Turns out the vacuum limits have not been fully updated when they should have been and the old ones still apply.

IGP1 reached 8e-5 Torr which tripped off the system.

TGHT = 80A, 1.05V when the system tripped.

Final conditions TGHT = 485 A, 8.25V Temperature = 1800 C

The transfer tube stayed at 1800 C for 4 hours

Annealing of five RRR Nb samples following cold-working and resistance measurements.  Used to validate computational annealing model developed for SRF studies.  For more information contact Norman Muller, x6398.

Desired temperature 1025 C.

Five Nb samples wrapped with Nb foil were set on a tantalum boat (coated with TaC)

the tantalum boat was wrapped with two tantalum sheets.

The boat was installed in the EVAP2.

The initial vacuum was IGP1 = 1.26e-6 Torr.

Ramping rate 5 A/min to final current of 200 A.

The niobium samples are wrapped in a Nb foil.

Tapped up manually to 40 A.

IGP1 = 9.54e-7 Torr

Setting auto-ramp rate at 0.2 A/min to max setpoint of 100 A.

Vacuum stable.

Setting auto-ramp at 1 A/min to 300 A lead to ~1200 C.

Autoramping at 1 A/min to 400 A will stop at 1400 C.

Temperature reading is 1400 C at:

TGHT = 5.61 V, 345.656 A

The temperature reading went to 1408 C on Omega and 1417 C on Micron so the current was dropped to 342.537 A and 5.56 V

The temperature went to 1418 C on Omega and the current was dropped to 339.281 A


After 4 hours at 1400 C, the Nb was cooled down

The final pressure was 3.07e-7 Torr 

The EVAP2 was vented with air and the Nb was removed.

Thermocouple de-attached at about 400A.

Target cooled down. 1A/10s

Turbo and roughing pump off. System left with present vacuum over night. Tomorrow inspection.

2020-08-06 10:48am Turbo was turned on by Marla in the morning. Vacuum IGP1 4e-6Torr. Water leak check performed, everything good to start heating up target. Waiting for Anders confirmation to start.

2020-08-06 4:38pm after changing setup to metallic connections only. Roughing on. After some minutes abnormal behavior in vacuum.

Turning water off to see if it is a small water leak.

Water purged, no change in vacuum.

 

IEVAP2:RV1 was closed. After opening, normal vacuum behavior recovered. The valve is automatically closing when reaching 100Torr. Wasn't doing that before. Turbo on now.

2020-08-07 9:24am pumping over night, vacuum at 8e-7torr. Everything ready for test. Ramping up target heater.Up to 50A 1A/20s

2020-08-07 1:15pm Open circuit, would seem that one of the heating elements cracked. Cooling down the target.

2020-08-11 10:16am The pressure is 1e-6Torr. Leak checked performed, water on no problem. Starting to set target heating curve. 1A/10s up to 300A 

2020-08-11 11:23am target at 300A-1200degC Temperatures on exposed foil show to be higher than expected. 300degC already, 70degC on covered by foil thermocouple. Putting 50 more amps at 1A/10s 

2020-08-11 12:11pm target at 350A-1340degC. 350degC on exposed thermocouple. Ramping to 400A 1A/10s.

2020-08-11 12:28pm target at 400A-1420degC. 400degC on exposed thermocouple. Ramping to 450A 1A/10s.

 Short oven loaded with additional hardware are spacers into the flex-line HS.

A Ta short tube was wrapped with 3 tantalum foils,

a tantalum cap was inserted in both sides of the Ta tube, the caps weren't sealed.

The tube was set in the EVAP2

450 graphite foils coated with graphite slurry were loaded in a tantalum tube, the tantalum tube was wrapped with 3 Ta heat shields and installed in the EVAP, to measure the temperature, a pack of 4 Ta foils were inserted in each side of the tube.
