A/q = 3 Field = 813.2 FC6 = 2.9nA

Beam is too faint for a good emittance scan, but it's visible. Redo with reverse bias, if possible...

Sideshow: IOSIOC reboot for Maintenance. Recovery protracted... Some MWS bias interlock problem. Also, many optics devices were zeroed. (When will this be fixed anyway?) Fortunately the MCIS optics actually stayed in their prior states.

Later... Request Operations reboot IOSIOC, as interlock condition is still there, and it prevents me from seeing A/q. Nothing to lose. Nothing gained either. Graham is here, and we've been discussing stuff. Recently I got the MWS bias on, with glitches. I can no longer turn it off, but that's fine for me. Let's move forward with emittance now.

After many attempts, here is the first emittance scan. Looks like coarsely ground pepper.

  4   Thu May 21 16:23:37 2009 Damien GallopRoutineGeneral18O4+/8+ to TUDA-II declared done around noon

End of run diagnostics done. See ISAC elog. Supernanogan cart is already installed and at high vacuum. Prepare to run 17O from Sgan sometime over the weekend. Today's agenda:

1. Close 18O bottle and gas valves.

2. Isolate IOS:CG0 to minimize pressure contribution from long copper lines.

3. Work around gate valve interlocks.

4. Set up for leak checking: IOS first.

We did some preliminary vacuum checks, and found significant loading on the IOS turbos, probably downstream near DB6. Leak checking now in progress.

67   Mon Jul 13 09:49:52 2009 Damien Gallop  18O4+ tuning to TIGRESS today

As per our agreed deal last week, today is reserved for Supernanogan tuning to TIGRESS. Development will resume tomorrow.

There was a power bump overnight that knocked out many systems, including OLIS. The ISAC elog mentions something about it here. It seems that Keerthi restarted the source. (Note to self: Write an ION with brief restart instructions for the Supernanogan.) 18O4+ beam was left on FC6, and it is very nice, as you can see. Sophia has the beam now.

70   Tue Jul 14 09:47:14 2009 Damien Gallop  18O4+ tuning to TIGRESS this morning

We have a change of schedule. Due to circumstances, Sophia will continue tuning to TIGRESS this morning. Sgan Development will resume this afternoon.

Details: The beam path through the TIGRESS chamber is clear presently, and no detectors are mounted. It is the perfect time to send a nA pilot beam to the end of the line. TIGRESS intends to install electronics starting at noon. Sophia expects to have tuning comfortably completed by then also. She and I have agreed to the following schedule:

Day Principal Time
Tuesday Sophia 09:00-13:00
Tuesday Damien 14:00-17:00
Wednesday Damien 09:00-17:00
Thursday Damien 09:00-17:00
Friday Damien 09:00-11:00
Friday Sophia 11:00-handoff to user

Note: An SC vacuum issue arose this morning, which truncated Sophia's tuning efforts for today. We have agreed to a slightly earlier handover time on Friday, so that she can tune through the chamber. It will be more difficult, as there will be detectors installed by then.

Beam has been on FC6 for an hour or so. It looks pretty good. Stripchart attached. Save: 090714_1231.snapmcissebt3a. Note: There is something fishy about the slit panels. I think an IOC got rebooted somewhere along the line, and the slit motors are out of calibration. I have recorded the pot values in the save file. Emittance scan of Sopohia's 18O4+ beam appended.

107   Mon Jul 20 09:25:35 2009 Damien Gallop  18O4+ run to TIGRESS complete

The 18O4+ run at about 5MeV/u ended this morning with reasonable success, I'm informed, despite MCIS vacuum trips, SC cryo trips and a power bump for good measure. This morning I found beam at FC6 unstable. It appeared to be toggling between plasma states. A little tweak of a few MHz up in microwave frequency not only stabilized it but also multiplied the brightness. Too bad the users didn't have this beam. Emittance scan in progress now.

Next up: 21Ne to TUDA-II. We will begin preparations for switchover to MWS operation shortly. We are discussing a run plan now.

Check beam at FC6. Still toggling. Tweak RF from 15.4790GHz to 15.4823GHz, a change of a mere 3.3MHz, and amplitude from 8.470 to 8.670dB. The RF multiplied the intensity, and the amplitude locked the plasma mode. Sweet! Striptools and final RF settings attached. Too bad we have to shut it down now. Close isolation valves, MCIS optics off, vacuum off. Prepare to access cage. Note: Bias and EL could not be turned off via EPICS.

Repeat emittance scan of present 18O4+ beam. It compares okay (somewhat broader emittance numbers)  with yesterday's scan. Also attached is FC6 beam overnight. Nice.

  50   Wed Jul 8 10:57:46 2009 Damien GallopRoutineGeneral18O4+ emittance scans

Tune saved as 090708_1200.snapmcisfc6. I settled on the 15.486GHz optimal frequency, and tweaked that for effect. Then I ran a few emittance scans. During that process, I noticed that the beam intensity had stepped down and up a few times. So I tweaked the frequency again to return 30enA on FC6. Note that in this process the beam shifted slightly in the horizontal plane. The emittance shape is different also. Attached are emittance scans in sequence, the last one being the "real" one for this test. Finally, before and after RF screens.

15.480GHz => 30.0nA

P.S. Appended is a stripchart of the 18O4+ beam on FC6 following the emittance scans (magenta trace, between T-5 and T-4h). Not bad, eh?
