Fernando Maldonado | | LP-FEBIAD | | | 41790-10 | 44378-5 | Failed | FEBIAD efficiency measurements | Thursday, July 22, 2021, 17:43: Roughing
New argon gas bottle installed.
Thursday, July 22, 2021, 18:16: Turbos on.
Thursday, July 22, 2021, 18:25: TP1A timed out. TSG:CG1A is larger than TSG:CG1, that is the roughing lines are higher than the vacuum chamber.
Thursday, July 22, 2021, 18:27: Bypassing TSG:BV1 to open it.
Thursday, July 22, 2021, 18:28: Turbo at speed.
Thursday, July 22, 2021, 18:28: Bypass removed.
Thursday, July 22, 2021, 18:28: IG1 on.
Friday, July 23, 2021, 09:16: IG1 @ 1.69e-6 T.
Friday, July 23, 2021, 09:17: Waterlines open. No vacuum response
Friday, July 23, 2021, 10:09: While checking the gas connections I found out that inside the faraday cage there are a couple of connections missing:
Coil PS chasis ground disconnected
Resistor between A and C (tbht pos and tght neg) disconnected.
Friday, July 23, 2021, 15:29: Gas system taken out to properly install a new "tee" union.
Friday, July 23, 2021, 15:29: IG1 @ 1.34e-6 T.
Friday, July 23, 2021, 15:52: Power/ sources on.
Friday, July 23, 2021, 15:54: Auto-ramping TGHT/TBHT to 580 A/ 280 A @ 2A/min
Friday, July 23, 2021, 15:58: IV4 open.
Saturday, July 24, 2021, 13:07: IG1 @ 1.25 e-6 T.
Saturday, July 24, 2021, 18:34: BIAS / EE / EZL @ 30 / -1.5 / 13 kV. One spark when Bias reached 30 kV.
Saturday, July 24, 2021, 18:36: Two consecutive sparks. Lowering to bias 29.5 kV to let it conditioned there for at least 10 minutes.
Saturday, July 24, 2021, 18:46: Bias to 30 kV. No sparks.
Saturday, July 24, 2021, 18:59. No sparks. IG1 @ 1.16e-6
Saturday, July 24, 2021, 19:26: Anode gets current limited as of 2 V. Maybe there is a short somewhere else either inside the vacuum box, or on the service cap. Will check tomorrow
Saturday, July 24, 2021, 19:30: BIAS / EE / EZL @ 0 kV.
Saturday, July 24, 2021, 19:30: Auto-cooling to 0 A @ -2A/min
Monday, July 26, 2021, 09:00: IG1 @ 4.58e-7 T.
Monday, July 26, 2021, 09:17: No visible sparks
Monday, July 26, 2021, 09:22: Power sources off.
Monday, July 26, 2021, 13:20: After some tests I can conclude a couple of things:
- Anode/Cathode voltage power supply works fine and draws the right current for a 100 kOhm resistor.
- When all cables are disconnected from TBHT and TGHT F/Ts there is continuity between them and HV common.
Monday, July 26, 2021, 14:52: IV4 closed
Monday, July 26, 2021, 14:53: Turbos off.
Oops!, forgot to turned off IG1 but interlock did it for me :p
Monday, July 26, 2021, 17:19: After opening the vaccum chamber I found the portion of the capillary that goes to the target was touching the heatshield. Confirmed continuity with a multimeter.
Manually move it away and no continuity confirmed with multimeter.
FTs A-D recconected.
Bypassing anode interlock to check there is no short. Confirmed.
Preparing to close and pump.

