The HP-SIS SiC target was made on Nov 03, 2010.  The target consists of 405 discs, 18.5cm in length.  It was sintered in the Evaporator#1.

This target is going into Evap#2 for re-conditioning.  It is currently being pumped down.

Friday, May 18, 2012, 12:19

The target is wrapped with only one heat shield.

Evaporator #2 Target Heater is now auto-ramping at 0.5 A/min, up to 820 A, with the maximum voltage limited at 2 V, between 2.00e-05 (Good vacuum) and 3.00e-05 Torr (Bad vacuum). Tube Heater is auto-ramping at 0.5 A/min, up to 230 A, with the maximum voltage limited at 1 V. See attachments.

 Friday, May 18, 2012, 13:15

Increased TBHT voltage to 5V, and TGHT to 15V.  Currently, TBHT =83A, 0.986V, TGHT= 144A, 1.65V, IGP1 = 5.2e-7 Torr, IGP2 = 4.3e-7 Torr.

Continue ramping up...

 Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 12:02

TGHT and TBHT were ramped up to 830A/13.65V (local), and 235A/3.85V, respectively.  The target was conditioned over the long weekend.

 Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 12:13

Initiating the cool-down process at 5 A/min.

See archive plots of the Target Heater (Attachment 1) and the Tube Heater (Attachment 2).

 Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 15:24

TGHT/TBHT were ramped down to 0A.  The target has cooled for about 45 min.  All pumps and chillers are off.  The chamber has been vented.

 Monday, June 11, 2012, 12:20

After the re-conditioning, the target's end-caps vaporized.  This is something happened before (see elog entries below):

https://elog.triumf.ca/TIS/Evaporator_1/20

https://elog.triumf.ca/TIS/Evaporator_1/22

The caps were removed and yellow crystals were observed. (see attachment#1).

The D-caps will be inserted in both ends and will be re-conditioned again to see if the yellow crystals can be removed at high temperature.

Monday, July 30, 2012, 15:38

The evaporator was used for the processing the NiO target for 8 days and it was discovered today that there was a puddle of water underneath the chiller.

The cover of the chiller was removed and some water around the plumbing was found (see attachment #1).

Will continue to keep running the chiller to see if there is more water leaking out...

Entry  Friday, November 01, 2013, 17:20, Anders Mjos, , , , Problems, Backing pump needs new filter

The source of the poor vacuum in the backing line seems to be related to a dirty filter. We will try to find a replacement filter next week.

The problem seem to have started September 17th, when backing preassure CG1A went from 40 mTorr to 130 mTorr. CG1B remained around 30 mTorr.

A new target boat was sprayed with TaC coating and let dry this morning.

The target boat is NOT wrapped with Ta-heat shield.

The boat was installed in Evap#2, chamber is currently being pumped down overnight.

 Tuesday, January 21, 2014, 11:10

Chamber was pumped down to ~2e-7 Torr. HS cooling water valves were opened, no leaks detected.

TGHT was stepped up to 35A, voltage max set at 13V. TBHT currently @ 0A.

Waited ~20min, current stabilized, vacuum started to drop, auto-ramp initiated at 2.0A/min and max setpoint to 700A.

Good vacuum: 3.00e-5 Torr, Bad vacuum 4.00e-5 Torr.

 Tuesday, January 21, 2014, 11:51

Vacuum was grumpy and was well on it's way to tripping off [reached 5e-5 Torr], auto ramping was stopped at ~95A and quickly stepped down to 90A to avoid tripping it off.

Allowed vacuum to settle back down to 2.3e-6 Torr. Auto ramping changed to 0.2A/min and re-started.

 close-call!

 Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 09:46

TGHT has been slowly ramping up overnight at a rate of 0.2A/min.

IGP1 = 2.9e-7 Torr, TGHT = 342A; stepping ramping rate up to 2.0A/min.

 Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 13:43

TGHT is sitting at 693A, IGP1 = 1.3e-6 Torr.

Stepping up TGHT voltage up to 14V from 13.05V to reach the max current of 700A.

 Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 15:09

TGHT reached to 700A/12.83V.  Local temperature on the boat surface was measured at ~1500C.

