Isaac Earle | Crane | Development | | | Plate & pin lift assembly load testing (ITA6550) |
In mid-2020 design analysis was completed on the steel plate & pin assemblies (ITA6550) used to connect the ISAC target hall crane hook block to the module lifting yoke assembly ITA0494. The released design note is Document-184431.
In November 2020 fabrication was completed on two full plate & pin assemblies (photos attached below). As per the relevant ASME standards (identified in the design note), each assembly has been identified with serial numbers (#1 and #2). Material test reports for the steel plate and round bar material used for fabrication are attached in PDF format. For both materials the tested tensile yield strength (from the MTR) exceeds the value used in design calculations (from Document-184431): 117ksi vs 100ksi for the plate material; 138si vs 103ksi for the round bar material.
On February 8, 2021 both plate and pin assemblies were load tested by David Wang and Frank Song. The total load applied to each was 31,400 lbs (as per the ISAC target hall crane load cell) which exceeds the 125% of rated capacity (31,250 lbs) required for the test. The lifts were conducted successfully and no deformations or other damage to the assemblies were observed. Photos of the load test are also attached.
Both plate & pin assemblies are now certified for use up to their rated capacity. As specified on drawing ITA6550 and in Document-184431, a monthly visual inspection must be performed to check for structural deformation, cracks, excessive wear, and loose or missing fasteners. In addition, an annual inspection must be performed to check for structural deformation, cracks, excessive wear, loose or missing fasteners, and missing or illegible markings or safety labels. A written record of the annual inspection must be documented and kept readily available.

The crane pendant for the auxiliary hoist was upgraded to a FLEX EX2 style pendant by Canco Cranes. The installation work was performed by Canco, supervised by Tom Kauss and David Wang. Installation work was performed in one day (I2021-03-26-1).
Items installed include: new pendant (2 motion, 2 speed)
The existing antenna and receiver box located in the Target Hall were used.
The new system was tested by David Wang. Everything is reported to be in working condition. |

David Wang | Cooling | Maintenance | | | Refilling high active wtaer system and starting HA water pumps. |
High active water system is refilled. Air are drained out of system before pump to be started. Following sequence are used to bring the whole system back to operation:
1. close ITE , open ITW. Switch on the pump. Only 2A beam line related 5 water circuits are in loop in ITW. Switch off pump when system pressure is stable above 100 psi.
2. Close ITW, open ITE. Switch on the pump. Only 2A beam line related 5 water circuits are in loop in ITE. Switch off pump when system pressure is stable above 100psi.
3. Open ITW, Open ITE. Switch on pump. both ITW and ITE beam line related water circuits are in loop. Switch off pump when system pressure is stable above 100psi.
4. Close ITE open ITW. Bring ITW target module water circuits back to loop by connecting bypass fittings on to circuits. Only bring one circuit back to system at first. Switch on pump. Wait for system pressure stabilized. Then Close ITW. bring next circuit back to system. Open ITW . wait for pressure stabilized. repeat the process until all water circuit and connected with bypass fittings in ITW.
5. Check possible leak on valves, fittings, and flow sensors in ITW pit.
6. Go to electrical room, check all ITW water signal status.
7. Close ITW, Open ITE. Repeat same procedure as step 4 on ITE target module water circuits.
8. Check possible leak on valves, fittings and flow sensors in ITE pit.
9. Go to electrical room, check all ITE water signal status.
10. Open ITW. At this stage, full ITE station and half of ITW station water circuits are in operation. Check possible leak on pumps, valves, fittings, gauges on water station at TH west end.
11. Keep system in operation. Watch on - tank level , system pressure, and conductivity on resin circuit and whole system. |

Matthew Gareau | North Hot-Cell | Development | | | Removed boot from left hot manipulator |
Myself and Isaac removed the boot from the left hot manipulator.
- opened the hatch in the TH to get access to the top of the boot
- released the latch on the boot and loosened the boot from above
- closed TH hatch
- with the right manipulator we were able to detach the rest of boot
This test proved that we can remove a boot from the manipulator without having to enter into the hotcell.
Due to the physical restraints that the boot causes for the operator, we have decided to not reattach the boot with its current design.
A new design will be investigated to allow the boot to be fixed without twisting, which is the source of the problems.

Adam Newsome | Safe Module Parking | Maintenance | | | Annual Electrical and Mechanical Inspection |
An annual electrical and mechanical inspection was performed on the SMP today by Adam Newsome, Dan McDonald, and Jason Zhang as per Work Permit I2021-07-07-3. The following items were checked:
- Check condition of wiring for physical/radiation/UV damage
- OK, no signs of significant damage
- Check for cable tray debris or damage
- There were multiple shards of plastic in the cable tray - they were removed and disposed of
- Check inside control panel: components and wiring, labeling
- Labeling intact, components in good condition
- One COM wire for the relay array was loose - it was tightened
- Verify camera views
- This was not inspected but has recently been checked, and is checked prior to remote operation
- Check connectors for damage
- Check pendant for damage and verify labeling intact
- Lid open/close test
- Lid was opened and close multiple times - smooth operation, no concern
- Lid close logic was checked - OK
- Vessel rotation and limit switch check
- Both CW and CCW limits were checked, functioning
- No concern on rotation - chain drive, rotary limit switch, and cable reel all functioning normally
- Lubricate chains
- Inspect tensioners
- Tighten fasteners
- Done - OK
- Note: some concern over socket head screws in slotted parts - they should have washers. Not a critical issue but worth checking into.
- Visual inspection
Overall the inspection was successful. |
