case the discharge happened from wire to the chamber, then the collimator wire was charging up, it is extremely important o note that the jacketed cable goes outside the box very close to one of the turbos.

In the other scenario where the discharge was happening from the wire to the HS waterlines, that is, HV to ground, the simply creating a clearance should be enough. In this case as well is relevant to know that this jackted cable leaves the farday cage.

I will create clearance from collimator wire to HS waterlines.

There was a previous DI CU-LCW  pump trip as per the above elog. The CU-LCW pump was configured this morning. The water pressure is set to 80 PSI as per the MCR. Any further can overload & trip the pump.
