  20   Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 17:06 John Wong   Problems resolvedTBHT power supply faulty

 Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 17:03

The tube heater power supply current readback and setpoint are not matching.  Ray Dube checked the power supply and confirmed that it is faulty.  He will replace a functional p/s tomorrow.

 Friday, May 18, 2012, 13:24

The original p/s was replaced with a new one and there was still a discrepancy between the readback and the setpoint.  After checking with the drawings for the ITE/ITW tube heaters, it was confirmed that the connections for the Evap#2 tube heater control were wrong.  (see attachment 1).  The connections were corrected and the power supply is now operational.

A new target boat was sprayed with TaC coating and let dry this morning.

The target boat is NOT wrapped with Ta-heat shield.

The boat was installed in Evap#2, chamber is currently being pumped down overnight.

 Tuesday, January 21, 2014, 11:10

Chamber was pumped down to ~2e-7 Torr. HS cooling water valves were opened, no leaks detected.

TGHT was stepped up to 35A, voltage max set at 13V. TBHT currently @ 0A.

Waited ~20min, current stabilized, vacuum started to drop, auto-ramp initiated at 2.0A/min and max setpoint to 700A.

Good vacuum: 3.00e-5 Torr, Bad vacuum 4.00e-5 Torr.

 Tuesday, January 21, 2014, 11:51

Vacuum was grumpy and was well on it's way to tripping off [reached 5e-5 Torr], auto ramping was stopped at ~95A and quickly stepped down to 90A to avoid tripping it off.

Allowed vacuum to settle back down to 2.3e-6 Torr. Auto ramping changed to 0.2A/min and re-started.

 close-call!

 Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 09:46

TGHT has been slowly ramping up overnight at a rate of 0.2A/min.

IGP1 = 2.9e-7 Torr, TGHT = 342A; stepping ramping rate up to 2.0A/min.

 Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 13:43

TGHT is sitting at 693A, IGP1 = 1.3e-6 Torr.

Stepping up TGHT voltage up to 14V from 13.05V to reach the max current of 700A.

 Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 15:09

TGHT reached to 700A/12.83V.  Local temperature on the boat surface was measured at ~1500C.

Target will be heated for a few hours and will be cooled down later tonight.

The chamber will be vented tomorrow and the boat will be inspected.

 Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 18:09

After the boat was heated for ~4hrs, TGHT tripped off on IEVAP2:TBHT2 (see attachment #1, #2).

Tried clearing the water interlock via EPICS - failed to clear.  Checked the local water valves - ALL VALVES are OPEN

Tried closing and re-opening the IEVAP2:TBHT2 valves, interlock cleared after a few minutes.

Maybe a fault in the water signal.  If it happens again, the water signal should be replaced.

Turned back on the power supply - TGHT current/voltage are holding.  Target boat may be OK!

Chamber is a bit warm now.  Will allow time to cool down.

Will vent the chamber tomorrow and the boat will be inspected.

 Thursday, January 23, 2014, 16:18

Chamber vented overnight and was opened up this morning.

Target boat not fully sintered [see attached photos].

Chamber currently being pumped down again in order to continue with sintering TaC coating.

HS cooling water valves were opened, no leaks detected.

Will ramp up to 700A again over the weekend.

  124   Monday, March 10, 2014, 11:52 John Wong   Problems resolvedThe Chiller is down

Monday, March 10, 2014, 11:45

The chiller tripped off on March 7, 2014.

  • Water is not flowing into the chiller; paddle wheel shows no signal.
  • Tried turning on the chiller locally; a few seconds later, it tripped off.
  • Motor is not responding;
  • EPICS is not responding;
  • All other water flow signals to TGHT, TBHT, HS, are responding;

Continue investigating...

 Monday, March 10, 2014, 14:36

The water line to the chiller is disconnected, and is re-connected straight to the TGHT power supply.  The paddle wheel is responding - the cooling line in the power supply is not blocked.

It is confirmed the chiller is broken.

Will discuss if we can use the Evaporator without a chiller but with the DI water connected directly to the TGHT power supply....

Friday, March 14, 2014, 14:50

The chiller was replaced with a "new" one.

Checked the chiller interlock - It's working.

The evaporator is now operational.

 Friday, March 21, 2014, 16:19

Note about Auto-ramping program.

Previously the auto-rampiong program takes the Chiller as part of the reference to the interlocks.  Because the New chiller is not connected to EPICS; all the references to the Chiller on the auto-ramping program has been removed in order for it to function.

 Thursday, February 09, 2017, 10:52

Evap2 was cooled down and opened up this morning.

Turns out both legs on the target boat were touching the new heatshield and therefore had been loosing power.

Normally a boat at 500A would read ~1800C, in this scenario at 500A the boat read ~1000C.

A lot of power was being lost into the heatshield.

See photos attached of target boat sitting at 500A.

The heatshield is currently being ground down in those two spots to accommodate the target boat.

Heatshield was ground back and target boat now fits nicely into heatshield without contact.

TGHT had remained at 500A for 16hrs, vacuum had initially come down nicely.

Vacuum was starting to creep up when i came in this morning before 8am,  IGP1 was at 1.2e-5 Torr

TGHT = 500A, 7.77V

OMEGA = 1440C

Around 8:30 vacuum started to spike, so the TGHT was tapped down rapidly to 450A

Tapping the TGHT down made no difference to the vacuum.

By the time 450A was hit, it was too late and the spike in vacuum caused the evaporator to trip off.

Turbo pump in epics showed on, turbo pump showed on according to TP direct controls.

Everything was shut off and the venting tapped, this made it obvious the turbo pump was already off as there was no ramping down noises from the turbo pump.

TP control box turned off then on again, at this point the controls showed a 'fail' message.

Turns out the turbo pump control box was fried and that's what had caused the turbo pump to fail with no notice in epics causing the vacuum to spontaneously spike.

Waiting on a new one from vacuum group...

See photos attached of striptool screenshots.

 Wednesday, May 03, 2017, 15:03

New TP control boxed installed.

Turbo pump turned on, everything pumped down.

Vacuum good, IGP1 = 6.92e-7 Torr.

IGP2 still not working, won't turn on via epics.

Tried unplugging and plugging back in...still appears red with 'fail' message...

 Wednesday, May 03, 2017, 16:07

Unplugging and plugging back in seemed to work now that evap2 under vacuum

IGP2 works again.

Will look into replacement ion gauge...

  472   Tuesday, November 26, 2019, 15:43 Anders MjosSiC42464-3HP-FEBIADProblems resolvedWater to vacuum leak on heat shield line

This morning, the vacuum responded to shutting of the water of the heat shield circuit (leak rate without pumping leveling out). The vacuum chamber was vented and the heat shield with flexible lines was replaced with another heat shield with fixed lines. The chamber was again pumped down and water opened at ~150 mTorr to test the leak up rate without pumping. No leaks apparent, so continued pumping down with turbo pump. At a vacuum of about 1E-6 Torr the water was again supplied to the heat shield circuit and an increase in vacuum could be observed. Stopped the turbo pump and prepared to vent. Two new heat shield lines were brazed in the machine shop and fitted by Maico after lunch. During this time one of the old lines (from heat shield to feedthrough in box) was leak tested and a leak found at a location just above the VCR. The line had been twisted and due to the twist developed a leak. With the two lines replaced, the vacuum was pumped down again and water could be supplied without any increase in vacuum pressure at 1E-6 Torr. To facilitate the new copper tubing, the restraining bracket for the heat shield VCRs was not mounted. It will have to be fitted later. Until then, please contact Anders for help in removing the heat shield to prevent any damage to the new lines.
