Luca Egoriti | UC2 | | P2N-SIS | Done | P2N carbothermal reduction P2NC220408 | Wednesday, May 04, 2022, 09:42
Yesterday, a second graphite cartridge was installed in EVAP1, it consists of the old, 3-body cartridge design, and was sanded on the outside to be able to fit a P2N container.
First I tried ramping manually, but the heating tripped because pressure was too high.
Then the parameters were set as previously, but it tripped again
IGP1= 2e-5 Torr
Good vacuum 8e-2 Torr
Bad vacuum 5e-1 Torr
Autoramp set to 1A/10s to 500A
Autoramped up to 700A @ 1A/10s.
Wednesday, May 04, 2022, 11:40
Another ramping trial, with different heating rate:
IGP1= 3e-5 Torr
Good vacuum 8e-2 Torr
Bad vacuum 5e-1 Torr
Autoramp set to 1A/20s to 700A
Autoramped up to 700A @ 1A/20s.
Wednesday, May 04, 2022, 15:50
IGP1= 3e-2 Torr
Good vacuum 8e-2 Torr
Bad vacuum 5e-1 Torr
Autoramp set to 1A/20s to 730A
Autoramped up to 720A @ 1A/20s.
Pressure dropping while current is increasing at autoramp rate.
Wednesday, May 04, 2022, 16:10
From 730A, once the pressure went down to ~1E-3T, the current was suddenly raised to 750A and 770A to see if significant pressure increase was noticed, but small bumps reaching 1.5E-3T were not considered a sign of further reduction.
The rampdown started from a pressure ~1E-3T, from 770A to zero with rate 2A/10s

John Wong | ThO2 | 40282-2 | TARGET BOAT | Done | Test: Sintering ThO2 with Nb backing foils | Friday, July 04, 2014, 10:13
Target boat contains 4 set of samples. Each sample consists of 5pack ThO2/Nb. (see photos).
The container is wrapped with 3 layers of heat shield.
TGHT will be ramped up to 520A at 0.1A/min.
Chamber has been pumped over night, pressure at 4.20e-6 Torr.
The purpose of this test:
1. Will the Ta- target boat survive at that current?
2. How will ThO2 sintered? Shrinkage? Grain-growth? mass loss? density? SEM will be done later.
3. How will the pressure behave at the max operating temperature (or current)?
Friday, July 04, 2014, 12:29
Stepped up TGHT to 40A, Vac went to max at 3.5e-5 Torr and is coming down.
Auto-ramping initiated.
Tuesday, August 19, 2014, 10:20
Sample was successfully sinterred to 520A.
SEM on raw, treated powder, and sintered samples were perform. Pressure vs current plot can also be found. (see attachments)

Target container consists of 240 discs of ThO2/Nb discs. The container is not required to be wrapped with Ta-heat shields.
One end cap is inserted on the left end (wrt to the ionizer pointing into the page).
The chamber is currently being pumped down.
TGHT will be heated up to 520A, ramping rate at 0.1A/min.
Friday, August 15, 2014, 15:55
A sampling filter has been installed by RPG; this will be used to analyze any volatile particle releases out from the target.
An alpha monitor is being install on the exhaust line; air sample will be collected for further analyzse.
Vacuum has come down to 7.2 e-6 Torr.
Target heat will be ramped up on Monday since it is coming late to the day.
Chamber will continue to pump down.
Next week, RPG will start taking the first air sample before the target is heated up. More discussion on that later...
Monday, August 18, 2014, 11:18
Chamber has been pumped down over the weekend.
Pressure @ 2.67e-6 Torr.
Note: RPG decides not to take any gas sample since the filter installed in between the backing and turbo pumps is sufficient for the analysis.
TGHT stepped up to 30A.
Monday, August 18, 2014, 14:17
TGHT stepped up further to 40A; Pressure stabalized >100min at 4e-6 Torr, bp @ 44mTorr.
Initiated auto-ramping.
Thursday, August 21, 2014, 17:20
TGHT continues to ramp up and pressure is coming down - Currently @ 7.7-6 Torr.
Increased TGHT ramping rate to 0.5A/min.
The sintering process will be complete by Friday (Aug 8, 21), and the chamber will be cooled down over the weekend.
By Monday, the chamber can be vented in air, and the target can be removed from the chamber. Then RPG can remove the filter in the backing pump for the analysis.
Friday, August 22, 2014, 08:57
TGHT has reached to 520A for just over 10 hrs. Vac at 8.6e-6 Torr, BP @ 40mTorr.
Cooling initiated at 2A/min
Friday, August 22, 2014, 16:52

