Copper plate attached to TBHT to allow current to be applied.
Started pumping down this a.m.
Roughing pump sounds normal.
Currently Ion Gauge times out before turning on, will attempt again later when lower vacuum achieved...
Monday, September 25, 2017, 13:30
Ion Gauge hadn't been fully hooked up via eipcs yet.
Ramped down last week/ vented/ hooked up ion gauge in epics/ restarted IOC - now updated and good to go.
Started pumping down again this a.m.
Roughing pump sounds normal.
Ion gauge working well!
IGP1 = 2.7e-5 Torr
Wednesday, September 27, 2017, 09:20
Cooled down, vented in air and opened up yesterday.
TBHT ran well - readout on power supply and readout on striptool were very close.
Roughing pump ran smoothly - nothing other than usual problems.
Sometimes when roughing pump is 1st turned on it chokes up and sounds TERRIBLE. At this point if you turn it off and leave it for a few seconds then try turning it on again it usually works fine.
Ion gauge ran well - direct readout vs striptool readout are slightly off because the direct readout is in mBar and the striptool in Torr.
One minor thing noticed with the new ion gauge - when water is turned on the vacuum increases very minorly by ~5e-8 Torr.
This wouldn't show up with the old Ion Gauge - maybe the new one is slightly more sensitive?
Otherwise everything ran great

Last two rounds of materials in evap1 have tripped off the TGHT in epics within minutes of the target reaching 520A.
Loaded an empty target boat, no heat shields.
Will ramp up with same speed as last two samples to see how TGHT reacts and whether a trip is induced or not.
Currently pumping down now.
Thursday, March 01, 2018, 13:53
IGP1 = 9.6e-7 Torr

The assembly consists of two tantalum foils, 0.001" thick, which are radially crimped to form a cylindrical surface. The outside support are two P2N conditioning legs, and the inside supports are tantalum tapered rings. The solidworks geometry for this test is ITD0811 in PDM.
A first current ramp up to 600 amperes on the bare naked target is attempted to benchmark the current/voltage increase in a bare target, so that we have reference values for future rampings with graphite and target material inside.
Wednesday, January 22, 2020, 18:07
A P2N container with no heat shields, and no graphite container was installed in the EVAP1
Chamber is currently being evacuated.
Thursday, January 23, 2020, 09:45
Pressure IGP1=1.87e-6 Torr
Final desired current TGHT = 600 A
Manually tapped to 40 A
The voltage looks ok, at 32 A the voltage's behavior change (see picture "voltage at 32 A") but is stable
Thursday, January 23, 2020, 13:20
Autoramp is set to 4/30s to 300 A
The voltage and vacuum were stable so the autoramp was kept at 4/30s and the final current was set to 600 A
At 600 A the voltage was 2.4 V, the current and voltage remained stable for 1 hour (see figures 600A and 600A-zoomed)
Thursday, January 23, 2020, 15:57
The current was ramp down to 0 A at -5A/20s
Thursday, January 23, 2020, 16:36
After 10 min at 0A, the current was ramp up to 600 A at 4A/30s.
At 600 A the voltage was 2.43 V (TGHT)
The container was left at 600 A overnight.
Friday, January 24, 2020, 10:51
The PN2 stayed at 600 A for 15 hrs
The voltage increased 0.1 V during the first 7hr at 600 A and then it stabilized at 2.5 V (see figure "second ramp voltage")
Friday, January 24, 2020, 10:57

The voltage and vacuum were stable so the autoramp was kept at 4/30s and the final current was set to 600 A
Accidentally went up to 600 A (1.98 V)!
When updating autoramp to 600 A, did not realize that procedure status was Active.
NOTE: If the procedure status is "active" the heater autoramp, does not "ramp" the current input in "final value", it will go in one step to that current.
The current was manually ramp down to 300 A
TGHT=299.52A, 0.89 V
Wednesday, January 29, 2020, 13:25
After approximately 2 hours conditions IGP1=1.6e-6Torr, TGHT =300 A, 1V.
The current ramp was started again: 4A/30s to final value of 600 A
Wednesday, January 29, 2020, 14:07
After 15 min, TGHT=599.424A, and 1.983 V (unstable) (see figure "P2N-test2_final voltage")
The current was ramp down to 0 A at -5A/20s
EVAP1 was vented with aair and the container was removed,
the copper shims and legs did not present signs of damage
the body's tantalum sheet had wrinkles inside,
the tantalum foils unfasten a bit, but were adjusted. |

Thursday, October 25, 2012, 14:50
Previous sintering BeO tests, pellets 1 to 4 were done in Evaporator#2.
3 BeO pellets were made. Each weights about 1.3g (including org mass).

Another layer of Ta-foil is used as the heat-shield to wrap around the Ta-boat.
The chamber is currently being pumped down.
TGHT will be ramped up to 600A (~1360C) at 0.2A/min.
The pressure, voltage and current will be closely monitored.
If the Ta-boat survives, the TGHT will continue to ramp up to max 800A (~1580C).

The evaporator ion gauge filament burnt out on May 11, 2011. A target was in the evaporator at that time and was about to being the sintering process. The gauge had two filaments, so vacuum group helped to switch to the second filament. The evaporator was vented on May 17, 2011, and a new ion gauge with two filaments was installed. The gauge was tested and it's working fine.

|
Monday, May 14, 2012, 15:04
Due to the differences in the use of the graphite foils in past SiC targets (C-grv foil from Alpha Aesar) and the newly prepared SiC#27 (C-grv foil from Ceramaterial), the out-gassing period for SiC#27 took over 6 days compared to 3 days for the vacuum to come down (see https://elog.triumf.ca/TIS/Evaporator_1/47).
A few pieces of the new graphite foil is loaded on the target boat to test the out gassing reaction.
The Evap #1 chamber has been pumped down to low 10e-5.
Set to same parameter, see attachment#1
Initiated auto heating...
Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 14:46
The target heater was ramped up to 820A. There was so much out gassing as the temperature was increased. The voltage did not hold at that current and the target heater was tripped off after the midnight. (see attachment #2)
After the chamber was vented, it was discovered that the target boat's legs were bent due to over heating. Both end of the targets where they touched the base got vaporized. The boat was also got squeezed. (see attachment #3).
However, the heated graphite foils (~1600C at 820A) looks pretty good. As per the supplier, CeraMaterials, the graphite was treated to 2000C. See attachment #4 for the certificate.
