Stepped up TGHT to 390A/6.54V; light coating was observed on the windows. The temperature should be around 1800C which should be in line with the power (current) deposited in the container during the TaC coat sintering process (1900A at 420A); however, with the light coating the reading may be off.
Mikron was used to measured inside of the tube (away from the discs); temperature was measured at ~1800C, (see attachment) [adjusted slope at 1.00 to compensate the SiC disc and Ta]
Omega was used to measured the temperature of the discs. It is difficult to know what's the temperature inside the tube, so this measurement is only taken as a guideline. Slope changed from 1.04 to 1.15 to match Mikron's reading.
After heated at 390A for 30 mins, the windows are now coated. Temp reading is no longer reliable. The temperature could be above 1800C. Keeping a close monitor!!!
No blockage inside the tube was observed.
Will remain heating at 390A/6.44V for overnight before proceeding with the re-conditioning.

TGHT/TBHT stepped up to 340A (5.40V) /230A (3.1V), respectively.
Temperature was measured at 1835C at TGHT of 340A. Omega, Mikron and analogue pyrometer were all reading ~1800C inside the tube (not on the SiC surface). For that reason, I decided to stop the current at 340A, instead of 390A.
TGHT voltage is running stable.
No visible coating or blockage inside the tube was observed.

A thin layer of coating is observed on both the side windows (see attachment 5). The temp reading is no longer reliable.
TGHT remains at 340A/5.45V. P/S voltage is performing steadily.
No clogging inside the tube is observed.
Setting up another Omega reader to measure temperature from the front window since this window is clear and won't get coated (see attachment #6).
Temperature measurement from the front window is ~1140C; this corresponds to the measurement from the analogue pyrometer with the correction of e=~0.2 for tantalum at 1100C.
Note: The temperature measurements should be taken as relative. Since the reading from the side windows isn't reliable any longer, the centre window will give some information how stable the temperature is holding during the reconditioning process. Continue to monitor.

About two hours ago, I increased TGHT to 350A and stayed there for a few mins (see attachment 7). No change in temp was observed - that's mainly due to the coating on the windows. As for the temp measurement from the center window, a more power current input would require to see the change as heat is slowly propagating through the layers of Ta heatshields.
Local inspection on the target: no clogging inside the tube. Voltage/Current is stable at 340A/5.45V. Vac at 1.43e-7 Torr.

Strange observation: Temperature readers on both omega have gone up. (see attachment 8).
I'm not sure if the temperature is reiiable. I actually saw the increase in temperature ~1850C last night around the same time; no change in TGHT current/voltage. By the next morning, it went back down to 1400C with significant coating on the windows.

I had ISAC Op (Justin) to help me go into the Hotlab and take a look at the reading on Mikron. Indeed, it is reading about 2000C which is close to the Omega reading. He also looked into the tube through Mikron scope and found no clogging inside the tube.
To be safe, I am going to lower the TGHT heater down to reach ~1800C.

A better look at the p/s voltage over the course of the constant heating at 480A. (see attachment).
The striptool shows the voltage was not giving a stable output. There were multiple occasions that the voltage dropped and then recovered; the obvious was on Aug 16. This indicates that the target was breaking up.
Finally on Aug 17, the voltage dropped and never recovered again - that indicates the target was broken. |

Total mass w/ Target oven= 434 g (w/ end caps)
Discs in target are arranged as follows: 1pack / 75 singles / 1pack / 100 singles / 2packs / 100 singles / 1pack / 75 singles / 1pack
Dimpling direction on foils/ Packs. --> Center <--
End caps installed (Not expanded). No Ta foil heat shield added
Final desired temperature = 1900C.

Final Current TBHT= 230 A
Final TGHT current= ~400A (adjustable)
Heating autoramp starged at 1A/min on TGHT 100A and TBHT
Then at 1A/min to =400 A TGHT and 230A TBHT
Good vacuum = 5.0 e-04 Torr
Bad vacuum = 5.0E-02 Torr
note: Left TBHT hole is off from center by a good margin

have ramped ;up at 1A/min on both TGHT and TBHT but had two issues.
1) Set current and readback current have discrepancies but the TBHT discrepancy is significant (TBHT Set at 188 while RD is 231.9 A @ 1.9V)
TGHT also has odd behavior with set point 405 giving 392A RD and 0.067V. Will hold until 430pm before starting ramp down

After troubleshooting EVAP2 it was found that a copper line was touching the metal encasement grid most likely resulting in a short. A short was seeing and it disappeared after moving the copper line away from the grid.
Upon restarting on epics the PS went to maximum current and it was shut off after 30seconds to a minute. The system was checked again by Arthur and TGHT was manually increased to 5A and then set to Zero again. Arthur thinks that the PS probably requires this step after switching from local controls to remote. Will start the sintering again as the container is coated but not sintered.

It's wrapped with 3 layers of Ta as the heat-shield, including the backblock.
TGHT will be ramped up to 580A at 0.2A/min.
TBHT will be ramped up to 230A at 0.2A/min.
Currently, IGP1 = 1.5e-6 Torr. BP = 15mTorr

TGHT was ramped up to 580A yesterday and left overnight.
In the picture attached one can see the TGHT current has remained constant at 578A [red = TGHT current, green = TGHT voltage]
The vacuum has slowly gone down as expected.
However, the DV, TGHT voltage and temperature have deviated. They have dipped up and down several times throughout the night. The first deviation was observed ~3.5hours after it reached its target of 580A.
DV reached 6.02V [when TGHT initially hit 580A] and increased to 6.27V after 3.5hrs and is currently sitting at 5.94V
OMEGA reached 2111C [when TGHT initially hit 580A] and increased to 2154C after 3.5 hrs and is currently sitting at 2094C
TGHT voltage reached 10.4V [when TGHT initially hit 580A] and increased to 10.6V after 3.5hrs and is currently sitting at 10.3V