Luca Egoriti | Ta | | | In progress | IPF release tests | Wednesday, November 24, 2021, 10:38
A first, short "FullTa1" target was loaded into the evap1. It consists of a short container (10 cm) with lateral thickness of ~0.2mm. The ends of the target connect with the TGHT terminals through two copper adapters.
After pumpdown down to ~4E-5 T, the TGHT was ramped gradually to 200 A in the next ~5 mins, leaving the target at 200 A for about 10 mins. Then, the current was increased fastly to 450 A in about 30 seconds, and was left at 450 A for a minute.
Note: the one minute at 450 A started when the TGHT voltage drop across stabilized, considered a sign of temperature homogeneity across the target container
Wednesday, November 24, 2021, 14:34
The second short container "FullTa2" target has been loaded and heated, following the same procedure as above. In this case, the initial pumpdown went to a lower pressure (1.5E-5 T instead of ~4E-5 T) resulting in lower pressure throughout the whole procedure

John Wong | SiC | 38481-8 | HP-FEBIAD | Problems | Organics burnoff & Sintering | Wed May 11 16:20:21 2011: The HP-FEBIAD (w.o#38481-8) was filled with SiC (8.5mm, 555 discs). The target is wrapped with 3 Ta-heat shields and is in the evaporator, which is being pumped down.
Thu May 12 10:52:48 2011: The evaporator ion gauge, IEVAPIG1 filament burnt out. The gauge comes in two filaments, so it is now running on the second one. The chamber has been pumped down overnight, currently it's @ 2.29e-6 torr.
Thu May 12 11:15:59 2011: TGHT was stepped up to 80A, vac @ 2.47e-6 Torr. Begin auto heating at 1A/min to 820A and will increase the rate to 2A/min if the vacuum is stable.
Thu May 12 12:27:35 2011: TGHT went up to 101A, and the vacuum started to reach close to the trip limit (8.7e-6 Torr). TGHT was auto ramped down but the vacuum kept rising and tripped off the heater @ 94A. TGHT was turned back on after 30mins, vac @ 8.7e-6 Torr. TGHT was tapped up slowly to 95A. The ramping rate has also decreased to 0.5A/min. (See attachment#1: high_vacuum)
Thu May 12 12:58:51 2011: Lowered TGHT to 90A. Vac stayed at 7.8e-5 Torr.
Fri May 13 15:47:42 2011: TGHT @ 128A, incrementing rate @ 1A/min, Vac @ 5.4e-5 Torr after 30 hrs. (See Attachment#2: current_pressure_30hrs)
Fri May 13 16:22:54 2011: THGT and vacuum over the past 12 hrs. (See Attachment#3: current_pressure_past12hrs)
Mon May 16 11:03:54 2011: THGT reached to 820A and held for over 12 hrs. (See Attachment#4_Sintering process).
Tue May 17 16:26:34 2011
Problem Occurred:
- The end caps of the target got vaporized after the sintering process. (See Attachment#5: end_caps_vaporized)
- The caps were not coated with TaC and a D-shaped graphite foil were used.
Solutions:
- The caps were removed - No damage to the target oven. (See Attachment#6/#7: left_end/ right_end )
- New caps were used and coated with TaC. Two circled-graphite foils were used on the both ends and then sealed with the TaC coated caps. (See Attachment 8: TaC_coated_endcaps)
- Re-heating the target to 820A.
Tue May 17 16:35:13 2011: Target is wrapped with 3 Ta-heat shields. The target is in the evaporator which is being pumped down.
Tue May 17 19:34:55 2011: TGHT stepped up to 80A, Vac holding at 5.2e-6 Torr. Auto heating began after 25 mins later. Rate set at 2A/min to max 820A.
Tue May 17 22:02:36 2011: TGHT @ 382A, Vac @ 1.23 e-5 Torr. Increased ramping rate @ 3A/min. Cooling down process will begin at 04:00 of May18, 2011; ISAC Ops will help to start the auto cooling process.
Wed May 18 11:39:47 2011: The cooling down process ended; TGHT reached to zero. The camber will be vented.

