John Wong | Nb | | TARGET BOAT | Done | Conditioning Nb targets (for Bob) | Thursday, October 09, 2014, 17:36
Target boat consists of 5 Nb discs. Each disc is wrapped with Nb foil, and to be heated to 1400C for 4 hours.
Chamber has been pumped down to 6.5e-7 Torr. HS valves open - no leaks detected.
TGHT has ramped to 330A to maintain the 1400C temperature.
At 21:30, the target will be cooled down.
Temperature can be monitored from this link:

John Wong | Nb | | LP-SIS | Done | Bob/Tobi Nb samples | Thursday, February 25, 2016, 18:04 Wednesday, February 24, 2016, 17:29
Heat treatment of 2 bullet-shaped Nb samples in a LP-SIS container; it is just that we don't have a target boat.
Container is wrapped with 12" in total length. A strip of Nb foil is used as an underlayer for the samples to sit on top.
Chamber has been pumped down and current vacuum at 1e-6 Torr.
HS water check - good.
Target temperature 1400C
Ramping up to 250A; this should get to ~1300C. Will let it heat for over night and step up to 1400C tomorrow.
Wednesday, February 24, 2016, 17:59
I'm stopping the heating process because the camera is not working. I can't monitor the temperature. Tried to fit the camera; don't now why it fails to connect to the server.
Will look in to it tomorrow...
Thursday, February 25, 2016, 08:17
Initiated auto ramping TGHT at 2A/min.
Thursday, February 25, 2016, 17:33
Finally the camera is fixed.
Current temperature is at 1126C, TGHT at 250A. Will step up to reach 1400C.
Thursday, February 25, 2016, 18:04
TGHT stepped up to 335A to reach 1400C. (see attachment)
Will heat this for few hours and cool it at around 11pm tonight.
Thursday, February 25, 2016, 22:19
Samples have been heated over 4.5 hours.
Initiated cool down at 1A/min.
Friday, February 26, 2016, 15:43

Target boat has a layer of niobium foil on the bottom of the boat.
A niobium foil has been made with slots to hold samples [similar to when sintering endcaps] *See attached photos
Niobium samples are placed in slots, holding in place, to avoid warping.
Smaller samples closest to MIKRON IR reading [left side]
Boat is wrapped with 1 large layer of Ta foil, wrapped around the boat 3x, careful to avoid touching samples.
Loaded into evap2 today.
Pumping down now...
Wednesday, November 23, 2016, 11:45
HS water valves opened, no leaks detected.
Tapped up manually to 35A.
IGP1 = 6.4e-7 Torr
Setting auto-ramp rate at 0.2A/min to max setpoint of 250A.

Marla Cervantes | Nb | 40282-4 | TARGET BOAT | Done | Annealing of RRR-Nb test samples | Wednesday, July 17, 2019, 10:57
Annealing of five RRR Nb samples following cold-working and resistance measurements. Used to validate computational annealing model developed for SRF studies. For more information contact Norman Muller, x6398.
Desired temperature 1025 C.
Five Nb samples wrapped with Nb foil were set on a tantalum boat (coated with TaC)
the tantalum boat was wrapped with two tantalum sheets.
The boat was installed in the EVAP2.
The initial vacuum was IGP1 = 1.26e-6 Torr.
Ramping rate 5 A/min to final current of 200 A.
Wednesday, July 17, 2019, 11:18
At 155 A, the ramping rate was changed to 1 A/min
Wednesday, July 17, 2019, 11:28
The ramping was stopped at 167 A.
Wednesday, July 17, 2019, 11:57
Conditions:
IGP1 = 1.65e-6 Torr
TGHT = 2.54 V, 174.46 A
Temperature ~ 950 C
Wednesday, July 17, 2019, 18:07
IGP1 = 1.16 e-6
TGHT = 3.18 V, 206.7 A
Temperature ~950 C
Cooling ramp 10 A/min
Vented with air
Suggestion for future annealing:
Use tantalum boat without TaC coating. |

Friday, September 27, 2019, 18:13
HS water valves opened, no leaks detected.
Tapped up manually to 40 A.
IGP1 = 9.54e-7 Torr
Setting auto-ramp rate at 0.2 A/min to max setpoint of 100 A.

Setting auto-ramp at 1 A/min to 300 A lead to ~1200 C.
Autoramping at 1 A/min to 400 A will stop at 1400 C.
Temperature reading is 1400 C at:
TGHT = 5.61 V, 345.656 A
The temperature reading went to 1408 C on Omega and 1417 C on Micron so the current was dropped to 342.537 A and 5.56 V
The temperature went to 1418 C on Omega and the current was dropped to 339.281 A
After 4 hours at 1400 C, the Nb was cooled down
The final pressure was 3.07e-7 Torr
The EVAP2 was vented with air and the Nb was removed. |

John Wong | Endcaps | 40282-5 | TARGET BOAT | Done | Sintering Ta-coated endcaps (temp measured) | Thursday, September 25, 2014, 17:32
Target boat is filled with Ta-coated endcaps. The caps are stacked together. In between each cap, a piece of graphite foil is used for separation so the Ta caps would not fused.
See link for photos:

The boat is wrapped with 3-layers of heatshields. The chamber is currently being pumped down.
TGHT will be ramped up to 580A and the temperature will be measured.
Monday, September 29, 2014, 11:12
TGHt was stepped up to 40A on last Friday and chamber continues to pump down over the weekend.
Vac @ 2.56e-6 Torr, mp @ 19mTorr.
Ramping up TGHT 580A at 1.0A/min.
Monday, September 29, 2014, 11:50
TGHT tripped off at 53A. Reduce ramping rate to 0.5A/min for now.
Monday, September 29, 2014, 16:17
Vacuum is coming down to 9.5e-7 Torr. Increased ramping rate to 1.0A/min.
Tuesday, September 30, 2014, 11:59
TGHT reached to 580A/10.18V. Target has been heated at that current for almost 12 hrs. Vac @ 4.9e-7 Torr.
Local temp measured with Mikron = (1500C + 250 C correction) = 1750C
Cooling down at 2A/min.
Thursday, October 02, 2014, 11:13
The coating is fully sintered; no sign of any damage on the endcaps.
Process is successful.

Laura Lambert | Endcaps | 40282-5 | TARGET BOAT | In progress | Sintering TaC coating on Ta endcaps | Tuesday, May 26, 2015, 13:06
Endcaps were sprayed with TaC coating and let dry.
Each endcap is wrapped separately with a sheet of graphite foil and stacked in the target boat [see image]
The target boat is wrapped with 3-layers of Ta-heat shield.
The boat is installed in EVAP2, chamber is currently being pumped down.
Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 08:50
HS water valves opened, no leaks detected.
Stepped up manually to 35A.
Initiated auto-ramp at 0.2A/min yesterday afternoon.
TGHT = 254A, 3.56V.
IGP1 = 5.9e-7 Torr.
Increasing ramping rate to 1.0A/min with a max setpoint of 400A.

TGHT has been at 400A for almost 6 hours. Temp at 1500C.
Cooling down to 0A at 1A/min.
Chamber will be vented to inspect the caps.
May have to remove the graphite foil wrapped on the caps and re-sintered the caps to 1800C.
