The cyclotron operators discovered a water leak in the magnet power supply. The water is valved off and the power is off. A fault report has been issued to the power supplies group.

Entry  Wednesday, March 07, 2012, 13:48, Friedhelm Ames, Nb#6, , , , , , , high voltage conditioning

High voltage conditioning has been started by ISAC ops. Einzel lens is unstable below 5 kV., o.k. above this.

heating target for RFQ tests. Now the wiring is insulated with alumina beats and tubing and the target has the standard Ta alkali element mixture

Unfortunately I deleted some entries, so here a short summary in combination with a screenshot of the striptool

heated to 580A, vacuum increased over time from 4.8 to 5.6E-7T

HV up to 30kV - current of 37 uA - seems fine

Mass scan not possible, ops found a water leak in the magnet PS, optics around the magnet are thereofre also not available and red in EPICS

NOTE: all FC values are in reversed bias!!

source +4.5V, 2nd Rep 0V:  RFQ offs =0V, RFQ Ampl = 20V, 1 MHz (current 0.26A), locked up

 about 2E-9A at FC0

one spark observed

source -5.5V, 2nd Rep 0V:  RFQ offs =0V, RFQ Ampl = 20V, 1 MHz (current 0.26A), locked up

source -12V, 2nd Rep 0V:  RFQ offs =0V, RFQ Ampl = 20V, 1 MHz (current 0.26A), locked up

  about 5E-11A at FC0

  two sparks observed

source -5.5V, 2nd Rep 0V:  RFQ offs =0V, RFQ Ampl = 20V, 1 MHz (current 0.26A), locked up - done again since not sure if the restore of the tune was done properly for this

  about 4E-11A at FC0

done, source +4.5V, 2nd Rep +12V:  RFQ offs =0V, RFQ Ampl = 20V, 1 MHz (current 0.26A), locked up

   about 3E-10A at FC0

 1 spark during HV ramping

done, source +4.5V, 2nd Rep&exit +12V:  RFQ offs =+12V, RFQ Ampl = 20V, 1 MHz (current 0.26A), locked up

there is something visible <~ 2E-12A at FC0

reduced current to 550A and leave it over night.

Short summary:

suppression possible but RFQ has to be shifted, the "only source shift" mode yielded a worse suppression than expected - unfortunately no mass scans have been possible, which would help to get some information on possible effects

Started heating the target, now Silica sleevings are installed for wire insulation and the gap target -- repeller is now 0.6mm (was 0.25mm)

The temperature of the cooling water was logged during this test. See attachments for details. Note that current and voltage read back is not available due to trouble with the power supply. One thermocouple (Heat Shield circuit) came loose before the end of the test (not shown in plot).

The gas system has been checked. The variable valve opens at about 7.55 very fast. Please be careful when using it. Stepsize for opening around this value should be 0.01. Gas lines have been pumped with pump in the high voltage rack. Ne leak was opened to release pressure.

Checked the Archiver and the striptool: TSG:TP1A & TP1B tripped on Oct. 10, at 7:53am. Both pumps showed timeout, but the AC breakers were not tripped. Also, checked with MCR: they were no power bumps or cooling water problems around that time.

Discussed it with Kazuya Negishi from Controls: there were no PLC problems. Kazuya and I would monitor the trips.

The current at the magnet power supply TMS:MB1 shows fluctuations every 1-2 minutes. The same can be seen in the Hall probe read back and in the beam current at Fc6.