The plan for today Thursday, June 25, 2020 is:
- Optimize (tune) the beam to FC0 and then to FC6.
Compensate beam energy by substracting the value of anode voltage to the high voltage. Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:07: FEBIAD is on cathode bias
- Perform an efficiency measurement to know the correct work of the mini pump and also the time needed for 1 measurement.
- Perform at least 3 efficiency measurements of the same configuration as a sanity check on the reproducibility of the measurements.
The system is prone to trip if the build-up pressure for the gas lines is higher than 7e-6T. I will try to wait as long as reasonably possible to make sure the gas lines are pumped to good vacuum levels.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 08:38: TGHT / TBHT @ 580 / 280. Coil @ 0A. Vacuum @ 3.71e-06T. BIAS / EE / EZL @ 30 / -1.5 / 13 kV. Anode @ 100 V.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 10:34: TP6 tripped. Closed IV4 closed and reset it. TP6 on
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 10:41:IV4 open
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 10:54: Optimizing beam to FC0 with current tune.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 12:19: New values for TPS:Q1,Q2,Q3,Q4. Better beam shape on RMP0A and 0B
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 12:33: I think there is something wrong with this FEBIAD as the mass scan does not show any peaks.
I've noticed the word document from Aaron, and he observed peaks likely from surface ionized species. Furthermore there is no anode current readback on epics nor on the power supply.
Possbile culprits. The anode is not well attached to the 9-pin. The cathode temperature is extremely low and there are no electron-impact ionized species.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 12:52: Power supply is on cathode bias mode as well as all the service cap wiring.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 13:03: Back to old tunes. Mass scan still showing only surfaced ionized species.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 14:30: Mass scan for 0V finished. Peaks at 38 and 28 u. 38 is Potassium, but 28 is odd, closest surface ionized species might be Al27 with an ionization potential of about 5.8 eV.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:20 : Mass scan for 100V finished. Peaks still at 38 and 28 but with different intensities. Now there are features what seem to be 18 and 14. Water and N respectively.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:03: Manually tap TBHT to 290 A.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:31: FC6 signal increased. Anode leakage current still showing 0.0 mA.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:35: Manually tap TBHT to 295 A
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:58: Mass scan completed. More peaks showed up.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 15:35: Manually tap TBHT to 300A. Anode leakage current still showing 0.0 mA.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:30: Manually tap TBHT to 305A. Anode leakage current still showing 0.0 mA.
Increasing Anode to 500 V, now there is a reading of 1.2mA. However, there were sparks on the high voltage so this current might be a leakage current from the high voltage.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:34: Lowering to 300A to run a mass scan.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 16:59: Similar mass spectrum, the anode current is meaningless.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:00: Mass 28 will be used for efficiency measurements.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:15: SV3 closed.

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:39: SV1 opened (mini pump)
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:41: Opening and closing SV3 and SV4.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:45: Opening SV5. System tripped.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:51: I will open the cage to see if the mini pump is on.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 17:58: The mini-pump was off and unplug. Now connected and running.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:00: SV1 open.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:10: SV1 closed

Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:17: SV5 open/close/open. Maximum vacuum 6e-6T. This is very closed to the hard-coded interlock. Everything is off, so it will be better to have the vacuum response at least near 4 or 5 e-6T.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:26: SV3 closed.
Thursday, June 25, 2020, 18:31: SV4 closed.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 12:45: SV5 closed. FC6=5.18e-10 and decreasing.
SV5 closes the gas line segment to the ion source. The response on the ion current indicates that once the leakage lines are closed, there is still some gas in the lines causing the slow decrease on ion current.
There is approximately a factor of 2 increase for m=28 when the argon is used.

Friday, June 26, 2020, 17:24: FC6 reading keeps decreasing and it's already below the initial current.
I suspect that the ion current that was read when the coil was changed corresponds to superposition of previously ionized species and the coil adjusted those charges. Once flushed, the neutral atoms will established a new equilibrium.
NOTE: Will setting the anode to 0 V flushed the source? Test it tomorrow.
Friday, June 26, 2020, 17:43: FC6 signal is increasing. I'll leave it as is.
Saturday, June 27, 2020, 11:47: FC6=1.06e-11A. IG1=3.40e-6T. Similar to the value of the current prior to the efficiency measurement.
The plan for today Saturday, June 27, 2020 is:
- Perform an efficiency for coil 20. This might be a long measurement if the value has to increases again. If after 1.5 h the signal still shows a mismatch, then I'll try to flush the source by setting the anode to 0V
- Redo efficiency measurement.
- Try another coil value.

