On 26/Sept/2022

Chad disassembled the right operator side manipulator, and noticed that gears in the handle were quite tight especially when compared to the left operator side manipulator.

Once a dry grease was added, and the handle reassembled all seemed to be in working order.

There was noticeable wear on a shaft and Chad has suggested to order some spare parts for the wrist and handle.

Myself and Maico were able to top up the NHC window oil.

The oil was filled through the expansion tank

- the Nitrogen line closed and the Nitrogen pressure valve was disconnected to ensure that no oil would go in to them.

- the pressure relief valve was disconnected to act as an air bleed line while we filled the oil

- with a funnel we slowly added the oil until the oil level could be read, showing about half full

- about 1.5 liters of oil were added

- once filled the Nitrogen line was reattached and the pressure was returned to recommended level

- the remaining oil was returned the RH shop

Now the oil level will be monitored, which will help identify if there is any leak in the system.

Today while I was removing the SiC#43 it was noticed that the multipin guide pin was loose.

This made it difficult to remove the target, and the multipin shoulder bolts removal was required.

With the loose pin it was not possible to attach the multipin for the target C#4.

Chad was able to tighten the multipin guide pin enough, however it became obvious that the pin could not be removed when it was attempted.

With the pin tightened, the target C#4 was installed and all checks were good.

It was recommend that once the C#4 target is removed the TM4 will need some repair to remove the multipin guide pin.

Chad - Also it was noted that the guide pin (ITA6453) in question showed signs of plating or heat (see pictures I've added)

Conducted PIE on SiC#44, which failed online. It had a cathode short, a target short and an anode short by the time we called the experiment off. In the post irradiation examination, two clear marks where the target legs touched the heat shield were found (see attachments 1 and 2). No marks were found to indicate where the cathode short would have been. The fibreglass sheath covering the anode wire where it passes over top of the coil was destroyed, must have been a result of sparking (see attachment 3). No other issues noticed, grid looked fine, though close inspection is difficult.

TM2 with spent target UCx#39 had an electric check in NHC.

After UCx 39# target was removed out., I did electrical check on TM2.   @500 V B to C is 5M ohm. all Others between are above 25Mohm. HV to Chasis is 650Mohm.  A to P is still short.

  2386   Thursday, November 03, 2022, 16:41 Carla BabcockNorth Hot-CellStandard Operation UCx#39Post irradiation inspection UCx#39

Did the PIE on UCx#39-IGLIS on Thursday Nov. 2 2022, couple pictures uploaded to docushare. Did not remove the target, just the heat shield cover.

Final electrical check on the module showed a dead short from TGHT/TBHT to HV common, which we did not see online. Seems like it must have occurred after ramp down? It persisted on the target after we removed it from the module. We couldn't find any obvious contact points, because it seems it did not happen while current was running in the target. Possible locations are the bottom support leg for the TBHT and the top of the right side target leg, though it was difficult to confirm with the camera.

Otherwise the only thing to note was a blacker-than-usual spot on the inside of the Cu heat shield, downstream in the proton direction.

The pin on TM4 has become loose again, making it very difficult to remove the multipin connector with the last target, C#4. For the installation of the next target, UCx#41, we will drill out the hole on the target side bracket so that it doesn't contact the multipin pin. Will try to remove this pin by force in January, or if needed change out the whole multipin bracket.

  2397   Thursday, December 01, 2022, 13:45 Carla BabcockNorth Hot-CellStandard OperationTM4C#4Post irradiation inspection C#4

Post irradiation inspection of C#4 which was running in TM4/ITE was conducted at the NHC on Nov. 22 2022.

The yields from this target had been dropping and its behaviour was erratic, with the voltages on the tube and target jumping all over the place sometimes. The ion current on the FCs followed the voltages. We took this to mean the target container was breaking down.

Upon inspection we found the container looked pretty damaged - highly crystallized and distorted. The container had gone banana-shaped, but not in the usual direction. It had curved  in the direction of the ion source (see photos). The heat shield and other surrounding components were super clean, no deposits or marks at all.

2422   Monday, March 06, 2023, 11:31 Adam NewsomeNorth Hot-CellRepair  Spare Telemanipulator: Y-Motion Linear Actuator Repair

The linear actuator used for the Y-motion motor assistance on the spare telemanipulator was replaced and tested. It was observed around September 2021 that the former one which was installed was causing fuses to blow for the main 120 VAC power supply in the control box. After some troubleshooting, it was determined that the linear actuator itself did not operate smoothly - it was suspected that this caused motor overload due to additional friction. This suspicion was confirmed by operating the linear actuator independently with a power supply and measuring current draw. The part has been replaced by Thomson PPA90-58B65-08NXXX. Note: this part took over 1 year to arrive since it was first ordered. The spare telemanipulator is confirmed operational.

Update 2024-09-11: noting that this was for serial number 9351

During this repair it was noted that the Y-axis electrical translation is locked out when the Z-axis is in the fully retracted position (i.e. the Z-axis limit switch engaged). I have made a note of this in the operator manual (CRLD-1046-B Rev1 ) which can be found in docushare collection 26780

The fields in the NHC after removal of Ferran's graphite sample is 238 uSv/h. This again seems to emanate for the items in the 5 gal pail...the copper tubing from the beam window or, as I mentioned in my previous elog, the peek samples. I did ask about removing these during the graphite sample removal but was told they were not "hot".
