chad fisher | North Hot-Cell | Repair | | | Spare Telemanipulator: Y-Motion Linear Actuator Repair |
Adam Newsome wrote: |
The linear actuator used for the Y-motion motor assistance on the spare telemanipulator was replaced and tested. It was observed around September 2021 that the former one which was installed was causing fuses to blow for the main 120 VAC power supply in the control box. After some troubleshooting, it was determined that the linear actuator itself did not operate smoothly - it was suspected that this caused motor overload due to additional friction. This suspicion was confirmed by operating the linear actuator independently with a power supply and measuring current draw. The part has been replaced by Thomson PPA90-58B65-08NXXX. Note: this part took over 1 year to arrive since it was first ordered. The spare telemanipulator is confirmed operational.

During this repair it was noted that the Y-axis electrical translation is locked out when the Z-axis is in the fully retracted position (i.e. the Z-axis limit switch engaged). I have made a note of this in the operator manual (CRLD-1046-B Rev1 ) which can be found in docushare collection 26780 |

chad fisher | North Hot-Cell | Standard Operation | | | NHC fields post sample removal |
The fields in the NHC after removal of Ferran's graphite sample is 238 uSv/h. This again seems to emanate for the items in the 5 gal pail...the copper tubing from the beam window or, as I mentioned in my previous elog, the peek samples. I did ask about removing these during the graphite sample removal but was told they were not "hot". |

chad fisher | North Hot-Cell | Maintenance | | | NHC entry summary |
NHC was entered on April 17, 2023 for inspection and maintenance. Summary :
Compressible and non-compressible waste was loaded into a 55 gal drum and removed from the NHC. This same drum will be inserted into the SHC at a later date to be sorted, compressible waste compressed, and drum filled more.
Manipulator remote end tong cables checked. Tong cables didn't show any wear but both east and west had tong cables had hopped off the third highest pulley (see detailed write up . This was fixed by tying the tongs in the closed position to provide slack in the cables then inserting a t-handle through the wrist and offering the cables back onto the pulleys. Cable hopping is most likely due to aggressive ratcheting and releasing of the tong during operation.
Manipulator booting flanges were removed from both manipulators as it was previously found that the booting interferes with access to the inside of the containment box so it could not be used. Flanges were remove to provide even more clearance.
Containment box cover removal arm - linkage fasteners were removed one at a time and blue locktite added then reassembled and tightened appropriately to allow arm to swing freely (see detailed write up) . Lack of locktite during initial assembly was allowing fasteners that pass through bushings into the linkage arms to loosen over time/cycling.
Exhaust pre-filter changed.
Target insertion jig - The target insertion jig was rumored to had a missing fastener. A loose nut was found that appeared to belong to it but after much inspection a location for it could not be found...i.e. all parts appeared to be counted for. During this inspection it was noted that some over the fasteners in the main hinge were loose. Again these were removed one at a time, blue locktite added and fasteners tightened to allow proper movement (see detailed write up).
Window inspected for leak. No sign of any leakage from the "hot" side.

chad fisher | South Hot-Cell | Maintenance | | | Manipulator tong cable and wrist replacement |
Broken tong cable on SW manipulator (serial #8106) of SHC was replaced today.
Following ISAC Hot Cell entry procedure, Document 157554, SHC was entered and wrist and tong cable were replaced with a pre-run/assembled wrist, cable and tong. It is standard to try and pre-make/load a new cable into a spare tong assembly to reduce time spent in the HC. This marks the first time a wrist has been replaced. Rationale for replacing the wrist at this time is that internal spacer A-14118 which the ting cable rides over has had grooves worn into it. This is a result of regular wear and tear but could be causing premature wear on the tong cable. Replacement is a preventative measure. This is the original wrist and spacer from the original install in 1998. The wrist that was removed will be rebuilt and swapped out with the original one on the SE manipulator (serial #7986) at a later date.
Parts replaced today are: New - Bottom half of wrist joint (CRL-13950), New - Tong cable (CRL-14230) and used tong assembly (CRL-18062)
Procedure took about 40 minutes. Dose received was ~0.046 uSv |

chad fisher | South Hot-Cell | Repair | TM4 | UCx#43 | Plating and coating from UCx#43 failure |
TM4 has seen significant coating of the main standoff insulators and various other components stemming from failure in UCx#43 target. See attached pictures showing coating on containment box, support frame, main standoff insulators, standoff insulators high voltage shield etc. Note tracking marks on main standoff insulators.
Wednesday, January 24, 2024, 12:54 Carla's edit:
Meggered all HV components relative to HV common and HV common relative to ground. Nothing out of the ordinary, HV common to gnd was 700MOhms at 1kV. Seems whatever got onto the insulators is non-conductive, or is not as bad as it seems. |
