  247   Friday, February 22, 2013, 13:13 Bevan MossConditioning StationDevelopmentTM4CS Test Target #1Broken Turbo Pump

Today while putting the cover on the cord that goes to the controller was bumped. This bent the connector down and caused a vacuum leak. I tried to tighten the bolts in the hope the leak would go away but it did not and I sheared one of the bolts off. David is inquiring with Edi if the pump can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced. The good news is that the interlocks work exactly as planned. Upon detecting a leak they shut the turbos down and closed all of the valves they even beat the turbo controllers for overload.

David believes we can rotate the pump slightly to avoid this problem in the future. Hopefully repairs can start on Monday.

The conditioning station will be shut down for the weekend.

Blocks 1-4 have been moved from ITW to ITE. Block 5 was moved to a storage area as it will be in the way of the harp repair. Danka took air samples and found 200 counts of alpha on the air samples but nothing on the swipes. It is recommended that resporators be worn while blocks are being lifted and lowered. She will check the monitor tomorrow to confirm it is behaving as it should.

Anders and I opened the HV cover in ITE and did  a visual check inside ITE HV  cover and top of TM3.Bill was with us and took the pictures. There was nothing obviously wrong when we opened the HV cover in ITE. We disconnected TM3 high current cables from ITE. Then we did an electrical check on TM3.The TM3 was good and passed megga test (465Mohm at 500V). The module was good and was separated electrically from the ITE at that moment. Then, we went back to electrical room and measured the resistance between bias and ground with ground bar opened and power supply disconnect. It was still shorted at that moment .We thought the short is located inside HV chase between electrical room and ITE. Then, we went back to ITE again and reconnected TM3 back to ITE. We wiped two blue nylon insulators between bias and ground, and no obviously spark track or dirty on them. We put HV cover back in ITE locked area, and went back to electrical room again. We decided to do a final electrical check there. We thought the short should be still there and we just want to confirm it . But this time the short  is gone. Everything goes back to normal.   The short disappeared and We test bias to 5KV and the current looks normal now.

A special thanks to Kazuya, Jane and Ray who jumped on this issue right away! The limit of the BIAS PS was set as 20000uA when in reality it is 4000uA. The issue has now been corrected. Please remember to divide the current by 5 for any elogs older than this one.

There is something wrong with the BIAS canbus controller. It says that it is not alive and has timed out. I have tried unplugging it and plugging it back in but that has not resolved the problem as it normally does. I have contacted Dave Morris and am waiting to hear from him. I cannot HV test without this controller.

The crane pendant for the auxiliary hoist was upgraded to a FLEX EX2 style pendant by Canco Cranes. The installation work was performed by Canco, supervised by Tom Kauss and David Wang. Installation work was performed in one day (I2021-03-26-1).

Items installed include: new pendant (2 motion, 2 speed)

The existing antenna and receiver box located in the Target Hall were used.

The new system was tested by David Wang. Everything is reported to be in working condition.

2636   Tuesday, July 09, 2024, 16:14 Carla BabcockITERepair  Attempts to reduce ITE:EL trips from HV sparks

ITE:EL has been tripping off due to HV sparks. Usually this also trips ITE:Q1/2. These are sitting in side-by-side racks.

The working theory is that HV sparks are returning to ground through the EL and quads, tripping them off. Possibly this is the result of a changed low impedance ground path. How this change happened could be either something we did during shutdown or the changes we made in TM3, no clear evidence yet.

The goal of these changes is to stop the EL and quads from tripping, assuming the sparks are travelling through the ground.

Possible routes through ground to the EL power supply:

  1. Through controls. EL is controlled by a canbus card. Preliminary investigations by Mike Rowe make it look like the canbus reads the PSU max voltage (60kV), then the staton bit trips, then after a while of trying to talk to the power supply, the statdrv is turned off. It is not clear why the power supply is turning itself off, since it doesn't seem to have a trip or protection circuit inside. To be further investigated.
  2. Through the AC ground.
  3. Through the shield on the output voltage conductor that runs to the pit.
  4. Through the EL wire and conductor itself.

Current attempts to mitigate the tripping:

  • Add an isolation step to the AC power, in case it is coming through AC ground (option #2).
  • Add ferrites on the controls lines (option #1, this was done earlier and no effect has been seen).
  • Add transient voltage suppresors on the Vmon, Imon, Vprog and Iprog control cables (option #1).
  • Replace grounding cable with a grounding strip where the grounding wire used to be on ITE:EL. The ground wire was a braid, so probably not too bad, so not sure if this will help.
  • Improve the connection between the two grounding bars in the racks. The grounding bar for th EL supply is well connected to the copper ground strip from ITE, but only connected through a small cable to the grounding bar for the quads. A copper foil sheet was added between them and the previously used wire was disconnected on the quad side bar..

  1939   Monday, June 10, 2019, 18:12 Carla BabcockConditioning StationMaintenanceTM4No targetAttempt to push bias > 56kV

Monday, June 10, 2019, 16:59 : TM4 back up to BIAS / EL = 56.1kV / 29.5kV

Monday, June 10, 2019, 17:14 : After 57kV on the bias, things seem to be getting sketchy. The EL voltage and current are a bit jumpy and stepping that voltage up seems to produce a slight spike in the bias current.

Monday, June 10, 2019, 17:31 : At BIAS / EL = 58 / 30.3, looks ok.

Monday, June 10, 2019, 18:11 : Sitting at 59.5kV, could probably push further but will sit here for ~30mins and make sure it is relatively stable. Note 59.5kV set point is really 56.9kV on readout.

Monday, June 10, 2019, 18:18 : some current inconsistencies (not really sparks probably corona discharges...) so went down to 59kV

Monday, June 10, 2019, 18:23 : still getting some sparks at 58kV, going down to 57.5.

Monday, June 10, 2019, 18:37 : went back up to 58, spent 10 mins there but was getting these corona-discharge-type-sparks where the vacuum responds and current is drawn but voltage is maintained. Went down to 57kV, still getting them....

Monday, June 10, 2019, 18:40 : Going down to 56 to see if they stop....

Monday, June 10, 2019, 18:42 : Trying 55 kV now... see attached screenshot for example of sparks

Monday, June 10, 2019, 18:48 : No luck at 55 or 54kV. Going down to BIAS / EL = 50 / 27 for a while to see if this resolves

Monday, June 10, 2019, 19:20 : 30 mins at 50kV, a couple little sparks, but no big deal. Ramping up to 55 and let's see if it is ok.

Monday, June 10, 2019, 19:30 : 55 still not working, going down to 54

Monday, June 10, 2019, 20:16 : Held bias at 54kV for about an hour - dropped it down once to alleviate some sparking. Leaving it at 50kV overnight, ops have instructions to keep an eye on it and shut it off if anything seems strange.
