Subject: Re: Cu-LCW water lines status for the ISAC test stand

Hi Fernando,

There are no plans for Cu-LCW system to be switched off today.  I believe they are still working on correcting the issue that caused the trip two days ago.  Once it is corrected and we are ready to switch to the secondary pump, the switch over "should" be relatively invisible with possibly a slight drop in line pressure.

 Thursday, February 11, 2021, 10:31: TGHT/TBHT at 400/200 A. Anode still at 10 V

Thursday, February 11, 2021, 10:33: Auto-ramping TGHT/TBHT to 580/230 A @ 2 A/min

Thursday, February 11, 2021, 10:42: BIAS/EZL/EE @ 30/13/1.5 kV.

Thursday, February 11, 2021, 13:42: Uncapable of holding HV. Maybe the new heatshield needs more time to outgas.

Thursday, February 11, 2021, 13:44: BIAS/EZL/EE @ 0.000 kV

Friday, February 12, 2021, 10:07: In order to trouble shoot the ISAC TS, I  let the sparks to continue. Initially, they occurred in the extraction electrode spark gap and were both visible and audible. However, they stop and the instabilitiy was present.

I rise the voltage again and let the spark happen for a longer period of time.

I saw how the collimator wire on the far back of the source tray was moving as if a hurricane was inside, which is very strange. I followed up the wire and I saw how it was sparking to something (see attached photo)

I say something because from the angle is difficult to say if it was going to the chamber itself or to the HS waterlines. Both scenarios are concerning

First of all the collimator is never biased and it if any case the jacket  (MHV cable) is on ground ground

In case the discharge happened from wire to the chamber, then the collimator wire was charging up, it is extremely important o note that the jacketed cable goes outside the box very close to one of the turbos.

In the other scenario where the discharge was happening from the wire to the HS waterlines, that is, HV to ground, the simply creating a clearance should be enough. In this case as well is relevant to know that this jackted cable leaves the farday cage.

I will create clearance from collimator wire to HS waterlines.

Friday, February 12, 2021, 10:33: BIAS/EZL/EE @ 0.000 kV

Friday, February 12, 2021, 10:35: Auto-cooling TGHT/TBHT to 0 A @ 4A/min.

Friday, February 12, 2021, 11:05: Discharge confirmed visually to go into the HS waterlines, (HV to ground) (see second photo attached)

Friday, February 12, 2021, 11:06: Inside the blue rack,  I could hear ticks that match the discharges, probably  the collimator PS is there. Will check later with things  off.

 Friday, February 12, 2021, 13:17: Turbos off.

 Friday, February 12, 2021, 14:36: Venting.

Monday, February 01, 2021, 08:38 : The anode seems to be shorted but we can still test the  amount of dispersion at the image position, and correlate with energy spread.

Monday, February 01, 2021, 11:27: Bias/EZL/EE @ 30/0/1.5 kV.

Monday, February 01, 2021, 11:44: Mass scan in progress. The peaks appear to be shifted. Large peak at  m/q160 and double peak at m/q 100u, where I think it should be 133Cs and 85Rb and 87Rb.

Monday, February 01, 2021, 14:04: HV turned itself off, nothing tripped nor change. Not sure if related to the emittance scan that I was running. Setting it to zero before restarting it.

Monday, February 01, 2021, 20:14: Ramping things down and call it a day. My laptop charger broke and I don't want to leave the HV on.

Wire scanners look fine but the emittance meter was not working. Keiko soft reboot it but to luck.

Wednesday, February 03, 2021, 07:46: IV4 open

Wednesday, February 03, 2021, 07:48: BIAS / EE / EZL @ 20 / -1.0 / 0 kV to start. will go to 30 & 1.5 kV once the TGHT reaches 350 A.

Wednesday, February 03, 2021, 09:40: Auto-ramping TGHT / TBHT to 580 / 230 A @ 2 A per min.

Wednesday, February 03, 2021, 10:55: BIAS / EE / EZL @ 30 / -1.5 / 0 kV. Lot's of sparks on the initial conditioning from 8:30am until almost 10:20. Appears stable now.

 FM

Wednesday, February 03, 2021, 13:01: Spark. The HV bias voltage remained at 10 kV for several seconds. TSG:CBC was @ 2500 V. Likely, a sustained discharge towards the steerer had the HV bias power supply to get current limited

Wednesday, February 03, 2021, 13:25: HV bias power supply gets current limited as of 15 kV. Setpoints to 0 to allow some discharge. Didn't work. Asking someone on site to have a look on the PS.

No sign whatsoever of a spark  to any device.

Wednesday, February 03, 2021, 18:27: HV has been erratic all day. Waiting for some stabilization allowed the system to reach ~24 kV. Now it has dropped to 20 kV.

Wednesday, February 03, 2021, 18:28: Increasing current limit on the bias PS from 0.015 to 0.02 mA

Wednesday, February 03, 2021, 18:55: Spark in the water lines. Current drop 60% from 0.03 to 0.01 uA. Spark observed in the GND electrode water lines

Wednesday, February 03, 2021, 19:11: Able to reach 28 kV but a spark ocurred.  TSG:CBC adn TSG:Q1 readback 2500 and 1500 V (similarly to the spark at 1 pm). Bias is current limited again, even at the new current limit.

  • I think there might a short with one of the steerers cables, or a bit unlikely, to the quad.
  • Slow charge up process, that does not discharges.

No P2N is loaded. Testing the power supplies.

Tuesday, May 03, 2022, 10:07

In the past few days, the ITS has been reconfigured for P2N operation:

  •  The two ATTS PS were moved to the ITS rack, one on top of the TGHT and the other instead of the COIL
  • AC rewiring was necessary since the breakers were not connected to the wires. Marshall was on it and re-connected
  • Ray has configured the ATTS PLC to be compatible with P2N operation in ITS
  • The controls cables to the MASTER and SLAVE supplies have been configured: the cables come from the front of the PS rack, so we could close the back and top cage if we wanted. One control cable was connected to the relay to send the proper ENABLE signal only when the ITS vacuum and water flow are OK
  • DC cables re-routed for P2N parallel operation:
    MASTER+ = D
    MASTER- = C
    SLAVE+ = E,G
    SLAVE- = F,H
    TBHT+ = A
    TBHT- = B
