Wednesday, December 18, 2024, 11:54 FC) extracted for mass scan - mass scan beginning now . Background record appears to be functioning well, although it is high. comparatively to old tests. It could be that those old tests were recording irregularly low background, given the temporary solution that was implemented.

Wednesday, December 18, 2024, 12:13   it seems that a spark took down many optics elements. Going to allow conditioning at 30kV for a while before restarting .     - optics elements down due to pressure sensor TMS:IG6 timing out. Vacuum group notified. Will likely bypass the interlock temporarily if it cannot be fixed fast. This should get a more permanent solution as it has failed a number of times before.

Wednesday, December 18, 2024, 13:06    sparks are occurring on average approximately once every 10 minutes. they don't seem to be tripping of any supplies or optics (after IG6). but this spark frequency is significantly higher than observed on other targets lately.

Wednesday, January 08, 2025, 10:32 - water cooling all on. no effect on vacuum pressure.

Wednesday, January 08, 2025, 10:33    - Increased argon pressure in the gas line has no effect on vacuum pressure. it is registered on the pressure gauge at feedthrough.-

  - However, roughing pump doesn't seem to be venting the argon gas line. I disconnected the copper line to the venting valve to confirm pump activity. - no activity detectable.

- removed pump from assembly. switching on by itself shows no evidence of pump functionality. When on, pump is heating to very hot temperatures. I've emailed Edi at vacuum group to investigate further.

Wednesday, January 08, 2025, 15:02   - Vacuum group says that the pump is dead. We can replace it if we'd like, but i've created a temporary solution by connecting the argon venting valve to the backing pumps. For the sake of being careful (although this may be overly cautious), we must avoid opening this venting valve without first isolating the connection from the turbo pumps via closing TSG:PV1

Thursday, January 09, 2025, 14:37   reading 2.91e-8A at FC0 . found Argon peak at 40 exactly. MB1 current 96.4561 A

Thursday, January 09, 2025, 14:42 using COIL CATHODE scan program to optimize. (data file measure_id=9106)  A local maximum was identified at 140V with 40A coil current. However, a short seems to show up when the cathode voltage reaches ~130V. it lets through only ~10mA at 130 and then will release up to at least 100mA at 140V.

As time passes, the sustained voltage drops over time, given a current limit of 100mA. it dropped to ~50V. On subsequent increases of the power supply, current begins leaking through at ~65V.

Given this, I will continue (while monitoring the cathode power supply) with a cathode coil of 50V 90A.

Checked the Archiver and the striptool: TSG:TP1A & TP1B tripped on Oct. 10, at 7:53am. Both pumps showed timeout, but the AC breakers were not tripped. Also, checked with MCR: they were no power bumps or cooling water problems around that time.

Discussed it with Kazuya Negishi from Controls: there were no PLC problems. Kazuya and I would monitor the trips.

After inspecting the ion source, and revising the electrical connections, I suspect that the TBHT was floating all the time and only when it was in contact with the plasma electrode it held HV.

When the plasma electrode was removed, there was no reference whatsoever, and the ions were not extracted.

It seems then that the resistor R4 (ISK4562D) is necessary to provide a reference to the TBHT  in a similar way R1 provides one to extraction electrode.

Tuesday, February 09, 2021, 20:52: Installing R4. If the anode works this time, it will be worth checking why this reference is necessary. From the electric diagram, the chassis ground should be HV ground.

Hi Fernando,

There are no plans for Cu-LCW system to be switched off today.  I believe they are still working on correcting the issue that caused the trip two days ago.  Once it is corrected and we are ready to switch to the secondary pump, the switch over "should" be relatively invisible with possibly a slight drop in line pressure.

Friday, February 12, 2021, 10:07: In order to trouble shoot the ISAC TS, I  let the sparks to continue. Initially, they occurred in the extraction electrode spark gap and were both visible and audible. However, they stop and the instabilitiy was present.

I rise the voltage again and let the spark happen for a longer period of time.

I saw how the collimator wire on the far back of the source tray was moving as if a hurricane was inside, which is very strange. I followed up the wire and I saw how it was sparking to something (see attached photo)

I say something because from the angle is difficult to say if it was going to the chamber itself or to the HS waterlines. Both scenarios are concerning

First of all the collimator is never biased and it if any case the jacket  (MHV cable) is on ground ground

In case the discharge happened from wire to the chamber, then the collimator wire was charging up, it is extremely important o note that the jacketed cable goes outside the box very close to one of the turbos.

In the other scenario where the discharge was happening from the wire to the HS waterlines, that is, HV to ground, the simply creating a clearance should be enough. In this case as well is relevant to know that this jackted cable leaves the farday cage.

I will create clearance from collimator wire to HS waterlines.

The gauge inside the service cap is working now, as it actually never broke, a manual valve was still close inside the faraday cage.

Moving on, I tested the code as I want to implement a a couple of things: record a bidimensional anode current to make sure I capture any chance with the coil (if any), use temperature estimation from heating power as well.

When running a magnet-anode scan on sodium I triggered the high efficienct regime. This indicates that the cathode is either hotter or closer. With 280 A I am inclined on the latter.

The regime is unstable as the voltage fluctates as well as the ion current. Over a period of two hours

Tuesday, July 20, 2021, 17:22:   TBHT to 240 @ -2A/min.

Tuesday, July 20, 2021, 17:47:  IG1 reacts to the "sparks" observed on the anode leackage current.

Lowering the anode voltage to 0 V. I'll go on-site tomorrow to check the state of the grid and to check if there are visible sparks inside the chamber.

Wednesday, July 21, 2021, 12:40: entries from early today lost I'll try to summarize what has happened:

grid still fine

Manually sweeping the anode but no visual of any kind inside the vacuum. IG1 still reacts to sudden increase of leakage current but nothing observed inside the vacuum chamber.

anode leakage current responds to decreasing the target heating current when lowering to 235A.

