 Fri Apr 8 14:56:21 2011:  TGHT @ 20A/0.079V, panel reads 18V.   Vac @ 2.73e-6 Torr.

Fri Apr 8 14:57:42 2011: TGHT @ 40A/0.165V, panel reads 18A.  Vac @ 2.73e-6 Torr.

Mon Apr 18 18:10:53 2011:

FEBIAD-HP target (w.o 38295-8) is coated with TaC (previously prepared on Feb 15, 2011).  This target will be used for the SiC run in Oct, 2011.  The target is wrapped with 3 Ta-heat shields and is in the evaporator.  Pumping down of the evaporator is in process, currently vac @ 3.66e-5 Torr.

Tue Apr 19 11:00:36 2011: Evaporator has been pumped down over night (~17hrs).  Vac is currently at 1.84e-6 Torr (See Attachment#1: pumping down curve).

Tue Apr 19 11:09:49 2011: TGHT @ 30A/0.086V, Vac @ 1.82e-6 Torr.

Tue Apr 19 11:13:05 2011: TGHT @ 60A/0.184V, Vac @ 1.75e-6 Torr.

Tue Apr 19 11:14:06 2011: Auto-heating will begin @ 0.5A/min until vacuum is stable then the auto ramping rate will increase. (See Attachment#2: parameter setup).

Tue Apr 19 14:27:08 2011:  TGHT is currently at 148A/0.65V, vac @ 1.92e-5 Torr.  The pressure spiked up to 7.7e-5 Torr (trip @ 8e-5 Torr) at ~124A.  The current was lowered down to 120A to allow the pressure to come down (See Attachment#3: Vac_curve).   Auto-heating rate has changed to 1A/min.

Wed Apr 20 10:08:52 2011:  TGHT reached to 700A and stayed for about 5 hours.  ISAC Ops helped to start the auto cooling down process.  (See Attachment#3: Overall Process).

Tue Apr 26 11:12:36 2011

Result:  The dried coating isn't looking the same like the rest of the target.  Typically, the finished coating looks gray.  But a layer (or line) of light brown coating can been seen from one end of the target to the other end.

--> This target was heated up to 700A.  Will try to re-heat this again to 820A.

Re-heating the Target

Tue Apr 26 12:44:30 2011:  Target is wrapped with 3 Ta-heat shield and is in the evaporator which is currently being pumped down.

Tue Apr 26 17:39:40 2011:  TGHT was tapped up to 70A before began with auto-heating @ 2A/min to 820A max.  Currently TGHT at 204A/1.0V, Vac @ 3.97e-6 Torr.  ISAC Ops will help to start auto cooling at 04:00 on April 27.

Wed Apr 27 12:26:41 2011: Auto cooling completed.  P/S off and evaporator is vented, (See Attachment#5: Overall Process_2).  Target oven looks good; finished surface looks gray, as expected.

Wed May 18 13:12:24 2011:  Target is wrapped with 3 Ta-heat shields and is installed in the evaporator which is being pumped down.

Wed May 18 23:11:42 2011:  TGHT was raised to 40A and held for about 6 hours; Vac gradually came down to 2.1e-6 Torr.  TGHT increased to 90A and pressure is going up, currently vac @ 2.9 e-5 Torr.  Auto heating will begin soon at 0.5A/min --> 820A.

Thu May 19 10:23:34 2011:  TGHT at 92A/0.32V, vac @ 4.47 e-5 torr.  (See Attachment#1: heating_past_12hrs)

Tue May 24 10:22:59 2011:  TGHT reached to max currrent 820A and held for over the long weekend.  The cooling process began at 15:00 yesterday.  Evaporator is vented.  P/S off.

Mon May 30 17:03:01 2011

The end caps of the target after the sintering process were found damage; the caps were vaporized just like the previous SiC target w.o#38481-8.  (See attachments#2: SiC000-003).  After some investigation, it looks like some reaction had occurred when the target heater was ramped up beyond 550A.  (See Attachment#3: SiC_striptool).

The yellow solid will be analyzed using EDX/SEM.  More details will be posted later....

Wednesday, September 14, 2011, 10:16

SEM/EDX were done.  See attachment #9 for the EDX results.

The formation of the yellow solid is the condensation of silicon.  As seen on the EDX results, the solid is mainly Si, C and some trace of Al (could be from the loading rod).

The new D-end cap has be used to allow a better out-gassing.

Rod from controls checked on the system, seems that the controls are not the cause of the trip

Rod suggested that the power supply might be overheating,

thermocouples were installed on the surface of the power supply to register the temperature during the process

Tapping the current up again at accelerated rate see spread sheet for details.

Since pressure was not decreasing the current was increased to 595 A (rate 1A/min) [see figure CT-2]

The power supply's maximum temperature was 32.7 C which is a difference of 9.7 degrees with respect to the initial temperature.

The target will remain at maximum temperature overnight.

Transferring  UCx to glove box

Mass = 48.384 g

Entry  Tuesday, April 19, 2016, 10:48, Laura Lambert, UC2, ***, , Done, ***ALL FUTURE UCx TARGETS***

 Tuesday, April 19, 2016, 09:47

Temperature measurements have been taken in evap2 on target containers.

Previously all UCx targets have been conditioned in evap1 at 520A. The respective target containers TaC coating was sintered in evap2 at a different current.

All future UCx targets will now be conditioned in evap1 at the same current required to reach 1900C in evap2 when sintering the TaC coating on the container to be used for the respective target.

ie. If a container is being sintered in evap2 at 450A [1900C], this same container is used for UCx - then that specific UCx target will be conditioned in evap1 at 450A.

Confirm full carbonization has been achieved by following with the vacuum on the strip tool and make sure the final vacuum comes down at the end of the whole process.

According to Jonathan Aoki, the electricians will be servicing another MCC which will result in loss of cooling water for about 8 hours starting at 16:00 March 30.  We shouldn't be running the evaporator or any condensers at that time.

Entry  Tuesday, March 29, 2011, 10:30, , , , , Done, Loss of cooling water update

It's the NON-ACTIVE water that will go off.  The evaporator is on sity water, so it will be OK.

Entry  Tuesday, May 17, 2011, 16:43, John Wong, , , , Maintenance, Evaporator Ion gauge replaced

The evaporator ion gauge filament burnt out on May 11, 2011.  A target was in the evaporator at that time and was about to being the sintering process.  The gauge had two filaments, so vacuum group helped to switch to the second filament.  The evaporator was vented on May 17, 2011, and a new ion gauge with two filaments was installed.  The gauge was tested and it's working fine.