Target will be heated for a few hours and will be cooled down later tonight.

The chamber will be vented tomorrow and the boat will be inspected.

 Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 18:09

After the boat was heated for ~4hrs, TGHT tripped off on IEVAP2:TBHT2 (see attachment #1, #2).

Tried clearing the water interlock via EPICS - failed to clear.  Checked the local water valves - ALL VALVES are OPEN

Tried closing and re-opening the IEVAP2:TBHT2 valves, interlock cleared after a few minutes.

Maybe a fault in the water signal.  If it happens again, the water signal should be replaced.

Turned back on the power supply - TGHT current/voltage are holding.  Target boat may be OK!

Chamber is a bit warm now.  Will allow time to cool down.

Will vent the chamber tomorrow and the boat will be inspected.

The target container end-caps were sintered previously, but did not fully complete the sintering process [See elog entry # 119 EVAP2]

The caps are inserted in the target boat wrapped in graphite foils with 3 x Ta-heat shields.

The chamber was pumped down overnight.

IGP1 = 2e-7 Torr

HS cooling water valves were opened; no leaks detected.

TGHT was stepped up to 35A, voltage max set at 9.05V. TBHT currently at 0A.

 Friday, March 07, 2014, 11:52

Waited ~20min, current stabilized, vacuum started to drop, auto-ramp initiated at 0.5A/min and max setpoint to 500A.

Will ramp to 500A due to last failed round of end caps breaking with 3-ta heat shields at 580A.

Good vacuum: 3.00e-5 Torr; Bad vacuum: 4.00e-5 Torr.

 Friday, March 07, 2014, 13:21

IGP1 = 8e-7 Torr.

TGHT = 72A

Vacuum stable; therefore, increasing ramping rate up to 1.0A/min

 Friday, March 07, 2014, 14:20

IGP1 = 9.8e-7 Torr

TGHT = 130A

Vacuum stable; therefore, increasing ramping rate up to 2.0A/min

Friday, March 07, 2014, 22:22

Target current was at 500A before it tripped off on the chiller.   Tried to reset the chiller but to no avail.  Don't know what is going on yet.

The TGHT/TBHT cooling water is still on, and this should OK while the HOT target boat is cooling down at the moment.

Will leave it for now and further investigate on Monday

Re-initiating auto-ramp at 2.0A/min with a final setpoint of 580A.

New final desired temperature min of 1900C

 Tuesday, July 14, 2015, 13:16

TGHT = 577A, 10.74V

OMEGA = 1938C

IGP1 = 3.2e-6 Torr

Endcaps have been at this temperature for just over an hour.

Spikes in vacuum started ~430A - this is due to the green TaC coating reacting with the Ta foil, the carbide is reacting directly with the Ta foil [see picture]

Stopping sintering early before endcaps break -> initiating auto-cool at 2.0A/min.

 Wednesday, July 15, 2015, 11:33

Vented in air and took out this morning.

Endcaps sintered on top side but not fully sintered on inner edge.

Inner edge is peeling off and unsintered green TaC.

The coating peeling off did not shrink, as seen with previous tests done, one would expect a shrinkage in the coating when heated.

The peeling is most likely due to the way to endcaps were placed  in the slots of the Ta foil.

This may have cause the foil to be hotter than the inside of the endcaps and subsequently the Ta foil and TaC coating on the inside reacted - with the Ta foil extracting the carbide from the coating.

This would cause the outer edges of the inside of the endcap to peel/curl inwards as it was heated [like a cast, as the cast dries the outer edges curl inwards].

See photos attached for clarification.

Endcaps will be re-coated and sintered again via a different procedure.

Target container contains 471 discs of SiC [6 x 5 packs + 441 single discs]

Target packed length = 16cm.

Mass of 533 discs SiC(green)  = 52.7172g

Conditioning temp = 1800C.

TGHT max = 450A.  TBHT max = 230A.

Chamber is currently being pumped down.

Target was not removed from evap2 after sintering, vented and cleaned windows only.

IGP1 = 5.5e-6 Torr

Stepped up manually to 80A, vacuum stable.

