Cameron Hodgins | | | TARGET BOAT | In progress | Sintering several carbides on tantalum foil backing | Purpose: Sinter one sample of each of TiC, VC, Cr3C2, ZrC, NbC, Mo2C, TaC, and WC on 5x10 mm tantalum foil to see if the samples are usable for SEM.
Samples were prepared using a solution of PEG (2.56 g), PVB (2.45 g), paraffin oil (1.12 g), MEK (15 mL), and EtOH (23 mL). Slurries made using 0.0013 mol of each carbide with ~230 uL of the solution. Applied via paintbrush onto 5x10 mm tantalum foil.
The samples were placed directly on the target boat, no graphite layer between. We will check to see if the tantalum foil fuses to the boat or not.
Currently (May 29th), the chamber is still pumping down. John and I will continue the procedure tomorrow.

One thermocouple was not welded on correctly and is not working.
Cooling evap2 back down, to remove target and re-weld thermocouple.
Once thermocouple replaced, will ramp back up and continue with tests/ conditioning of target.

Monday, March 14, 2016, 13:12: Stopped turbo pump

After EVAP2 was vented the thermocouple problem was fixed: it was the wire at on connector inside the box not making proper contact. The lid of the heat shield was also replaced since the one initially mounted had no holes, so one couldn't see the center block. Restarted pumping down at 4:30pm. Just started again the autoramp program: TGHT set to 300A (for the time being) and TBHT to 230A. Temperature measurements will resume tomorrow morning. |

Angelina Chen | np-Ta | | TARGET BOAT | Done | Carbonization of Heat Stabilized np-Ta Fibres Disk (1st Attempt) | Thursday, July 25, 2024, 15:18
Target container consists of two np-Ta fibres disk samples. Both disks are made from heat stabilized np-Ta fibres (150 C for 17 hours) and were pressed at 8 tons / 300 MPa.
Sample 1 was made from np-Ta fibres spun using Dope solution #1. Sample 1 disk has an average thickness of 0.727 mm and a diameter of 17.113 mm. Mass of the green sample 1 disk is 0.1957 g.
Sample 2 was made from np-Ta fibres spun using Dope solution #6. Sample 2 disk has an average thickness of 0.688 mm and a diameter of 17.123 mm. Mass of the heat stabilized fibres used to make the green sample 2 disk is 0.1860 g. Mass loss from pressing the heat stabilized fibres was virtually zero. Therefore, although the mass of the green sample 2 disk was not measured, it can be extrapolated to be 0.1860 g.
Target container was wrapped with Ta foil. Each sample disk was wrapped in graphite foil and placed inside the target container horizontally near the center.
Omega slope was initially set to 0.980. After reviewing previous logbook on np-Ti (e-log ID#633), changed the Omega slope to 0.990.
Chamber is currently being pumped down. The current reading (as of 15:40) is 4.70e-05 Torr.
Two heating schedules will be tested. Heating schedule 1 entails heating both sample disks at ~1000 C until the pressure reaches below 1.00e-06 Torr. Once heating schedule 1 is completed, sample 1 will be removed. Heating schedule 2 entails heating sample 2 to ~1800 C until the pressure reaches below 1.00e-06 Torr. TGHT is estimated to be approximately 440A/7.6V to reach 1875 C (348A/5.8V to hold temperature at 1600 C). Refer to e-log ID#605.

Anders Mjos | | | | Maintenance | Replace terminal insulator |
John Wong wrote: |
Friday, January 11, 2013, 10:59
The insulator that holds the terminals was broken when a target container was installed. The insulator had seen so much heat shine from the Cu heat-shield gaps, see attachment. Tightening the bolts on the target container might further put more force on the insulator and eventually broke it.
To prevent this to happen again. The Cu-heat shield gaps have covered with Ta-foil to prevent any shine from the target container onto the insulator. Also, a torque wrench will be used to tighten the bolts on the terminals. At this point, we don't know the max torque the insulator can tolerate. Some measurements were done on the target resistant (ohm) as a function of torque (in pounds). The best torque to tighten the terminal bolts is 150 lbs.
|
The insulators were installed with torques as indicated in the attached PDF ITD0052. A torque test was performed on the broken insulator before installation. No damage was seen on torques of up to 60 in lbs for the 1/4-20 bolts, however for torques in excess of 50 in lbs the insulator material seems to "give". |

Thermocouples were re-attached to CTL and Heat Shield (see above for channels #s).
