David Wang | ITE | Standard Operation | | | ITE 4 turbopumps are started for preoperation check. |
ITE TP3,4, 1S,and 4S were started successfully this afternoon. All pump current draws were below 1.5A . IG1S was switched on. I have no local controller so TP1 and TP2 on TM4 at MSP can not be checked. IG1S was hard to switch on at first. It timed out and showed error 09 code. I removed the connector back cap, and it could be switched on after. I will look on this issue.
Turbo -pumps were stopped last night at 6 pm. All four pumps worked good during check. For IG1S switching on issue, the problem either caused by over pressure(No TP1, 2 in ITE) or because coaxial cable was pinched by connector cap and caused bad contact on pin to cable. I modified the connector cap inside by opening more space for cable passing through the cap. The cap is installed back. The gauge will be switched on next week again. We keep watch on it |

Adam Newsome | Crane | Maintenance | | | Pail Handling Tool - Annual Inspection |
The pail handling tool which is used to move 5 gallon pails around the target hall was inspected by A. Newsome, N. Jorgenson, and E. Lahe. The main tool as well as spare were checked for the following items. The tools are in good, working condition. It is noted that some fasteners on the hook assembly were slightly loose, but have been tightened.
- Inspect structural integrity of long tube - check for bending, warpage, dents, cracks, rust/corrosion
- Inspect structural integrity of hook assembly - check for bending, warpage, dents, cracks, rust/corrosion
- Inspect fasteners - check all fasteners installed as per drawings, fasteners are tight
- Inspect crane interface assembly - check for damage and wear where the tool connects to the crane
- Check alignment - verify the tool connects to the crane and hangs vertically with no major misalignment (this step was not done - alignment is regularly checked during operations, and there was no concern as the tube was straight)
Note: these tools are being inspected monthly by D. Wang and F. Song. |

Antoniette Yap | Spent Target Vault | Maintenance | | | Annual Inspection of Main and Mini Storage Vaults |
The annual inspection of the mini-storage vault and main storage vault was completed June 23, 2023. The following items were checked:
- Cabling and cable management
- Connectors
- Controls box - internal wiring and components, functionality
- Limit switches - functionality, wiring, mounting
- Motor
- Bearings
- Set screws
- Miscellaneous fasteners
The inspection was generally successful. A couple of minor findings were:
- Bearings for both the main and mini storage vaults must be greased. This is planned for a different day as it involves removing the mini vault's door.
- There was a small piece of metal on the track for the mini storage vault which was causing the door to "bump" over it as it passed over. This piece was removed and the door behaved normally.
- The wheel track for the main storage vault was dirty - it was cleaned
- It was suggested that the 120 VAC power cable for the mini storage vault controls box should be connectorized - this will be added to the "to-do list" for the future

Adam Newsome | Assembly/Bench Test | Development | | | Modifications to wire ropes for pails within existing F-308s |
Based on a request from CNL (attached), modifications were made to the wire ropes protruding through the tops of F-308s to add a crimped loop which acts as a lifting feature. Tests were performed (report attached) on 10 sample units to validate the strength of these loops, since each loop could not be tested in-situ once the pails were already packed in F-308s. CNL has reviewed and approved the test report.
Wire ropes within the following F-308s, which were staged for shipping as of June 20, 2023, were modified to include the lifting loop:
- 06
- 13
- 15
- 16
- 19
- 20
- 21
- 22
Each lifting loop was:
- Crimped according to the same procedure, using the same parts and tools, as the 10 sample units
- Measured using a tape measure to confirm the 3" size specified by CNL
- Checked using a go/no-go gauge provided from the crimp tool manufacturer
- "Pull tested" by hand as a quick check to confirm the crimps were successful (not a quantitative and official test, but a secondary qualitative "feel good" check)
As of the time of writing this e-log, TRIUMF believes these F-308s to be ready to ship. |

