|
We have a ram installed on SHC pole which is 0.5 meter to module shielding block surface. the readings we got today during TM3 move:
at containment box center (highest reading): 3.14 msv/hr.
at bottom of shielding blocks: 960 usv/hr.
at 1/4 of shielding blocks height from bottom :700usv/hr.
at 1/2 of shielding blocks height from bottom: 340usv/hr.
at 3/4 of shielding blocks height from bottom:140u/sv/hr.
The Ram is behind the pole and measured the surface which is 90 degree right side of that opened service tray side. |

There is a smallleak HS which we did not see before. The HS is checked in SHC with helium spray yesterday. We did not see the leak . We checked this HS line every time when new target was installed. So mostly, this small leak is from VCRs connected to new target. But, we can not confirm it. Still this line will be checked on next new target. We should have a better understanding when checking next time. Other line are almost same as we checked in last year November. I did not see essential change. |
Thursday, April 13, 2017, 14:16, David Wang, Crane, Repair, , , TH crane: east side main hoist brake assembly is replaced.
|
Gordon Crane technician Tom Kauss finished the replacement of the east side main hoist brake assembly. A new set up is installed. he adjusted gap too close during first time try. So, the smell appeared when operate the brake. He increased the gap to a proper distance then. It looks like everything works fine now. Still, The brake need to be tested with 10K lBS load on it. We will do the load test on next Thursday when he come here to replace west side brake assembly. Before that, No module move or other heavy lifting action should be fulfilled on TH crane.
2017-04-20. Tom Kauss finished the replacement of west side main hoist brake assembly. The old set up will be rebuilt, and stored as spare for the future. The load test is done. 10k lbs load was used for testing. Brakes work fine. No strange noise and smell has been found during the test. |

Friday, April 21, 2017, 08:19, David Wang, Conditioning Station, Repair, , , Low frequency on TCS TGHT flow sensor.
|
Anders and I found a low frequency issue(13hz only) on TCS TGHT flow sensor when doing TM4 conditioning. By trouble shooting, We found the module water lines are good. the restriction cause this problem in on TCS supply or return water lines to TGHT. I switched TGHT lines with MSP water lines. The wheel frequency on TGHT is 67.0hz which is pretty high. Now, MSP is using the original TGHT water line(flow sensor frequency 13hz). Flow sensors and thermocouples are switched as well so no control system change is needed on epic page. Everything are re-labeled in TH. With less brazing joints closing to heater source, the MSP line should be ok. By further troubleshooting this issue, I think the problem on this low flow sensor frequency problem is on those 1/2" Parker gray water lines inside that big 6" white pipe. See attachments. The lines are are twisted, and could be squeezed in my view. Since everything is enclosed in that big pipe, It is hard to tell where the lines are squeezed and cause this restriction. Comparing to an open guide chase, this round pipe makes everything difficult. Hard to trouble shooting , hard to remove lines or add new lines. It only looks beautiful. I tried all I can do, But, I have no quick solution to solve this problem permanently. Maybe, Rob walker and his technicians has better skill or more strength on removing old lines, or adding new lines to solve the problem. |

Monday, April 24, 2017, 16:06, David Wang, South Hot-Cell, Repair, TM2, , Crane main hoist strane noise when lifting up TM2
|
When lifting up TM2 (20000lbs) this afternoon, TH crane has a strange noise on main hoist. The module was lift up less than 1 feet.when strange sound was noticed. The module move was stopped right away, and module was lowed back to SHC. The strange noise was confirmed later with SEG block six inches lifting up. Gordon crane technician will be here to tomorrow morning to investigate the problem. |
Monday, April 24, 2017, 16:11, David Wang, Conditioning Station, Standard Operation, TM2, , TCS TP1s is restarted.
|
TCS IG1S is switched on as well. The reason to start the pump is to prepare a possible extended TM2 conditioning at TCS caused by TH crane issue. TCS:TP1 and TP2 are not switched on for this. |
Wednesday, April 26, 2017, 10:24, David Wang, ITW, Standard Operation, TM2, , TM2 ITW
|
TM2 was moved and connected in ITW yesterday afternoon. After roughing down, ITW turbo pumps are started. ITW TP4 can not be started to full speed. ISAC ops kept it at low speed mode with less than 1.0A current draw on pump. ITW IG1s shows red as well. I will take a look on them today when beam is off.

Monday, May 01, 2017, 12:32, David Wang, Crane, Repair, , , TH crane burning smell
|
TH crane burning smell showed again this morning. It appeared after 1-1.5 hours of continuously using during the F308 flasks moving in TH.After a certain time of using I think the brake gap is reduced because of thermal expansion. The main hoist and brakes work fine still. We knew these brakes gap are tight especially on west side. So, It is not surprised that this burning smell appeared again. It does not affect the safe of crane use in my view. But, The life of this brake assembly could be affected. I would like everyone know this issue. We may need to consult Gordon crane as well. Maybe, The gap should be increased up a little bit. On this Friday, I will use crane to transfer 30K lbs shielding blocks. It will be a good test on crane main hoist again. |