Thu May 19 10:23:34 2011: TGHT at 92A/0.32V, vac @ 4.47 e-5 torr. (See Attachment#1: heating_past_12hrs)
Tue May 24 10:22:59 2011: TGHT reached to max currrent 820A and held for over the long weekend. The cooling process began at 15:00 yesterday. Evaporator is vented. P/S off.
Mon May 30 17:03:01 2011
The end caps of the target after the sintering process were found damage; the caps were vaporized just like the previous SiC target w.o#38481-8. (See attachments#2: SiC000-003). After some investigation, it looks like some reaction had occurred when the target heater was ramped up beyond 550A. (See Attachment#3: SiC_striptool).
The yellow solid will be analyzed using EDX/SEM. More details will be posted later....
Wednesday, September 14, 2011, 10:16
SEM/EDX were done. See attachment #9 for the EDX results.
The formation of the yellow solid is the condensation of silicon. As seen on the EDX results, the solid is mainly Si, C and some trace of Al (could be from the loading rod).
The new D-end cap has be used to allow a better out-gassing.

Tot mass= 31.95g (SiC + C foil + Org)
Tot length packed @ 8.2cm
Target was installed in the chamber yesterday and has been pumped down to low 10e-6 torr.
Increased TGHT to 70A and vacuum is starting to rise, currently at 2.6e-6 Torr.
Max target current = 820A or until there is no further reaction.
Tuesday, May 08, 2012, 08:55
Pressue is slowly coming down after heating for a while at 70A.
Initiated auto heating at 0.5A/min. Parameter set for increasing current if <4.0e-5 torr, and backing off if >5.0e-5 torr.
Wednesday, May 09, 2012, 10:31
There seems to be a pipe leakage in the ISAC-I B2 level, and the cooling water for the evaporator #1 is connected to the pipe.
The TGHT was tapped down from 115A, and the p/s was turned off. The water valve is now shut, and Curtis B. is looking into it.
Wednesday, May 09, 2012, 13:44
As per Curtis, the drainage pipe was leaky, and it has been fixed. The evaporator is now turned back on. TGHT was tabbed up to 115A, and has remained at that current for an hour. The pressure is slowly raising, current at 4.6e-6 Torr.

Saturday, May 12, 2012, 23:38
TGHT is ramping up very slowly (currently at 270A) due to pressure restriction. It has already taken over 4 days. (see attachment 1: TGHT 0_270A)
Changed the parameter to <5.0e05 Torr for stepping up in current and >6.0e-5 Torr for backing off current.
Sunday, May 13, 2012, 20:44
Pressure has started to come down to 3e-6 Torr. Increased heating rate from 0.5A/min to 1.0A/min.
Monday, May 14, 2012, 01:09
TGHT has reached to 820A and been holding at that current for about 3hr. The pressure is coming down steadily, currently at 1.6e-5 Torr.
Asked ISAC OPS (Ed P.) to initial the auto-cool down at 03:00h, at 2A/min.
The target should be ready by 10:00h.
Monday, May 14, 2012, 10:56
TGHT is now at 0A (see attachment 2). The chamber is now being vented. The target will be inspected.
Thursday, May 17, 2012, 12:51
The target looks good and was tested in the teststand, see https://elog.triumf.ca/TIS/Test-Stand/97
It will be used as SiC#27.

12:28: Target oven is wrapped with 3 Ta-heat shields. Pumping down evaporator
March 29,
12:14 Evaporator has been pumped down over night. Vac @ 1.74e-6 Torr.
12:24 TGHT @ 20A, Vac @ 1.66e-6 Torr.
12:29 TGHT @ 40A, Vac @ 1.56e-6 Torr.
12:30 Auto heating begins, Paramenter Setup: TGHT: 2A/min --> max 820A. Incrementing if Vac < 4.5e-5 Torr; backing off if vac > 6.5e-5 Torr.
18:37 TGHT @ 772A/7.395V (see attachment#1 for the striptool). Auto heating will stop when the TGHT gets to 820A, and the current will stay there over night.
March 30
11:31 TGHT has been at 820A/7.8V for the past 17 hours. (See attachment#2 for the striptool details.)
11:34 Auto-cooling beings
19:40 Auto-cooling has finished. TGHT is at zero and p/s has turned off. Cooling water has stopped running. Evaporator will be vented tomorrow.
March 31, 2011
11:13: Venting evaporator. All pumps are off and TGHT p/s has turned off.
Thu Mar 31 11:57:20 2011 After removing the target from the evaporator, some white coating (could be Tantalum oxide?) was found on the copper plate of the evaporator. The white coating was found to have more on the left end side of the target and some just below the transfer tube. The white coating was wiped off but it showed black residual on the wipers. The target over looks fine. Marik was informed, and we think this white coating could be the organic substance burnt off from the target or the Tantalum oxide from the re-used Ta heat shields.
