Delivery of 33S6+ to DRAGON continues. A couple of RF tweaks done over the weekend. Source gas canister pressure at -20"Hg. MCIS pressure at 7.3e-8 Torr. At this rate, we could deliver 33S until approximately forever. |

Beam development with 116Sn+18 finished last evening around 21:00. Source was off overnight. 33S material loaded into MCIS oven. Source pumped overnight.
Later... source is lit. 33S+6 on FC6 and growing. |
Wed Oct 5 10:11:28 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 33S from MCIS Source Development
|
The source stayed up overnight. A little RF tweak, but 33S+6 beam still on FC6.
Later... IOS:MCOL3 slits calibration with beam in progress. |

SO2 gas line is connected again. Leak hand valve is closed.
Intermediate section is pumping through source chamber.
CSB development is completed.

Tried to see the background before 33S installation. Found few problems: MCIS:YCB1 does not hold more than 58V.
Very difficult to transport the beam without YCB1. Need to find a solution. Open and fix it is not an option even though we have a ready spare. It will take two weeks to get the vacuum back.

Outgoing TIGRESS experiment was the occasion for another ISAC milestone, 8MeV/u through the SCC for the first time just around midnight last Friday, May 21st. This also represented the first 8MeV/u beam to an experiment. And we can proudly say that OLIS beam was used. TIGRESS run ended at 08:30 as scheduled. Attached is a trar graph of beam on FC6, snapped periodically throughout the run. As before, you can see a small daily variation likely related to temperature of NA-LCW. There were reports of HPL tests this past Thursday and Friday. Evidently no effect over here.

Finally got something going. YCB1 short to the ground. YCB common plate connected to YCB1 power supply. We were lucky. Polarity was right. Ran the source with no 33S.

There have been teething pains developing a good 27Al beam. The Supernanogan sputter source ate through aluminum rods like candy. The MWS worked for a while, but would not hold a sustained plasma. IOS was opened a couple of times to clean the MWS. It ran for a while today, then blinked out. Leak checking is in progress. But the source looks pretty tight from that point of view.
Update at 16:30: Bob has declared EOB for the 27Al run. Next up next week: 22Ne2+, from MCIS if bias will hold comfortably at 22kV. |

|
DRAGON has been taking beam since approximately noon on Monday, and finished a little while ago. Feedback I have received is that beam intensity was lower than experimenters' ideal, but quality of the beam was very good. I will run an emittance scan shortly. Then next up: Mg setup. |
Wed Jun 29 15:49:16 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 27Al+1 from MWS Setup
|
Switchover from 58Ni+1/MCIS to 27Al+1/MWS began just after noon. MWS cleaned and fitted with aluminum liners. Pumping in progress. Good leakup curve. All electrostatics checked and operational. Source should be conditioned to at least 55kV at some point. Let it sit at 30kV overnight with 100W on MW. |
Thu Jun 30 10:02:08 2011, Damien Gallop, , , 27Al+1 from MWS Setup
|
Source pumped overnight to previous baseline (red trace on attached Stripchart). IOPS conditioned it up to 42kV without a hitch.
Close Ne source gas line and pump out flow controller... noticeable improvement.
Bias conditioned up to 50kV.
Bias conditioning at 58.5kV with MW at 600W. Raising the RF outgassed the plasma chamber for the first while then went quiet again.
Bias set to 55.08kV for 27Al+1 run. Source lit around 14:30.
15:30: IOS:FC3 = 1.9e-5 (no bias); IOS:FC6 = 9.3e-9. It's coffee time.
16:40: IOS:FC6 = 4.9e-9 (attached)) after settling and a few little tweaks. We're just about ready.
16:45: Hand it over to ICR. |
