Entry  Wed Mar 9 11:09:02 2011, Keerthi Jayamanna, , , IOS:SSW failed

IOS:SSW failed unexpectedly. No reason found. Came back on easily.

Entry  Fri Mar 25 17:42:38 2011, Keerthi Jayamanna, , , OLIS HV start up

High Voltage cage is on at ~17:43pm

Interlock cleard and HV (10kV) is on at 17:53pm

Entry  Tue Mar 29 15:32:08 2011, Damien Gallop, , , Controls and Panel MRO

Controls is working on an interlock issue. Electrical panel MCC-X maintenance is planned for tomorrow afternoon.

Loaned a Horiba SEC-7320 flow controller to Mel. This unit belongs to Friedhelm.

Entry  Fri Apr 1 17:02:09 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 12C2+ for Startup

Supernanogan is online with a bit of 12C2+ beam on FC6. Mag stability program is running. Source development to follow.

Hastings Teledyne flow controller lent to Mel.

Entry  Mon May 2 10:50:28 2011, Damien Gallop, , , Alkalis for DRAGON EOB 7x

DRAGON has been taking various species of Na and Rb using the MWS. Run ended this morning. Emittance scan of 23Na attached. Mass scan in progress.

Entry  Mon May 30 14:44:01 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 22Ne2+ for ICR Training IMG_0093.jpg

MWS online. Separator magstab program offline. Check: Kepco is switched off and one lead is physically cut and taped over. That's pretty definitive.

Later... Keerthi has found that the EPICS probe has more diurnal variation than the separator power supply itself, so he disconnected it permanently. There is a USB issue with using our precision Hall probe that will require some expert Linux assistance to resolve.

MWS online. Note: A/q display is white. Possible culprit: IOSIOC. ICR will reboot it at first convenient opportunity.

Earlier, Supernanogan was set up with empty canister in preparation for Kr heavy ion run planned for this weekend. Canister and lines pumpdown in progress. However, a FR was issued for MCIS:BP1, which is losing ground pretty quickly. The two MCIS screenshots below were taken some five minutes apart. At this rate, there is no way the pump can bring the system to an operational pressure in time. For good measure, power-cycle BP1 now... it doesn't help.

Entry  Fri Jun 10 11:35:24 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 22Ne2+ for TUDA-II Pilot Beam

MWS online. Beam sitting on FC6.

Mel returned two flow controllers today, borrowed in March and April.

Entry  Fri Jun 24 15:11:20 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 58Ni from MCIS to FC6 Setup

OLIS was switched from 22Ne2+ (MWS) to 58Ni+1 (MCIS). Works like magic. 100epA presently.

Entry  Mon Jun 27 10:20:41 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 58Ni from MCIS to TITAN Picture_1.pngPicture_2.png

From MCIS. It looks like things went fairly well over the weekend for them. An interlock glitch on MCIS:IV1 this morning, source pressure went slightly above MCIS:IG1 "Good" threshold. I have suggested to Tiffany that raising the "Good" threshold to 1e-7 might be a good idea. Because we are intentionally running with MCIS:TP3 off, the source pressure is higher. It's right on the edge of the current "Good" threshold. Attached is a trar of the MCIS pressure trend, which looks healthy.

Entry  Tue Jun 28 09:32:09 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 58Ni from MCIS to TITAN Picture_4.png

Beam mostly idle overnight. Things are resuming now.

Entry  Wed Jun 29 09:45:50 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 58Ni from MCIS to TITAN 8x

Last hours and minutes. Going well. Documentation appended. Users have requested beam until noon.

Note: We are using the MWS bias and EE power supplies on the Supernanogan source for this run, to provide source bias and also sputter chamber bias for the Supernanogan.

Entry  Wed Jun 29 15:49:16 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 27Al+1 from MWS Setup grab.Q27242.png

Switchover from 58Ni+1/MCIS to 27Al+1/MWS began just after noon. MWS cleaned and fitted with aluminum liners. Pumping in progress. Good leakup curve. All electrostatics checked and operational. Source should be conditioned to at least 55kV at some point. Let it sit at 30kV overnight with 100W on MW.

Entry  Thu Jun 30 10:02:08 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 27Al+1 from MWS Setup Picture_2.pngPicture_3.pngPicture_4.pngPicture_5.png

Source pumped overnight to previous baseline (red trace on attached Stripchart). IOPS conditioned it up to 42kV without a hitch.

