Accelerator development continues. Save: 101201_2157.snaiosvault. Today's agenda: emittance scans. Attached: overnight beam plus a preliminary horizontal emittance scan 101202_0951ILTEMIT.txt.

Later... First good scan 101202_1016ILTEMIT.txt.

Next... Second scan 101202_1016ILTEMIT.txt with FC at lower gain, due to lots of red in the first scan. Too noisy.

Next... Third scan 101202_1041ILTEMIT.txt, first the raw pic, then filtered a couple of ways.

Scanner parked, and beam on FC6 again. There is interest in doing a vertical scan. This will require physically moving the emittance rig to the perpendicular face of its diagnostics box. Awaiting decision.

Last day of 85Rb delivery. Save: 101124_1400_snapiostitan. Next up: 12C2+ for SEBT commissioning. We took a few minutes earlier to see if this is available with the source as-is. No such luck. Plan is to shut off mid-afternoon, and prepare to switch over to 12C2+ operation from the MWS.

  366   Tue Nov 23 10:31:27 2010 Damien Gallop  85Rb for TITAN

We are back to running a Rb beam using the MWS. The run started last Thursday, November 18th. The previous Rb run ended on Monday, November 8th, at which point a 12C2+ beam was established, using both sources; the Supernanogan was selected for final delivery to DRAGON. Users reported excellent beam. That run ended last Monday, November 15th, after which time source development ensued. Among other activities, the Supernanogan plasma chamber was opened and cleaned following the 12C run.

  365   Wed Nov 10 09:18:31 2010 Damien Gallop  12C2+ for DRAGON

12C2+ beam established yesterday from the Supernanogan. Tuning to DRAGON began last evening and is continuing presently.

We noticed that MCOL0 no longer has a valid reading. A quick trar suggests it stopped reading at around 17:00 yesterday, right around the beam hand-off time. Also, after working fine since Controls adjusted it a couple of weeks back, the MCIS:RFS water flow meter began toggling its state again around the same time, and a defeat was required to run the RF.

  364   Tue Nov 9 08:42:38 2010 Damien Gallop  12C2+ for DRAGON

A good 12C2+ beam was established yesterday from the Supernanogan source, driven by background pressure only; no source gas actively injected. Beam intensity was not sufficient, so we switched to the MWS. 12C2+ from the MWS sat on FC6 for the night, and grew over the time. Plan today: increase the intensity one way or another.

Later... We're going with the Supernanogan for this one. CO source gas set up via MWS gas manifold. Differential pressure over variable leak provides low enough flow. RF scan in progress presently ~15:00.

  363   Mon Nov 8 09:37:03 2010 Damien Gallop  12C2+ for DRAGON

The 85/87Rb run from the MWS ended last evening as scheduled. The Supernanogan source was brought online (~21:30 Sunday?) and a 12C2+ beam established, first for ICR training then for DRAGON setup.

  362   Fri Nov 5 09:23:53 2010 Damien Gallop  85Rb for Polarizer

Beam was used yesterday. Mostly idle overnight. Looks like a plasma mode change happened at around 19:00 yesterday. It happens. Or perhaps just an artifact again. Shortly after, beam was moved to 87Rb, which is where it is right now. Once again, another milestone first at OLIS: 87Rb from the MWS.

Natural abundance of Rb: Rb-85   ( 72.165% ) Rb-87  ( 27.835% )

Later... Beam switched back to 85Rb.

  360   Wed Nov 3 09:22:38 2010 Damien Gallop  85Rb for Polarizer

Yesterday we handed over a 85Rb beam to ICR. It will be used for a LEBT run using the Polarizer line. Beam stayed on FC6 overnight. Note the source spark at around midnight, after which the bias current readback was higher. Real or artifact?

Later... Beam status over last couple of hours. Looks like tuning has begun.

85Rb on FC6 overnight. After restarting the source yesterday following development, the beam intensity came back, but it's slightly unstable compared to before. Mag stability program is active.

Later... Work with the source for a while. Improved. Stripchart attached. Time will tell. Save: 101102_14:30.snapiosfc6. Turn it over to ICR now.

358   Mon Nov 1 09:30:15 2010 Damien Gallop  MWS Development

The source stayed up steadily over the weekend, with 85Rb on FC6. Not a lot of current, but pretty good for a first pass. More development today. Source settings shown below. As previously noted, the 2.5mm slits are selected. Also, the present IOS tune is for effect, not by the book.

Next up: Try some variations on the source setup.

357   Fri Oct 29 09:41:20 2010 Damien Gallop  MWS Development

MWS source switchover yesterday was successful. Leakchecking went well. A small leak on the intermediate section sealed with a snug on the two bellows fixing bolts. The microwave window required cleaning. It tested leak-tight. All good. Pumpdown curve to come. Meanwhile, source was restarted last night. First 85Rb is on FC6 presently. Although OLIS has run Rb beam in the past using the SIS, this is a milestone for the MWS. Development to proceed today.

Later... Here is the pumpdown curve to last night. Base pressure reached less than 3e-8Torr, which is a very good pressure for the MWS. Prepare to shut down leak detector, which has been pumping on the roughing line overnight.

Later... First piece of a comprehensive mass scan. Brings a tear to my eye. Save: 101029_1125.snapiosfc6

Later... Scans completed. Data file. Among other things, the following isotopes were observed:

356   Thu Oct 28 17:51:49 2010 Damien Gallop  MWS switchover for scheduled 85/87Rb beams

A controls issue with IOS:BIAS was found yesterday. Controls people resolved it today. MWS source was switched over and prepared for Rb beam. Leakchecking done: tight. Source should pump for a little while longer before energizing. At present, leak detector is attached to the IOS roughing line. Pic attached with IOS:BP1 alternately online and offline.

Note: Source gas hand valve is CLOSED.

  354   Wed Oct 27 09:21:59 2010 Damien Gallop  26Mg6+ for TIGRESS EOB

The experiment ran overnight, smoothly, by the looks of it. Beam is on FC6 now, so they're likely done. EOB studies on Mg beam to commence shortly, with source teardown and switchover to Rb beam to follow..

Emittance scans in progress, first at as-delivered settings: 5mm slits. Save: 101027_1102>snapiosfc6

Emittance scans at 26Mg then 24Mg.

Next, go fishing for 85/87Rb in background. Not a lot of fish in this pond... Double-check tune at 24Mg: perfect.

Next up: comprehensive mass scan. Then most likely we will take down the source for clean-up and switchover to Rb beams. Abort due to technical difficulties.

Next up: I just noticed a readable beam at A/q=13.33. Well, that's odd. (We are running 40Ar support gas in the source.) Let's see if it's reproducible. Yep.

Now... IOS bias keeps tripping... Time to investigate... The FUG keeps blowing fuses on reset. But in local mode, it starts and runs just fine. We conclude that its CANBUS card is driving the FUG at full chat on reset. Anyway, F/R#4925.