Dave Neilson | | LP-FEBIAD | | | 44692-4 | 42972-10 | | FEBIAD development | Tuesday, December 02, 2024, 15:35 - Target loaded into the test stand
Thursday, December 03, 2024, 14:33 - as per elog entry 1033, test stand has been changed to CATHODE mode, and wiring within the Faraday cage has been altered appropriately. Additionally, a GeMov resistor has been added to potentially reduce the sparking problems that have previously tripped the TGHT power supply
Thursday, December 04, 2024, 10:00 - Roughing pump having trouble reaching suitable vacuum - possible replacement required.
Thursday, December 05, 2024, 13:37 - Turbo pumps on
Monday, December 09, 2024, 09:51 Vacuum at 3e-7 T
Monday, December 09, 2024, 12:10 Water cooling switched on, monitored vacuum. No change to vacuum.
Monday, December 09, 2024, 16:58: TGHT / TBHT ramping to 580A/230A at 1A/30.
Tuesday, December 10, 2024, 11:14 increasing COIL current 10A at a time, monitoring vacuum pressure
Tuesday, December 10, 2024, 18:42 COIL at 100A after allowing pressure to fall to reasonable levels throughout the day. allowing to stabilize for a few hours.
Tuesday, December 10, 2024, 19:00 vacuum plateauing now, awaiting decrease to 1/3 of peak before reducing COIL to zero
Tuesday, December 10, 2024, 19:37 - vacuum at 9.9e-7T. dropping COIL to 0A
Wednesday, December 11, 2024, 10:27 increasing BIAS/EE/EZL to 30/1.5/13 kV
Wednesday, December 11, 2024, 11:30 TGHT TBHT adjusted to 490/290A
Wednesday, December 11, 2024, 13:47 degaussing script not currently available. For now. will examine beam extracted at CAT=120V COIL=40A
Wednesday, December 11, 2024, 14:27 The CATHODE is completely shorted. cannot hold even 1 volt and is currently limited immediately upon switching on cathode bias power supply.
Wednesday, December 11, 2024, 15:02 dropped bias/ee/ezl to 0
Wednesday, December 11, 2024, 15:02 Must cool target to investigate Cathode short. Prior to installation, target isolation was confirmed. If the cathode dropped to contact the copper plate shielding the coil, this would be evidence to support keeping the retainer.
Thursday, December 12, 2024, 09:24 after cooling, cathode power supply was checked to see if shorted and it is indeed still shorted out.
Thursday, December 12, 2024, 09:25 turning off turbo pumps to spin down
Thursday, December 12, 2024, 11:30: venting chamber
Friday December 13: after venting the chamber and removing the target. The target appears to be unshorted and intact. However, upon inspection of the test stand, there appears to be a ~100Ω load between the cathode and ground. This load is able to sustain voltage from the cathode power supply, but draws a significant amount of current. It is too much for operation, and might be further aggravated by the presence of the target. Further, when the TGHT and TBHT terminals are shorted together, the resistance from cathode to ground drops to ~1Ω. Perhaps this could be associated with the installation of the TGHT power supply, as FEBIAD has not been run on this machine since it was installed. Wiring at the feedthroughs as been quadruple checked, I don't believe that the problem lies there.
With no target in place, the cathode was able to hold a voltage, despite drawing 100+mA current. However, I was unable to repeat further tests, as the power supply stopped responding. Despite ramping up to ~10V in epics, the readback is 0V/0A, unlike before.

