  2372   Monday, October 03, 2022, 14:58 Matthew GareauNorth Hot-CellRepairTM4SiC#43 and C#4Loose multipin guide pin

Today while I was removing the SiC#43 it was noticed that the multipin guide pin was loose.

This made it difficult to remove the target, and the multipin shoulder bolts removal was required.

With the loose pin it was not possible to attach the multipin for the target C#4.

Chad was able to tighten the multipin guide pin enough, however it became obvious that the pin could not be removed when it was attempted.

With the pin tightened, the target C#4 was installed and all checks were good.

It was recommend that once the C#4 target is removed the TM4 will need some repair to remove the multipin guide pin.

Chad - Also it was noted that the guide pin (ITA6453) in question showed signs of plating or heat (see pictures I've added)

2378   Monday, October 17, 2022, 08:07 David WangITE/ITWRepairTM4 A small leak on target station secondaryvacuum back up line by ITH MP1S.
A small leak in target station secondary vacuum back up line is observed. It affects ITH CG2S,CG1S and CG4SA. Current draw on TP1s and TP4S is getting higher(above 1A) because of it. An internal leak in ITH MP1S is suspected by first round investigation. Close watching on system and further investigation are needed.
Initial Action Taken: none

17-Oct-2022 Comment by David Wang: On OCt 14th, Replaced a flexible hose on MP1S pump exhaust port, but did not solve the issue. High frequency vibration was sensed by hand on MP1S pump inlet and outlet ports. Pump height and position in pit are adjusted slightly in pit to reduce vibration. After, ITHCG2 and ITW CG4SA got a huge improvement in past 3 days. All back up line pressure are stabilized at normal operation status. Still, close watching on this issue is needed to ensure the present status is stabilized in long term.

The issue was returned after shielding block installation Monday morning at 8:30am. Investigated further,  I temporarily installed a turbopump used cooling fan on MP1s to improve pump heat dissipation. And a room fan is put outside on shielding blocks opening hole to increase air circulation into pit. Since then,  everything is perfect. All secondary turbo pumps current draw is around 0.5 to 0.6A which is the best.  I guess that short duo 10 pump life we observed in past could be related to high pump operation temperature in pit as well. We may increase the pump life if air circulation around the pump could be improved. A permanent solution is needed for it.

Conducted PIE on SiC#44, which failed online. It had a cathode short, a target short and an anode short by the time we called the experiment off. In the post irradiation examination, two clear marks where the target legs touched the heat shield were found (see attachments 1 and 2). No marks were found to indicate where the cathode short would have been. The fibreglass sheath covering the anode wire where it passes over top of the coil was destroyed, must have been a result of sparking (see attachment 3). No other issues noticed, grid looked fine, though close inspection is difficult.

The pin on TM4 has become loose again, making it very difficult to remove the multipin connector with the last target, C#4. For the installation of the next target, UCx#41, we will drill out the hole on the target side bracket so that it doesn't contact the multipin pin. Will try to remove this pin by force in January, or if needed change out the whole multipin bracket.

  2397   Thursday, December 01, 2022, 13:45 Carla BabcockNorth Hot-CellStandard OperationTM4C#4Post irradiation inspection C#4

Post irradiation inspection of C#4 which was running in TM4/ITE was conducted at the NHC on Nov. 22 2022.

The yields from this target had been dropping and its behaviour was erratic, with the voltages on the tube and target jumping all over the place sometimes. The ion current on the FCs followed the voltages. We took this to mean the target container was breaking down.

Upon inspection we found the container looked pretty damaged - highly crystallized and distorted. The container had gone banana-shaped, but not in the usual direction. It had curved  in the direction of the ion source (see photos). The heat shield and other surrounding components were super clean, no deposits or marks at all.

2410   Wednesday, January 25, 2023, 06:52 David WangITEStandard OperationTM4UCx#41ITE primary and secondary vacuum vessel air to vacuum seals leak check.

ITE primary and secondary vacuum vessel air to vacuum seals leak check was done this week. One leak has been found on IG1S feed through to entrance module surface seal. It explains what we saw on ITE IG1S readings change(from low E-7 torr to 1Xe-6 torr) on December 22, 2022.  This leak seal will be replaced soon.

2023-Jan -27.  O-ring seal 229# was replaced on ITEIG1S feedthrough to entrance module surface sealing. Also o-ring seal 034# was replaced on the blank off cover beside the feed through to entrance module surface sealing. Since these o-rings are too close to each other. It is better to replace both of them to avoid misreading in leak check.
