Anders started TCS turbo-pumps yesterday. The TCS and TM4 pumping down is good so far. I started TCS water pumps this morning for TCS water flow check.

2017-05-17 morning:  Stopped the water pumps. The field around the TM4 is high because of spent target in SHC. The water flow measurement will be delayed to this Friday.

UCx#19 has been removed from TM4 and UCx#20 installed.

UCx#19 still had water in it at pressure and sprayed when the VCR was undone. It was quickly re-tightened but not before significant water pooled beside the main Mykroy standoff and table. Contacted Anders would suggested to soak it up with some wipes and continue, which I did.

New target fasteners including high current. High current fasteners torqued to 130 in lbs.

Entry  Friday, May 12, 2017, 07:42, David Wang, Crane, Repair, , , TH crane burning smell, smoke, and big noise on east side main hoist brake assembly.

This morning, when I prepare for today's crane check, The crane made a very strong noise without any load during the full speed up motion. I stopped the crane right away, and noticed that east side of main hoist motor area was smoking . The crane was moved to east end. And, I climbed up to the top, and found the smoke is coming form brake side, and should be produced by braking. The smell is same as before.Unless other thing is wrong,  I think Gordon crane technician has to adjust the gap to a proper distance on both side of the main hoist. I feel very uncomfortable by operating the crane this way. They have to figure out what is wrong on these new brake assembly installation.

2017-05-12. This morning , Crane technicians increased both side of main hoist brake gaps today. They found on east side brake assembly, The gap is automatically closed after some  jogging motions. Peter think this is caused by torque produced by automatic adjustment springs on brake. This torque rotate  the gap adjustment device and closed the gap.  We operate the crane for a while with 20000lbs load on it after gap adjustment. The rattling sound is still there at slow up motion.  But, The main hoist braking sound is softer and gentle comparing to past month. This sound is more close to the sound before we replaced the brake assembly. So, This adjustment could be right in my view.  They checked  gaps after 0.5 hours operation. Everything is still fixed there . No change. They suggest we keep operating the main hoist, and they will be back on next Monday check again.  I operated the main hoist up and down in different speed motion for 1 hour after they left. Everything works fine. Braking are gentle. No strange sound and smoke during up or down. I will do  more operation on Monday morning before they come. Lets see the result after their checking.

2017-05-15 This morning, 20minutes of crane main hoist up and down test with lots jogging and braking. The braking sound is softer and gentle. Everything works fine.

2017-05-15.  Gordon crane technician Peter came in during lunch time. Both side main hoist brake gaps have been checked. They are still at the same position as last Friday. The gap is not changed after operation. Peter will be back on next Monday and check everything again.

The gap between the north face of the NHC roof block and the target hall north wall in the area where the NHC inlet ducting will be installed has been sealed with Sikaflex 1a flexible polyurethane sealant applied over foam backer-rod.

Entry  Wednesday, May 10, 2017, 14:00, Anders Mjos, South Hot-Cell, Development, , ITE-Ta-LP-FEBIAD, Test target examination

Chad and Anders inspected the test target in the hot cell today. The lid had been previously removed.

  • The EE looked to have performed well.
  • A piece of Ta foil was found inside the heat shield. It is not clear if this has been there during operation or if it entered the heat shield while in the hot cell. The foil has markings which indicate that it has seen heat.
  • Travis measured 40 MOhm at 500V between heat shield and anode after the target was removed.

TM3 service tray side panel is cleaned and installed back to TM3 this morning. I visually inspected service tray insulators. Nothing is changed comparing to inspection before.Nine screws are installed on  panel to hold it onto TM3.

Entry  Tuesday, May 09, 2017, 07:00, David Wang, Conditioning Station, Repair, TM3, , Follow up Aurelia's entry, TM3 and TCS current limits investigation.