IGP1 = 3.2e-6 Torr

Initiating auto-ramp at 0.2A/min for the TGHT and 0.1A/min for the TBHT.

 Thursday, August 11, 2016, 14:14

Tues the TGHT reached ~280A via auto-ramp

Evap2 was then tapped up manually to 480A/ ~1800C

Temperature readings on OMEGA have fluctuated up and down during conditioning process which was also observed for SiC#33

Also consistent with SiC#33, a lower current was required to reach 1800C during the conditioning process compared to the sintering process.

A better look at the p/s voltage over the course of the constant heating at 480A.  (see attachment).

The striptool shows the voltage was not giving a stable output.  There were multiple occasions that the voltage dropped and then recovered; the obvious was on Aug 16.  This indicates that  the target was breaking up.

Finally on Aug 17, the voltage dropped and never recovered again - that indicates the target was broken.

Evap2 was cooled down and opened up this morning.

Turns out both legs on the target boat were touching the new heatshield and therefore had been loosing power.

Normally a boat at 500A would read ~1800C, in this scenario at 500A the boat read ~1000C.

A lot of power was being lost into the heatshield.

See photos attached of target boat sitting at 500A.

The heatshield is currently being ground down in those two spots to accommodate the target boat.

TGHT had remained at 500A for 16hrs, vacuum had initially come down nicely.

Vacuum was starting to creep up when i came in this morning before 8am,  IGP1 was at 1.2e-5 Torr

TGHT = 500A, 7.77V

OMEGA = 1440C

Around 8:30 vacuum started to spike, so the TGHT was tapped down rapidly to 450A

Tapping the TGHT down made no difference to the vacuum.

By the time 450A was hit, it was too late and the spike in vacuum caused the evaporator to trip off.

Turbo pump in epics showed on, turbo pump showed on according to TP direct controls.

Everything was shut off and the venting tapped, this made it obvious the turbo pump was already off as there was no ramping down noises from the turbo pump.

TP control box turned off then on again, at this point the controls showed a 'fail' message.

Turns out the turbo pump control box was fried and that's what had caused the turbo pump to fail with no notice in epics causing the vacuum to spontaneously spike.

Waiting on a new one from vacuum group...

See photos attached of striptool screenshots.

 Wednesday, May 03, 2017, 15:03

New TP control boxed installed.

Turbo pump turned on, everything pumped down.

Vacuum good, IGP1 = 6.92e-7 Torr.

IGP2 still not working, won't turn on via epics.

Tried unplugging and plugging back in...still appears red with 'fail' message...

TGHT tripped off due to bad IEVAP2:WFB1 water flow.  Not sure what was the cause.  Will leave the heater off for now and investigate this tomorrow.

 Friday, July 14, 2017, 11:48

Investigated the bad water flow situation.  It was due to a faulty water flow sensor.  The paddle wheel stopped turning until I gave it a tab.  We had a similar problem before with the water sensor, see elog ID 109.  It is probably the time to replace all the water sensors.

Turned on BV and TP this afternoon.

Started ramping down, ~1min after turned on both tripped off.

Vacuum box turned red.

IGP1 appears yellow but still registering a vacuum.

TP interlocks: requires IEVAP2:IGP1 < 500mTorr but IGP1 = 6mTorr when tripped off.

Should have been satisfied and therefore not tripped but IGP1 not communicating?

Nothing wrong with ion gauge in person, vacuum good on direct read out.

When attempting 'Global Reset', nothing would reset - vacuum box remained red etc.

See screenshot attached of errors.

 Tuesday, August 01, 2017, 15:31

Had kept BP, PV and RV overnight.

This morning vacuum fine, everything had reset except "IEVAP2:TP on" under device notes for IEVAP2:TP remained red.

Turned on BV and TP, once turbo pump registered on, red wording went away.

Currently pumping down - everything looks fine now.

Still unsure of reason for these errors...

Happened again last night at ~5:45 while evaps at ~420A - see elog i.d. 383 for photos and details.

Pellets previously pressed by Marla and Pauline.

Pellets are placed inside a small graphite container.

