Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 12:15: Blanked off cooling lines. Chamber ready to be pumped down.

Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 12:16: TSGRP1 makes unusual noise when attempting to pump down vacuum chamber. Roughing aborted for now. Edi Dalla Valle is informed. He will have a look at it after lunch.

When the target was removed from the test stand it was discovered that the custom designed insulator stand-off (ITD0400 made from Mycroy 1100) had swollen and become discoloured in the area exposed to "heat shine" from the target oven. See attached pdf for photos of the insulators.

The heat shield lid was opened up and the target temporarily removed to replace the two insulators that had failed. These were replaced with the commercially available glazed steatite stand-offs. The target had some marks from the insulators which was cleaned with acetone and methanol.

After replacing the insulators, the target assembly was assembled, leak checked and a new electrical check was performed.

The bottle with Al(CH3)3 was removed from the test stand yesterday April 25.

comments in e-mail from Marik:

Anders & I took the Al(CH3)3 bottle out of the test stand & put it in the middle fume hood of lab 07.  There was some puffs of white "smoke" when Anders unscrewed the VCR coupling.  Likely some trapped liquid that oxidized on air exposure.  If at all possible, I would suggest a vertical orientation in the Faraday cage.

A chip of insulator material was detected below the lower target insulator stand-off (attachment - left picture). The chip may come from the tube heater insulator above (attachment - right picture). The chip will be further investigated when the target is removed.