Aurelia and I investigated this current limit issue May 8th. First, By separating TM3 from TCS. we found the problem is on TCS side. We did a Megga test on TM3 as well. TM3 is good at 1KV megga test. After that, The insulators between TCS to ground is test. they are good which could hold 1G ohm at 1000V megga test. So the problem should be on power supply side  including power supply itself ,cables and transformer. Later, Tom and John found the TCS bias HV cable from power supply to HV chase top in faraday cage is broken down. It can not hold 5KV on HV test now. This cable should hold 100KV. But not this time. Tom also found  the adapter on Faraday cage could be designed in a better way. The broken cable was removed yesterday. John and Tom will order an exactly same cable from Glassmen.

Entry  Saturday, May 06, 2017, 13:30, Aurelia Laxdal, Conditioning Station, Repair, TM3, no target, TM3 current limiting

Today the voltage was raised from 65kV to 65.7kV. After about 10min at this level TM3 started current limiting. TM3 was not sparking when this happened.

ISAC OPS turned it OFF and then tried to ramp it back ON, but could not do it due to the current limiting.

I turned OFF/ON the PS (locally) 20ming ago and and then tried to get it back from the Control Room, but around 4-5kV it started current limiting.

Turned everything OFF on EPICS for the time being. We'll investigate on Monday.

Over the night the sparking rate at 65kV was from 6 to 2 sparks per hour. It tripped OFF once over the night: backing valves closed, tripping the turbos, tripping IG1 and turning OFF the BIAS. At that time ISAC OPS got it back smoothly.

Entry  Friday, May 05, 2017, 19:36, Aurelia Laxdal, Conditioning Station, Repair, TM3, no target, TM3 HV test at TCS up to 65kV

Today TM3 HV conditioning went up to 65kV. I'll leave it here over night. ISAC OPS have instructions to keep an alarm on the HV, and ion gauge and turbo pump (TP2 tripped 3 times due to sparking).

Entry  Friday, May 05, 2017, 11:53, David Wang, Conditioning Station, Repair, TM3, , sparking on TM3 serice cap top.

Sparking was found this morning inside HV cover on TCS in TH while TM3 was HV conditioning at TCS. The TCS bias was set to 50KV when I found this spark. It sparks between HV cover front side wall to a KF 25 clamp on HS water terminal. The KF 25clamp is used in this situation on HS water line top because the HS line is opened inside module, and we need a vacuum seal on the top of this line.  Actually, The clap is much smaller than the corona ring on HS terminal, and the corona ring is more close to side wall. But there is a 90 degree straight corner on this clam. So the spark happened between the side wall and this 90degree corner on the clamp. We can not change the clap now since it will break vacuum. So, we decide to do HV test without HV cover installed onTM3 at TCS. A work permit is issued for  this. Lock out procedure: Document-70039 is clarified in WP.

Entry  Friday, May 05, 2017, 11:06, David Wang, Crane, Standard Operation, TM3, , TH crane is used for 5 shielding blocks transferring.

TH crane is used for transferring five shielding blocks(30000lbs) today. All brakes work fine. Mostly, I do not need crane slow up motion for this job so during 1 hour moving, no rattle sound and burning smell has been found.  I think TH crane is good to use as we decided.

Entry  Thursday, May 04, 2017, 19:10, Aurelia Laxdal, Conditioning Station, Repair, TM3, no target, TM3 HV test at TCS up to 50kV

Today TM3 was conditioned up to 50kV. At 50kV sparking started and to go higher in voltage it needs more conditioning time. Lowered it to 49kV for the night.

Entry  Thursday, May 04, 2017, 14:06, David Wang, Conditioning Station, Repair, TM3, , A vacuum to air leak on TM3 service cap round side panel was found and fixed..

During TM3 roughing down yesterday afternoon,The vacuum gauges CG1 and CG1S stopped at 1.20 torr and refused to drop down. Leak detector was used to found where the problem was. LD was in rough detecting mode and showed 2.7xE-6 atm.cc/sec as base leak rate.  Spray medium amount of helium to TM3 service top, and found this leak was on round panel of TM3 side wall. LR climbed to E-4 atm.cc/sec range on helium spraying. In my vie,One 10# socket head screw was not tightened properly after cameras job and caused this.  The TCS was vented. The panel was took off and reinstalled. O-ring on the panel  was replaced by a new one as well. Then TCS was pumped down again. The leak disappeared .  All turbo pumps on TCS and TM3 were started successfully later.