When going to 200 A, the anode leakage current drop to 0 mA when the cathode reached 211.

Now the cathode gets current limited as of 1 V.

grid still fine.

Thursday, July 22, 2021, 18:16: Turbos on.

Thursday, July 22, 2021, 18:25: TP1A  timed out. TSG:CG1A is larger than TSG:CG1, that is the roughing lines are higher than the vacuum chamber.

Thursday, July 22, 2021, 18:27: Bypassing TSG:BV1 to open it.

Thursday, July 22, 2021, 18:28: Turbo at speed.

Thursday, July 22, 2021, 18:28: Bypass removed.

Thursday, July 22, 2021, 18:28: IG1 on.

Friday, July 23, 2021, 09:16: IG1 @ 1.69e-6 T.

Friday, July 23, 2021, 09:17: Waterlines open. No vacuum response

Friday, July 23, 2021, 10:09: While checking the gas connections I found out that inside the faraday cage there are a couple of connections missing:

Coil PS chasis ground disconnected

Resistor between  A and C (tbht pos and tght neg) disconnected.

Friday, July 23, 2021, 15:29: Gas system taken out to properly install a new "tee" union.

Friday, July 23, 2021, 15:29: IG1 @ 1.34e-6 T.

Friday, July 23, 2021, 15:52: Power/ sources on.

Friday, July 23, 2021, 15:54: Auto-ramping TGHT/TBHT to 580 A/ 280 A @ 2A/min

Friday, July 23, 2021, 15:58: IV4 open.

Saturday, July 24, 2021, 13:07: IG1 @ 1.25 e-6 T.

Saturday, July 24, 2021, 18:34: BIAS / EE / EZL @ 30 / -1.5 / 13 kV. One spark when Bias reached 30 kV.

Saturday, July 24, 2021, 18:36: Two consecutive sparks. Lowering to bias  29.5  kV to let it conditioned there for at least 10 minutes.

Saturday, July 24, 2021, 18:46: Bias to 30 kV. No sparks.

Saturday, July 24, 2021, 18:59. No sparks. IG1 @ 1.16e-6

Saturday, July 24, 2021, 19:26: Anode gets current limited  as of 2 V. Maybe there is a short somewhere else either inside the vacuum box, or on the service cap. Will check tomorrow

Saturday, July 24, 2021, 19:30: BIAS / EE / EZL @ 0 kV.

Saturday, July 24, 2021, 19:30: Auto-cooling to 0 A @ -2A/min

Monday, July 26, 2021, 09:00: IG1 @ 4.58e-7 T.

Monday, July 26, 2021, 09:17: No visible sparks

Monday, July 26, 2021, 09:22: Power sources off.

Monday, July 26, 2021, 13:20: After some tests I can conclude a couple of things:

  • Anode/Cathode voltage power supply works fine and draws the right current for a 100 kOhm resistor.
  • When all cables are disconnected from TBHT and TGHT F/Ts there is continuity between them and HV common.

Monday, July 26, 2021, 14:52: IV4 closed

Monday, July 26, 2021, 14:53: Turbos off.

Oops!, forgot to turned off IG1 but interlock did it for me :p

Monday, July 26, 2021, 17:19: After opening the vaccum chamber I found the portion of the capillary that goes to the target was touching the heatshield. Confirmed continuity with a multimeter.

Manually move it away and no continuity confirmed with multimeter.

FTs A-D recconected.

Bypassing anode interlock to check there is no short. Confirmed.

Preparing to close and pump.

Monday, July 26, 2021, 17:55: Turbos on.

Monday, July 26, 2021, 18:03 : TP1A timed out ...again

Monday, July 26, 2021, 18:03: Bypassing BV1A. TP1A reset and on. turbos at speed.

 Monday, July 26, 2021, 18:05: IG1 on.

Monday, July 26, 2021, 18:26: IG1 @ 1.97e-5 T.

Monday, July 26, 2021, 22:33: IG1 @ 2.41e-6 T

Monday, July 26, 2021, 22:33: IV4 open.

Monday, July 26, 2021, 22:55: BIAS/EZL/EE to 10/6/1 kV. No problem. All set to 0.000 kV again

Monday, July 26, 2021, 22:57: Coil to 10 A. Anode to 100 V.. No problem. All set to 0 again.

 Monday, July 26, 2021, 22:59: Auto-ramping TGHT/TBHT to 580/280 A @ 2A/min.

Tuesday, July 27, 2021, 06:32: IG1 @ 1.52e-6 T.

At 01:30, approximately 10 minutes after TBHT heater reached the desired current, the anode went from 0 to 1.5 V.

Tried to put anode voltage to 100 V but it got current limited as of 2 V.

Given that before heating the anode voltage was fine, I think the gas tube move again and made contact with the heatshield.

I will need to open this again :(

 Tuesday, July 27, 2021, 06:41: Auto-cooling TGHT/TBHT to 0 A @ -4A/min

Tuesday, July 27, 2021, 09:08: Heaters @ 0 A. Anode still gets current limited.

Tuesday, July 27, 2021, 09:09: IV4 close. Timed out.

 Tuesday, July 27, 2021, 09:09: IG1 off.

Tuesday, July 27, 2021, 09:09: Turbos off.

Tuesday, July 27, 2021, 11:13: Venting.

Tuesday, July 27, 2021, 11:58: Gas tube move and end up touching the  heatshield again. When try to adjust it to add an insulator as an spacer, the gas line de-coupled from the target.

removing the target for re-installation and clearance addition.

Replace Ta capillary going into the target with the one from previous febiad as it felt sturdy and had better shape for clearance with the HS.
