10   Friday, September 23, 2011, 16:40 Anders Mjos      Problems/Solutions9-pin connectors swapped on source tray

Friday, September 23, 2011, 16:3: The connection on the 9-pin connector for FEBIAD targets showed burn marks from the previous FEBIAD tests. Corresponding mark was found on the connector on the target side. Because of this the upper and lower 9-pin connectors were swapped to have a clean connector for the next FEBIAD target.

  • While testing SiC#26 a leak was discovered on the water line to the heat shield. The leak was in the right joint (see attachment). The heat shield water lines were removed from the test stand and repaired in the Machine Shop.
  • Kapton was added to the FEBIAD coil line to prevent it from shorting to the target heater line (see attachment).

The leak valve has been tested with He and a leak detector. The leak valve could regulate in the complete range of the leak detector. 10^-11 to 10^-4 atm cc/s

  77   Friday, April 20, 2012, 08:56 Anders MjosNb#6LP-SISITWTM1  Problems/SolutionsInsulator stand-off failure

When the target was removed from the test stand it was discovered that the custom designed insulator stand-off (ITD0400 made from Mycroy 1100) had swollen and become discoloured in the area exposed to "heat shine" from the target oven. See attached pdf for photos of the insulators.

The heat shield lid was opened up and the target temporarily removed to replace the two insulators that had failed. These were replaced with the commercially available glazed steatite stand-offs. The target had some marks from the insulators which was cleaned with acetone and methanol.

After replacing the insulators, the target assembly was assembled, leak checked and a new electrical check was performed.

The chip came from the lower insulator stand-off on the target assembly (see attachment). After investigating the chipped insulator, it was decided (Pierre, Friedhelm, Anders) not to replace it - as the risk involved may be less than the risk involved in replacing.