Graphite container loaded with 5 pellets was loaded into Ta-boat previously coated with TaC.

Ta-boat is wrapped with 3 Ta heat shields.

Loaded in evaporator 2.

Chamber pumping down.

 Wednesday, August 02, 2017, 16:03

HS water valves were opened, no leaks were detected.

Current was tapped manually to 40 A.

After the stabilization of the vacuum auto ramping was set up to 0.5 A/min.

Up to a final set up point of 300 A.

Final desired temperature ~1700 C.

 Friday, August 04, 2017, 10:20

evap2 tripped twice yesterday.

1st trip) there was a power bump which caused a trip at ~4:20pm, this can be seen in the striptool image attached.

-TGHT spiked to zero, but immediately went back to the ~420A it was sitting at at the time.

-This did not initiate a full trip of everything, but a visual spike in the system can be seen

-Oddly this was not picked up in archives - happened so fast and must have been in the small time frame it was not picking up information

-Did TGHT actually drop to zero followed by then applying an immediate 420A?

-Or did it simple not register a reading due to power bump?

2nd trip) IGP1 stopped communicating at ~5:45pm, this can be seen in both the archives, striptool and evap2 control screenshot images attached

-IGP1 was fine, vacuum was good

-Registering good vacuum in epics - can see in screen shot vacuum was still good but IGP1 turned yellow as if turned off

-This resulted in TP followed by BV tripping off due to no longer getting a vacuum reading making the TP think there was a bad vacuum.

-Possible miscommunication with PLC?

-This is the same scenario that happened on mon - see elog i.d. 381

Will follow up when more information acquired...

Each endcap is wrapped in a separate piece of graphite foil and placed in a target boat.

There are also 4 coated springs, 2 on each side of the stack of endcaps.

The boat is wrapped with 3-layers of Ta heatshields.

Chamber pumped down overnight.

OMEGA slope = 0.98

HS water valves opened, no leaks detected.

IGP1 = 5.9e-7 Torr

IGP2 = 4.0e-7 Torr

Tapping up manually.

Final desired temperature = 1800C

TGHT tripped off.

Turns out the vacuum limits have not been fully updated when they should have been and the old ones still apply.

IGP1 reached 8e-5 Torr which tripped off the system.

TGHT = 80A, 1.05V when the system tripped.

Container is coated with TaC and wrapped with Ta heat-shield ( 3 layers)

Desired temp = 1900 C (expected TGHT ~445A/7.5V), TBHT will be set fixed at 230A (max).

Good vac at 3.00-5 Torr

Bad vac at 5.0e-5 Torr.

Chamber is currently being pumped down

 Wednesday, September 05, 2018, 10:53

Pressure at 9.5-7 Torr.

Auto ramping TGHT at 1A/min to reach 400A, and TBHT at 1A/min to reach 230A.

 Wednesday, September 05, 2018, 17:52

Problem with TGHT readback vs setpoint.  TGHT ramped up to 400A, temp measured at 1830C.  However, the setup remained at 228A (see attachment).  The autoramping program only sees the readback; in this case, the TGHT would continue to keep ramping up until the target breaks.  The autoramping program has stopped just in time.

TGHT stepped down to 400A (setpoint), readback at 206A/6.59V.  TGHT at 230A/4.16V.  Temperature holding at 1783C.

Control has been informed.

 Thursday, September 06, 2018, 10:54

Target temp holding at 1773C.  Pressure at 8.5e-7 Torr.

Ramping down TGHT and TBHT, and inspect the container later.

Problem with the TGHT readback/setpoint will need to be investigated.

 Friday, September 07, 2018, 16:03

Target container is nicely sintered.

Awaiting for Control group to investigate with the problem on TGHT readback/setpoint.

Rick mentioned to me that the evaporator is ready for the next steps of the commissioning process.
In the chamber only the target leg heaters have current by-pass clamps on them.
The ionizer tube heaters do not have them because these lines do not have the same configuration as the others. The current by-pass clamps will
not fit these lines.

We may not need this for the commissioning, Rick will design and manufacture something for this when I get back from holiday.

The water is on in all circuits except for the power supply cooling circuit.