RU( coil 1), F (anode), and 60kv bias(HS, Gasline, and MSP) are shorted together. Other lines are good. They are measured between individual line each other @500V. The megga showed OL. All of them to ground are OL @500V as well. EL is grounded during check. |
Thursday, May 04, 2017, 14:06, David Wang, Conditioning Station, Repair, TM3, , A vacuum to air leak on TM3 service cap round side panel was found and fixed..
|
During TM3 roughing down yesterday afternoon,The vacuum gauges CG1 and CG1S stopped at 1.20 torr and refused to drop down. Leak detector was used to found where the problem was. LD was in rough detecting mode and showed 2.7xE-6 atm.cc/sec as base leak rate. Spray medium amount of helium to TM3 service top, and found this leak was on round panel of TM3 side wall. LR climbed to E-4 atm.cc/sec range on helium spraying. In my vie,One 10# socket head screw was not tightened properly after cameras job and caused this. The TCS was vented. The panel was took off and reinstalled. O-ring on the panel was replaced by a new one as well. Then TCS was pumped down again. The leak disappeared . All turbo pumps on TCS and TM3 were started successfully later. |
Friday, May 05, 2017, 11:06, David Wang, Crane, Standard Operation, TM3, , TH crane is used for 5 shielding blocks transferring.
|
TH crane is used for transferring five shielding blocks(30000lbs) today. All brakes work fine. Mostly, I do not need crane slow up motion for this job so during 1 hour moving, no rattle sound and burning smell has been found. I think TH crane is good to use as we decided. |
Friday, May 05, 2017, 11:53, David Wang, Conditioning Station, Repair, TM3, , sparking on TM3 serice cap top.
|
Sparking was found this morning inside HV cover on TCS in TH while TM3 was HV conditioning at TCS. The TCS bias was set to 50KV when I found this spark. It sparks between HV cover front side wall to a KF 25 clamp on HS water terminal. The KF 25clamp is used in this situation on HS water line top because the HS line is opened inside module, and we need a vacuum seal on the top of this line. Actually, The clap is much smaller than the corona ring on HS terminal, and the corona ring is more close to side wall. But there is a 90 degree straight corner on this clam. So the spark happened between the side wall and this 90degree corner on the clamp. We can not change the clap now since it will break vacuum. So, we decide to do HV test without HV cover installed onTM3 at TCS. A work permit is issued for this. Lock out procedure: Document-70039 is clarified in WP. |

Tuesday, May 09, 2017, 07:00, David Wang, Conditioning Station, Repair, TM3, , Follow up Aurelia's entry, TM3 and TCS current limits investigation.
|
Aurelia and I investigated this current limit issue May 8th. First, By separating TM3 from TCS. we found the problem is on TCS side. We did a Megga test on TM3 as well. TM3 is good at 1KV megga test. After that, The insulators between TCS to ground is test. they are good which could hold 1G ohm at 1000V megga test. So the problem should be on power supply side including power supply itself ,cables and transformer. Later, Tom and John found the TCS bias HV cable from power supply to HV chase top in faraday cage is broken down. It can not hold 5KV on HV test now. This cable should hold 100KV. But not this time. Tom also found the adapter on Faraday cage could be designed in a better way. The broken cable was removed yesterday. John and Tom will order an exactly same cable from Glassmen. |
Tuesday, May 09, 2017, 12:45, David Wang, Conditioning Station, Repair, TM3, , TM3 service tray side panel is cleaned and installed back to TM3

TM3 service tray side panel is cleaned and installed back to TM3 this morning. I visually inspected service tray insulators. Nothing is changed comparing to inspection before.Nine screws are installed on panel to hold it onto TM3. |
Friday, May 12, 2017, 07:42, David Wang, Crane, Repair, , , TH crane burning smell, smoke, and big noise on east side main hoist brake assembly.
|
This morning, when I prepare for today's crane check, The crane made a very strong noise without any load during the full speed up motion. I stopped the crane right away, and noticed that east side of main hoist motor area was smoking . The crane was moved to east end. And, I climbed up to the top, and found the smoke is coming form brake side, and should be produced by braking. The smell is same as before.Unless other thing is wrong, I think Gordon crane technician has to adjust the gap to a proper distance on both side of the main hoist. I feel very uncomfortable by operating the crane this way. They have to figure out what is wrong on these new brake assembly installation.
2017-05-12. This morning , Crane technicians increased both side of main hoist brake gaps today. They found on east side brake assembly, The gap is automatically closed after some jogging motions. Peter think this is caused by torque produced by automatic adjustment springs on brake. This torque rotate the gap adjustment device and closed the gap. We operate the crane for a while with 20000lbs load on it after gap adjustment. The rattling sound is still there at slow up motion. But, The main hoist braking sound is softer and gentle comparing to past month. This sound is more close to the sound before we replaced the brake assembly. So, This adjustment could be right in my view. They checked gaps after 0.5 hours operation. Everything is still fixed there . No change. They suggest we keep operating the main hoist, and they will be back on next Monday check again. I operated the main hoist up and down in different speed motion for 1 hour after they left. Everything works fine. Braking are gentle. No strange sound and smoke during up or down. I will do more operation on Monday morning before they come. Lets see the result after their checking.
2017-05-15 This morning, 20minutes of crane main hoist up and down test with lots jogging and braking. The braking sound is softer and gentle. Everything works fine.
2017-05-15. Gordon crane technician Peter came in during lunch time. Both side main hoist brake gaps have been checked. They are still at the same position as last Friday. The gap is not changed after operation. Peter will be back on next Monday and check everything again. |
