Damien Gallop | | | 27Al+1 from MWS Setup |
A lot has happened since the last entry. The source blinked out at some point. Cause cited was a PE short. Actions were taken, to be detailed later. Source was re-lit. Beam on FC6 was unstable yet promising overnight last night. In the wee hours it blinked out again and is out presently. Remotely checked vital signs. The only thing that appears to require immediate intervention is the source gas line, which looks very closed. ICR assisted with a check on the Ar bottle at the OLIS gas rack. Previous state unknown. ICR opened bottle and shutoff valves. Pressures on regulator are nominal. There is zero flow across the flow controller. ICR is fully involved with 8pi beam services, so cannot open the OLIS cage at this time, etc. One of us will come in.
Later...Source is back. ~6pnA on FC6 at ~17:00.
Synopsis: Source support gas (argon) ran out due to leak in source gas line. Remedied. Bottle replaced. Source relit OK. Beam intensity went in steps.
Later... Some gains with EE. Leaving it at 7kV with 400W of MW power. |

Damien Gallop | | | 26Mg6+ to TUDA-II source setup |
After EOB activities from 15N4+ run that ended this morning, we have begun preparations to switch over the ion sources. Turbos off just after 11:00. We have Mg source material ready. We will be using the MWS ion source. Due to the requirement to run the source at 53kV, we will also remove the Supernanogan cart from the cage as a sparking precaution.
Later... MWS backplate removed and reworked for Mg operation. Buttoned up and under high vacuum again now. Currently 2.5e-6 Torr at ~14:00.
Later... Plasma is lit. 24Mg begins to be visible after a while.
Note: Supernanogan cart is in its service dock. |

Damien Gallop | | | 26Mg6+ for TUDA-II |
On Saturday we opened the MWS and set it up for Mg operation. Everything went well. We are using the pair of half-moon Mg metal plates together with a thin Mg foil liner inside a bottomless quartz liner. Tune setup for HEBT/SEBT operation set up yesterday. 26Mg is selected. MCOL3A/B tuning for true centre is in progress right now while there is opportunity. |

Beam idle overnight. Beam is being used as a pilot beam for this run. Source was knocked off by a power bump on Monday evening. Signs are that the root cause is the same as last time, loss of 24V to the IOS interlock panel. |

Beam waiting quietly on FC6. There was a power bump on Friday just after noon that tripped the world. Keerthi restarted OLIS. Beam never really came back to its former glory. We'll see if there might be an opportunity to touch it up.
Later... Mag stability program reset required. Internal field probe is at its limit. Hmmm... Meanwhile, revert to EPICS field probe, which unfortunately is not temperature-compensated. |

Beam was redirected to TIGRESS yesterday. RIB delivery to TIDA-II was rendered impossible due to a failure in the target or module. We have a verbal request in place now to change mass from 26Mg1+ to 24Mg1+. Attached is a plot of beam overnight on FC6 prior to changeover. |

MWS ran fine overnight. It was shut off this morning to investigate bias sparking issue, noted on FR#4894. The two MCIS turbopump controllers are displaying gibberish on their front panels this morning. There was one spark since yesterday, around 19:15 last evening. Due to a failure at ITW - see here and here, a proposal is made to deliver 26Mg to the experiment for data. |

Photo-finish for TIGRESS this morning, apart from a cavity trip at around 6:00 a.m.. The MWS is running very well. Some EOB activities underway presently.
Plan for today: MWS pulldown for Mg removal and cleanup. If feasible, we will install the Supernanogan into the OLIS cage as well. |

Damien Gallop | | | 26Mg6+ for TIGRESS EOB |
The experiment ran overnight, smoothly, by the looks of it. Beam is on FC6 now, so they're likely done. EOB studies on Mg beam to commence shortly, with source teardown and switchover to Rb beam to follow..
Emittance scans in progress, first at as-delivered settings: 5mm slits. Save: 101027_1102>snapiosfc6
Emittance scans at 26Mg then 24Mg.
Next, go fishing for 85/87Rb in background. Not a lot of fish in this pond... Double-check tune at 24Mg: perfect.
Next up: comprehensive mass scan. Then most likely we will take down the source for clean-up and switchover to Rb beams. Abort due to technical difficulties.
Next up: I just noticed a readable beam at A/q=13.33. Well, that's odd. (We are running 40Ar support gas in the source.) Let's see if it's reproducible. Yep.
Now... IOS bias keeps tripping... Time to investigate... The FUG keeps blowing fuses on reset. But in local mode, it starts and runs just fine. We conclude that its CANBUS card is driving the FUG at full chat on reset. Anyway, F/R#4925. |

Damien Gallop | | | 26Mg6+ for TIGRESS |
Beam was switched from 24Mg5+ to 26Mg6+ on Canada Day. Also, the source blinked out on Saturday. Remote restart okay. Source is running well.
Supernanogan maintenance continues. MCIS optics module was reassembled last week and installed this morning. Also a section of wveguide was replaced using a specially prepared section. TBD: MCIS:DB1 top place assembly, pump, then reinstall the cart into the cage if possible.
Later... solid target chamber installed with germanium powder, in preparation for an upcoming run. MCIS:DB1 is assembled. Volume is under high vacuum now. Leak detector also set up in preparation for checking tomorrow. |

The MWS was restarted yesterday, and a 26Mg beam re-established. ICR set up into ISAC-II overnight, and tuning to TIGRESS began this morning. Note the experiment change due to circumstances at the RIB targets. |

A 26Mg beam was handed over to TIGRESS last evening. It is 26Mg6+ through ISAC-I and further stripped to 26Mg10+ by the time they get it. Approximately 2.5pnA at FC6. |

Smooth delivery (from OLIS point-of-view) to TIGRESS over the weekend. An SCB RF amplifier failed yesterday and was replaced. Tuning was done. Source is stable.
There were a couple of bias sparks over the weekend, expected during Mg runs. The mag stability program got knocked off at some point. Restart OK. |

The TIGRESS run was scheduled to end at 08:30, but has been extended for 24h. The ICR reports that they are getting "good data" with the present beam. Why mess with what works?
We will expect to begin the MWS switchover tomorrow. |

Damien Gallop | | | 24Mg5+ to TIGRESS setup |
Mass change yesterday morning from 26Mg1+ to 24Mg1+ from the MWS. It was tough to get stable beam from the source, and there are signs of Mg plating out on stuff. Keerthi was here last evening and again overnight to open the source and clean it up. Good job.
Later... There were a couple of power bumps over the lunch hour. One took out OLIS, the other didn't. Yes, the IOS Enable panel had to get a local reset yet again. I have an ECR submitted to Controls for UPS support on the 24V power supply that feeds it. Source restarted reasonably okay. |