An annual electrical and mechanical inspection was performed on the SMP today by Adam Newsome, Travis Cave, Eric Lahe, Maico Dalla Valle, Antoniette Yap, and Jason Zhang as per Work Permit I2023-06-21-4. The following items were checked:
- Check condition of wiring for physical/radiation/UV damage
- OK, no signs of significant damage
- Check for cable tray debris or damage
- There were multiple items in the cable tray which do not belong there - misc. pieces of wood and metal... these items were not disposed of but should be in the near future
- Check inside control panel: components and wiring, labeling
- Labeling intact, components in good condition
- Misc. random wires pulled to check... one ground wire was loose - it was tightened
- Verify camera views
- This was not inspected in detail but signal status was checked, and is checked prior to remote operation
- Check connectors for damage
- Check pendant for damage and verify labeling intact
- Lid open/close test
- Lid was opened and close multiple times - smooth operation, no concern
- Lid close logic was checked - OK
- Vessel rotation and limit switch check
- Both CW and CCW limits were checked, functioning
- No concern on rotation - chain drive, rotary limit switch, and cable reel all functioning normally
- Lubricate chains
- Not done - should be done next year
- Inspect tensioners
- Tighten fasteners
- Not all fasteners were checked - washers will be replaced soon so this was not deemed necessary
- Approximately 50 washers are missing for socket head screws in slotted parts. Not safety critical but they should be replaced soon.
- Visual inspection
Overall the inspection was successful. |

Carla Babcock | North Hot-Cell | Standard Operation | | TiC#5 | TiC#5 post irradiation inspection results |
The TiC#5 post irradiation inspection was done on Wed. June 14 and Mon. June 19. This target didn't have any obvious issues but it didn't produce much beam. The inspection revealed that the container was quite embrittled and showed significant damage, though it was not broken. The FEBIAD grid looked fine, despite the large anode current draw (indicating that current was flowing elsewhere). The gas line looked fine though the gas injection to this target looked as if it wasn't connected. But there was a plug on the unused line, so it must have been correct. No other obvious signs that would explain the poor performance. Pictures are can be found here https://documents.triumf.ca/docushare/dsweb/View/Collection-37913 |

Carla Babcock | North Hot-Cell | Standard Operation | | SiC#45 | SiC#45 post irradiation inspection |
Looked at SiC#45 in the hot cell. Looked very clean, no deposits on the heat shield or other components. Target also looked very straight. Only issue we saw was sparking marks on the EE side that faces the ground electrode, in several spots. This target had a bout of sparking when ramping up the protons, so I guess that was the location. Will look for matching spark marks on the ground electrode next time TM4 is in the hot cell. Forgot to take picutres... |

Adam Newsome | Spent Target Vault | Maintenance | | | Mini Storage Vault: Bearing Lubrication |
The bearings on the mini storage vault were lubricated. It is suspected that this has never been done. It is suggested that this be performed every two years.
A draft procedure will be created for this job, but at a high level, this process involves:
- Opening the door fully
- Disconnection of the motor, limit switches, and cable management system
- Attachment of a lifting magnet to the door itself
- Raising the door
- Lubricating bearings
- Reversing the process to re-assemble
The entire job took less than 1 hour to complete.

Jason Zhang | Crane | Development | | | Cleanup of camera installation on target hall crane, installation of replacement laser |
The cleanup of the ISAC Target Hall crane and installation of the new SICK laser which replaced the IBEO laser for the EW crane position was completed on Aug 03 2023.
The clean up tasks which were completed: (Removal of tape viewing camera, Removal of tape, Installation of extension cord, Consolidation of power supplies for the lasers and removal of old laser)
Currently power bar is still present to act as an extension cable. This will be removed when 2m extension cord is made and put in next target exchange cycle.
The installation and testing of new SICK Laser:
1. Calibration points were taken at the 4 corner limits of the crane. North South and East West positions were recorded.
2. Crane was parked at the ladder access position and mounting bracket was machined and installed.
3. A new cable was made and installed for the SICK laser. Continuity test was performed from the control room and crane to ensure pinout of the laser worked with existing serial communication setup in the control room PC.
4. The feedback values from the new SICK laser and old IBEO laser were compared to determine that a calibration offset of 0.06m was needed in the Laser Position Feedback program.
5. Laser Position Feedback program was re-compiled to communicate with 2x SICK lasers with the calibration offset value included in the EW feedback position. (Laser Crane PositionDlg.cpp)
6. Calibration points were taken at the 4 corner limits of the crane again with the new Laser. North South and East West positions were recorded.
There was less than 0.1% variance between the new laser and old laser which is well within the tolerance of the lasers themselves. It can be determined that it was properly calibrated.