Dave Neilson | | LP-FEBIAD | | | 44692-4 | 42972-10 | In progress | FEBIAD development | Tuesday, January 07, 2025, 16:00 - Target assembly installed in test stand. electrical connections assessed:
Prior to installation: oven and cathode isolated from heatshield. no shorts
After installation: Oven and Cathode 35kΩ from HVC.
Tuesday, January 07, 2025, 16:05 - pumping down to rough vacuum
Tuesday, January 07, 2025, 16:45 TP1B on. TP1A on. Pumping down
Prior to proceeding, ensure that ALL water cooling is turned on, as it was all drained and empty for the past 2 weeks.
Tuesday, January 07, 2025, 17:10 Beam line TP1 and TP2 on.
Wednesday, January 08, 2025, 09:01 chamber pressure at 1.0E-6 T, beamline pressure at 3.7E-7 T
Wednesday, January 08, 2025, 10:32 - water cooling all on. no effect on vacuum pressure.
Wednesday, January 08, 2025, 10:33 - Increased argon pressure in the gas line has no effect on vacuum pressure. it is registered on the pressure gauge at feedthrough.-
- However, roughing pump doesn't seem to be venting the argon gas line. I disconnected the copper line to the venting valve to confirm pump activity. - no activity detectable.
- removed pump from assembly. switching on by itself shows no evidence of pump functionality. When on, pump is heating to very hot temperatures. I've emailed Edi at vacuum group to investigate further.
Wednesday, January 08, 2025, 15:02 - Vacuum group says that the pump is dead. We can replace it if we'd like, but i've created a temporary solution by connecting the argon venting valve to the backing pumps. For the sake of being careful (although this may be overly cautious), we must avoid opening this venting valve without first isolating the connection from the turbo pumps via closing TSG:PV1
Wednesday, January 08, 2025, 15:04 ramping up COIL to ensure conditioning against outgassing later. vacuum appears to be stabilizing below 2e-6 T
Wednesday, January 08, 2025, 16:32 vacuum recovered, beginning to heat at 1A/30s up to 580A/230A TGHT/TBHT
Wednesday, January 08, 2025, 22:32 with COIL on, the vacuum pressure increased to ~2.2E-6 T before beginning to recover, leaving on to encourage vacuum recovery.
Thursday, January 09, 2025, 08:27 Vacuum at 1.0E-6 T. COIL off.
Thursday, January 09, 2025, 10:15 Argon gas line at 0.5 bar.a
Thursday, January 09, 2025, 10:56 increasing BIAS/EE/EZL to 30/1.5/13 kV
Thursday, January 09, 2025, 11:19 turning on optics elements. TMS:Q2 is timed out and possibly unalive. - must be investigated
Thursday, January 09, 2025, 12:38 HV at 30kV. monitoring for spark activity
Thursday, January 09, 2025, 12:53 over 15 minutes, there was just one possible spark. I see also that TPS:Q2 (quadrupole prior to FC0) seems to be half-down. i can't seem to get it to stop timing out and recharge. must investigate further
after investigating further and attempting to reset/reconfigure. I tried power cycling the canbus controller as well. In the end, controls group determined that this controller needed to be replaced.
Thursday, January 09, 2025, 14:34 all optics set. setting COIL CATHODE to 40A 120V. CATHODE is leaking 0 current. (0.000 mA readback).
Thursday, January 09, 2025, 14:37 reading 2.91e-8A at FC0 . found Argon peak at 40 exactly. MB1 current 96.4561 A
Thursday, January 09, 2025, 14:42 using COIL CATHODE scan program to optimize. (data file measure_id=9106) A local maximum was identified at 140V with 40A coil current. However, a short seems to show up when the cathode voltage reaches ~130V. it lets through only ~10mA at 130 and then will release up to at least 100mA at 140V.
As time passes, the sustained voltage drops over time, given a current limit of 100mA. it dropped to ~50V. On subsequent increases of the power supply, current begins leaking through at ~65V.
Given this, I will continue (while monitoring the cathode power supply) with a cathode coil of 50V 90A.

Anders Mjos | | | | | | | Problems/Solutions | FEBIAD ANODE current readback | The read back of the ANODE current was confirmed to be working today with help of Ray D. using a 1kOhm resistor. There is an offset in the read back which can explain why no current was seen on SiC#30. The resistor between CATHODE and GND was changed from 100 kOhm to 50kOhm. |
