The containment box was taken off TM2 in preparation for installation of a new coil line isolator.

ITA6272 and ITA6273 have been received from the Scintillator Shop.  ITA6274 should be ready by the end of today.

Tuesday, August 11,  insulator ITA6272 was installed onto the "pin x" line (unused plasma electrode) and tested; it seems to have successfully eliminated the shorts on that line.

Wednesday, August 12  "shunts" installed on tube heater and oven circuit and electrically  tested.

Thursday , August 13, dummy target installed.

1045   Friday, August 21, 2015, 11:38 Anders MjosSouth Hot-CellRepairTM2FEBIAD Test TargetSteerer wires found to be touching the gas lines

Yesterday TM2 was inspected in the SHC. Spark marks were found both on the steerer wires and on the ANODE wire. The steerer wires (GND)  were touching the gas lines (60kV). This is likely the cause of the sparking observed at the Conditioning Station (e-log).

Hello all,

TM2's first performance in the Conditioning Station with the new source tray was not great, with sparking and HV degradation beginning to occur at 30kV:
https://elog.triumf.ca/TIS/RH-ISAC/1039

This is perplexing, because the module without the source tray performed well at the TCS:
https://elog.triumf.ca/TIS/RH-ISAC/829

AND the new source tray performed well at the test stand (i.e. not inside the module):
https://elog.triumf.ca/TIS/Test-Stand/447

Upon inspection back at the Hot Cell last week after the failure, David Wang was observant enough to notice that one of the steerer coax wires (ground plane) was essentially touching one of the FEBIAD gas lines (HV plane) in the new source tray installation (photo attached).  Closer inspection by a group consisting of Anders, Alex, and myself revealed some apparent tracking and damage to the wire sheath.
https://elog.triumf.ca/TIS/RH-ISAC/1045

We believed at this point that the bad HV performance of TM2 was due to this problem.  The wires were originally arranged loose as it was believed it would be easier to install them in the Hot Cell this way.  However, it turned out to be a bad decision, as the wires at ground ended up becoming stray and touching the HV surface.

To correct the problem, the old wires were removed, and a new steere wire bundle was made using a PEEK material sheath.  This new sheath bundle was installed over the last day or so.  The penning gauge wire was kept separate from the steerer wire bundle.  You can see the new wire bundle and penning gauge wire in the attached photo, now with a healthy clearance to the FEBIAD gas lines.

Chad has been instructed to re-install the Einzel lens wire, install the new ZrC target, and replace the containment box in preparation for transport back to the TCS for another HV test.  If anybody would like to see the source tray today before ~3pm, I have asked Chad to wait for my final OK to put the containment box back on the module.

I apologize for this problem.  We are hopeful the solution we have installed will improve the HV performance.  Much work over the last 2+ years was put into building and installing this source tray by many contributors inside and outside of Remote Handling, and we want this module to succeed more than anybody!

Thanks and best regards,

Grant

  1065   Thursday, September 10, 2015, 08:55 chad fisherSouth Hot-CellRepairTM1 TM1 Window Leak Diag.

Vacuum leak check on the window line circuit of TM1 took place yesterday and again to confirm this morning. Both days the response to helium is in the area of a soldered reduction fitting at the top of the containment box above and to the shutter side of the extraction column (see attached picture). To verify this morning each joint in the system had a 1 second shot of helium and then timed for 1 minute to wait for a response. This area responded both times tested at about 40 seconds...no response at any of the other locations.

Hot cell was entered for preventative mait. on left manip. field measurements around the cell were taken in prep. for window removal in January and left/south light bulb changed.

Hottest item in the cell was the conductor block end of the TM4 febiad coil line. It was 70 mSv/H on contact and seemed to be the major source of field in the hot cell. The waterblock end of this line did not apper to be hot.

1068   Tuesday, September 15, 2015, 08:24 David WangSouth Hot-CellRepairTM1UCx 13Leak check on TM1 window circuit soldering stems in service cap.

I did a leak check on TM1 window circuit  2 soldering  stems in service cap.The round side panel was opened for the job. I sprayed helium on the stems for 10 seconds. The leak detector got a tiny response(from 0.0xE-9 atm.cc/sec to 2.0xE-9 atm.cc/sec). The test  repeated again. The second time, LD climbed  to 1.2xE-9atm.cc/sec. It looks like there is a very tiny leak on the stems soldering spots. But , this is not the same leak we found from SHC helium spray which LD climbed to 1.4xE-8atm.cc/sec with only one click helium spray by Chad.

Because of the high air flow at SHC when the round panel is removed, The result is not conclusive. The same test is done at silo without  airflow. We found a big leak on this soldering stems . See later e-log.

  1069   Tuesday, September 15, 2015, 11:06 chad fisherSouth Hot-CellRepairTM1 TM1 Window Gasket Replacement

Replaced the custom silver gaskets on the entrance window panel of TM1 this morning...this has eliminated an sign of leak at this joint, however there appears to still be a leak somewhere...a good distance from the vcr joints of the window as we are getting a drift response.

Chad sprayed helium to soldering stems in containment box which we suspected with leak last week. With 1second click  on helium, after 80 seconds waiting time , the LD started to show leak up to 3xe-9atm.cc/sec.

Chad sprayed helium close to service tray and vacuum chase. with 1second click on helium , after 30 seconds waiting time, the LD started to show leak up to 2Xe-8 atm.cc/sec.

After this test, we knew the leak is somewhere in service tray or service cap, but not the soldering stems in containment box we suspected before. The further investigation is needed.
