1307 Friday, August 05, 2016, 14:13 Isaac EarleNorth Hot-CellDevelopment Preparations for NHC Ventilation Test

A hole was drilled in the NHC exhaust duct in the east end of the target hall above the hatch to the Ante Room. This will be used for measuring NHC exhaust flow rate with a thermal anemometer. The hole was tapped and plugged with an NPT tap.

Flow was measured in the existing hole in the SHC exhaust duct in approximately the same location. Flow velocity was measured to be 1415 ft/min with the lid on the SHC. Using duct ID 7.75", and assuming the average flow velocity is 90% of the flow at duct center, the flow rate was found to be 417cfm. We will attempt to match this figure for the NHC when the ventilation tests are performed. The tests have been scheduled for the maintenance day on Tuesday August 9th.

The anemometer probe and SHC test port plug were checked for contamination: none found.

1294 Friday, July 29, 2016, 14:27 Isaac EarleNorth Hot-CellDevelopment North Hot Cell Measurements & Cleanup

The North Hot Cell was accessed today via the Ante Room for inspection, measurements, and clean-up. There were no modules in the SHC or TCS, and no spent targets in the SHC. Under these conditions the maximum field in the NHC was approximately 2μSv/hr. The inside of the cell was cleaned and swept, followed by a floor swipe to check for contamination (none found). All areas of the ante room floor were also swiped: no contamination found.

The following measurements were taken in the NHC for comparison with the Soldiworks model:

SHC/NHC feedthrough panel fastener size: 1/4"-20, 1/2" long
NHC west wall to east edge of SEG block: 33-1/4" on south side, 33" on north side
NHC west wall to furthest extent of TCS (IRH1170): 40"
NHC west wall to wall indentation for viewing window: 46-7/8"
NHC west wall to end of existing ventilation duct: 4-1/8"

1292 Tuesday, July 26, 2016, 11:22 chad fisherSouth Hot-CellMaintenance Soth Hot Cell Waste Storage Vault Tunnel

The two 45 gal (m) drums of waste removed from the south hot cell in December 2015 and January 2016 were transferred from the north hot cell to the shaft of the east vault tunnel on Monday, July 25th 2016 and subsequently to the east tunnel bunker in the vault tunnel on Tuesday, July 26th, 2016.The first drum (removed from the hot cell in December) containing both activated and contaminated metals was measured at 900 uSv/hr @ .5 m and the second drum (removed from the hot cell in January 2016) containing compressible items such as tank suits and plastic was measured at 150 uSv/hr @ .5 m.

Items were filed for storage/disposal with RPG under item number 1395 on the radioactive storage form.

Drums were transported to the vault tunnel using the 500 Mev Shield Flask (Drawing E-7097) with some minor modifications, namely a 1/4" thick Aluminum plate with four holes that line up with the holes in the bottom flange of the flask. This plate provided a bottom for the flask so that a drum could be contained within the flask during craning. Holes in the plate where countersunk for a 1/2" flat head bolt. Four bolts were also modified to accept 3/16 hair pins. 3 plates with clearances holes for the bolts were also manufactured to act as washers.

Procedure was as follows: With plate, washers and pins installed onto the flask, a modified drum dolly (5" spacers added to the casters) was placed inside the flask. Drum was craned into the flask using the automatic drum lifter. Flask with drum loaded was moved to the Meson Hall loading bay then craned to the B2 level of the Meson hall. Hair pins were pulled from the flask and the flask was then craned up leaving the drum (which was on the dolly firstly installed into the flask) and the plate. Drum on dolly was rolled to vault access shaft where it was craned off the modified dolly using the automatic drum lifter and down the access shaft to the vault tunnel level. A second drum dolly was waiting at the bottom level and drum lowered onto it. Procedure was repeated for the second drum

Was vault was open , drums were wheeled into the vault tunnel and into a bunker that had been modified to accept these drums. Drums were lifted off dollies and put in place in bunker which had blocks installed to cover the entrance provided for installation.

Last Friday July-15, TM3 was leak checked at TCS. All air to vacuum seals on service cap are good. Helium pressure test on TM3 water lines(except GE, HS, and Window) were done. Leak detector has no response at 0.0xE-9 atm.cc/sec. They are leak free.

Friday July 15: did HV tests (with no target installed and with the anode wire removed ).
TM3 went up to 22.5kV. At this voltage it started sparking. The EL was kept at 1/2 with respect to the HV BIAS.
Also HV tests were done while the EL was kept at zero V. In this case, the EL voltage was once in a while spiking up (up to 4kV).
During sparking we saw responses in the vacuum. Checked the Service Cap (with the HV Cover) in the Target Hall: we couldn't hear/see sparks there.
The HV was turned off in the same day, after 5:30pm.
