The target container end caps were coated with TaC spray and let dry.

The caps are inserted in the target boat vertically, wrapped in graphite foil with 3 x Ta-heat shield. [see attached photo]

The chamber is currently being pumped down.

HS water valve opened; no leaks detected.

Pressure @ 2.5e-6 Torr.

Ramping up TGHT to 580A @ 1A/min.

 Thursday, August 07, 2014, 08:11

Yesterday the target boat was taken out.

The boat broke as it turns out it was used for a Niobium target and therefore wasn't coated with TaC.

The end caps were fully sintered.

It was found that after the last process, Evap#2 has broken insulators - the cylinder insulator that supports the target centre legs and the block insulator that supports the terminals.

  • Insulators replaced. Torque 55 in lbs on all fasteners.
  • Cleaned TGHT terminals with scotch-brite and methanol.
  •  New (clean) heat shield prepared WO-39230-2.
  • Re-installed right side heat shield alignment pin (previously removed to allow line of sight to the target).

Target boat consists of 5 Nb discs.  Each disc is wrapped with Nb foil, and to be heated to 1400C for 4 hours.

Chamber has been pumped down to 6.5e-7 Torr.  HS valves open - no leaks detected.

TGHT has ramped to 330A to maintain the 1400C temperature.

At 21:30, the target will be cooled down.

Entry  Tuesday, November 04, 2014, 16:20, John Wong, SiC, , TARGET BOAT, In progress, TEST: Fabrication of SiC & Determine phase transformation 3C vs 6H

Tuesday, November 04, 2014, 16:08

The purpose of this experiment is to improve the fabrication of SiC.  Previously, the SiC target was heated to 2000c and yellow crystals were observed.

In this experiment, 10g of SiC powder (7um size) was previously milled down (actual size to be determined under SEM).  The powder was mixed with 5% PVA and the slurry was pour onto a glass and let dry.  The semi-dry slurry was rolled up into balls. The SiC balls were let dry in over (115C) over night. Taken out 2.903g SiC + 5% PVA, it's rolled up with a small sheet of graphite foil.  Then the targer boat is filled with the sample and wrapped with 3-layers of Ta-heat shield.

The sample will be heated up to 2000C to see if the yellow crystals are reproducible.  It is suspected that there might be a phase transformation from 6H alpha-SiC to 3C beta-SiC.

Chamber is currently being pumped down...

Wednesday, November 05, 2014, 14:04

TGHT was ramped up over night, currently at 485A = 1800 C.

Will do manual step up to get to 2000C.

 Wednesday, November 26, 2014, 13:47

OMEGA-IR laser had a dark patch on it [see picture]

Cleaned window, still dark patch

When tested by itself, through air, not through window, patch still visible - cleaned lens of OMEGA-IR, still no change.

Conclusion: assuming laser used to be able to focus the OMEGA-IR to a specific area - so visual only, but the measurements itself will not be affected.

Wednesday, November 26, 2014, 13:53

Backing pump trips off every time roughing valve turned on through epics.

Requested further investigation...

Friday, November 28, 2014, 12:09

Backing Pump has been replaced, waiting on a reply from OMEGA re: dark patch on laser

Pancake monitor was also acting funny. Background was reading 100cpm and jumping up to as high as 400cpm by simply moving the probe piece.

The wire connecting the probe to the monitor was replaced and works fine now.

 Tuesday, December 09, 2014, 15:55

Finally got a reply from the OMEGA people:

"That [ dark patch] would happen because of sharp bends in the fiber, or simply defective fiber cable.

As manufacturer we allow 2% of broken fibers, out of 870 in the bundle.

As far as measurements is concerned, if IR2 is used in dual colour mode,

the field of view can be obstructed as much as 50%,

without changing the readings accuracy. This laser issure should not affect readings."

Chamber is currently pumped down and the target heater will be ramped up after the long weekend (Tue)

A new window port is installed (see photo).  TGHT will need to be ramped up slowly to make sure the new window can sustain the heat shine from the target - local check on the Evap is required to make sure it's safe to keep ramping up the heater.

The endcaps are stacked together with a punched out disc of graphite foil placed in between each endcap for separation so endcaps won't fuse together.

The end caps are further wrapped in a larger piece of graphite foil to hold together as a tube [same method used in elogID # 158]

There are two separate tubes in the target boat:

1) endcaps coated with TaC coating - never been sintered

2) previously sintered [but not fully] endcaps with a second coating done on the one side of each endcap

The boat is wrapped with 3-layers of Ta heatshields.

 Tuesday, August 11, 2015, 09:23

Vented in air and opened up this morning.

The following observations were noted:

1) single round sintered endcaps:

-Batch of green endcaps, single round of sintering look good. fully sintered.

-however when applying a scratch test, excess TaC scrapes off.

[see single round sintering photos]

2) Re-sintering of batch from july 14th
-Outside of endcap [concave side] was re-coated, Inside of endcap had good first coating - therefore no second coating applied [see photos from elog ID#230]

-A few endcaps almost heated too long and started to appear brittle/ further crystallization on inside of endcap - the side that did not have a second coating applied.

-Outside of endcap looks good/ fully sintered - the side that had a second round of TaC coating

-further tests confirm this batch should still be okay to use

[see round2 batch photos]