Close Ne source gas line and pump out flow controller... noticeable improvement.

Bias conditioned up to 50kV.

Bias conditioning at 58.5kV with MW at 600W. Raising the RF outgassed the plasma chamber for the first while then went quiet again.

Bias set to 55.08kV for 27Al+1 run. Source lit around 14:30.

15:30: IOS:FC3 = 1.9e-5 (no bias); IOS:FC6 = 9.3e-9. It's coffee time.

16:40: IOS:FC6 = 4.9e-9 (attached)) after settling and a few little tweaks. We're just about ready.

16:45: Hand it over to ICR.

Entry  Sun Jul 3 09:56:47 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 27Al+1 from MWS Setup grab.N30246.pnggrab.e30256.pnggrab.M30261.pnggrab.i30265.pnggrab.X30290.png

A lot has happened since the last entry. The source blinked out at some point. Cause cited was a PE short. Actions were taken, to be detailed later. Source was re-lit. Beam on FC6 was unstable yet promising overnight last night. In the wee hours it blinked out again and is out presently. Remotely checked vital signs. The only thing that appears to require immediate intervention is the source gas line, which looks very closed. ICR assisted with a check on the Ar bottle at the OLIS gas rack. Previous state unknown. ICR opened bottle and shutoff valves. Pressures on regulator are nominal. There is zero flow across the flow controller. ICR is fully involved with 8pi beam services, so cannot open the OLIS cage at this time, etc. One of us will come in.

Later...Source is back. ~6pnA on FC6 at ~17:00.

Synopsis: Source support gas (argon) ran out due to leak in source gas line. Remedied. Bottle replaced. Source relit OK. Beam intensity went in steps.

Later... Some gains with EE. Leaving it at 7kV with 400W of MW power.

Entry  Wed Jul 6 09:56:45 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 27Al+1 from MWS for DRAGON EOB 13x

DRAGON has been taking beam since approximately noon on Monday, and finished a little while ago. Feedback I have received is that beam intensity was lower than experimenters' ideal, but quality of the beam was very good. I will run an emittance scan shortly. Then next up: Mg setup.

Entry  Wed Jul 6 13:20:15 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 24/25Mg+1 from MWS Setup grab.jS3278.pnggrab.FQ5737.png

Source opened, and aluminum components removed. Magnesium components from previous run cleaned and installed. Pumpdown in progress.

Later... Pumpdown looks wonderful. A couple of cycles with partial vent with N2 to help evaporate the methanol.

Later... Power is on. HV at 55kV for the night to condition. No plasma, no beam overnight.

Entry  Thu Jul 7 10:40:27 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 24/25Mg+1 from MWS Setup 6x

Source conditioned nicely overnight at 55kV with a little RF power on. Source gases checked, final cage inspection. Ready to start.

Later... Source is lit. Let it grow.

Later... Lots of beam on FC3 but not a lot on FC6. Beam is broad. Hand it over to ICR for the night as-is.

Entry  Fri Jul 8 10:07:14 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 24/25Mg+1 from MWS for HERACLES on SEBT1 8x

Beam on FC6 overnight and very stable. It grew overnight and continues to grow, but hasn't hit 1pnA yet. Marco is tuning with what he has. Let's see how it goes.

Meanwhile, the last Mg/MWS run occurred on October 27, 2010.

Trar chart of 26Mg on FC6 appended below. The natural abundances of 25Mg and 26Mg are similar.

Later... Marco reports no 25Mg at MEBT. See ISAC elog. Meanwhile, IOS mass scan of 24-26 appended.

Later... Play with source gases a little. Unexpected glitch: IOS vacuum is tanking... Settled at 1.2e-5 Torr. Checking... Looks like front collimator is plugged. Pretty good chance we were generating Mg beams. Meeting of minds... Consensus: Open and clean.

Later... Source opened and cleaned. Backplate and front collimator removed and serviced in the process. Pumping at ~16:15. Leak-up curve looks good.

Later... Source at high vac. Power on. Plasma lit like soft butter. Premature mass scan in progress. Done. MCOL3 restored to 5mm slit settings. Tiny beam on FC6. It can sit and grow overnight.

Hand it over to ICR at ~17:45.
