A vanadium wire was introduced in a tantalum pouch and snug among the graphite foils of a conditioned graphite target. The V wire was introduced in the Ta pouch to prevent the direct contact of the wire with the carbon and avoid the reaction between them.

As a first approach, the target will be heated to approximately 1377 °C, aiming at the vaporization temperature of the V wire. If the wire does not vaporize, heating with the turbo pump off would be considered to aim at the vanadium's melting point of 1910 °C.

Plan:

  • The temperature of the tube will be measured from the side on a Ta-foil cap with a two-colour pyrometer, and from the center with a filament pyrometer (a pinhole was made on the tantalum tube heat shields to allow looking at the tube.
  • The temperature registered by the omega will be used as a rough reference of the temperature range at which the V wire is either melting or vaporizing.

    • The pressure will be closely monitored to have a reference for the V vaporization.

  • Initial ramping: 2 A/min to 200 A.

    Expected temperature: approx. 1100 °C. Estimated ramping duration

In case of outgassing, let the pressure reduce
  • Next ramping: 0.5 A/ 2min  to 250 A.

Very slow rate to allow thermal equilibrium and temperature measurements. Estimated time 3h.

Thursday, August 15, 2024, 08:21

IGP1 = 5.3e-7 Torr

Good vacuum 3e-5 Torr

Bad vacuum 5e-5 Torr

Initial ramping: 2 A/min to 200 A.

Thursday, August 15, 2024, 09:01. Pressure starting to increase at 74 A

Thursday, August 15, 2024, 09:15. Pressure stabilizing 1.8e-6 Torr. Current 103 A, voltage 1.3 V

Thursday, August 15, 2024, 09:21. Pressure increasing (116 A).

 Thursday, August 15, 2024, 09:29 Pressure dropping (Current approx. 120 A)

Thursday, August 15, 2024, 10:54

Started ramping to find a pressure peak corresponding to V vaporization.

IGP1 = 6.4e-7

TGHT = 200 A, 2.9 V, omega 1152 °C

Next ramping: 0.5 A/ 2min  to 250 A

Thursday, August 15, 2024, 11:17

Ramp seem to slow. The temperature change was too subtle (according to the omega).

IGP1 = 6.5e-7

TGHT = 205 A, 3.03 V, omega 1157 °C

Next ramping: 1 A/ 2min  to 250 A

Thursday, August 15, 2024, 11:32

Ramp changed to 0.5 A/min

Thursday, August 15, 2024, 11:54

Ramp was stopped because the pressure was increasing, suggesting the V vaporization.

IGP1 = 6.9e-7

TGHT = 222 A, 3.3 V

Omega 1210 °C, filament 1280 °C

The difference between pyrometers is negligible, suggesting that the V vaporization temperature at 6e-7 Torr of approx. 1300 °C

 Thursday, August 15, 2024, 13:15

IGP1 = 7.9e-7

TGHT = 250 A, 3.8 V

Omega 1289 °C

Thursday, August 15, 2024, 13:16

Ramp set to 0.5 A/min to 300 A

 Pressure mini-spike at 13:18

Omega reading 1291 °C

Thursday, August 15, 2024, 14:08

IGP1 = 8.5e-7

TGHT = 270 A, 4.18 V

Omega 1375 °C, filament 1400 °C

The system stayed at those conditions for 15min

 Target mounted in EVAP2. Pump down started

Friday, October 16, 2020, 12:05

Pressure goes up. Checked with Ferran and he says that the valve IEVAP2:RV1 automatically closes sometimes. WEIRD, to be chacked.

Friday, October 16, 2020, 15:20

IGP2 bottoms at 0.2T, and doesn't increase recover if I close RV1 while it shouldn't (as shown before). --> Vented to restart from scratch

Friday, October 16, 2020, 15:45

Pumped down again, vacuum went down to 0.16 and then started raising until ~0.18. This time the valve was open indeed! opening and closing the valve had no effect on the vacuum as if the  booster pump was not effective

Friday, October 16, 2020, 16:27

Tried a THIRD time, this time effectively, to turn the turbo ON. I managed to, but the turbo makes weird spinning sounds every ~30 sec. Moreover, its pumping down plot seems quite weird  - see spike UP while pumping. Could it be related to a dysfunction of the backing pump?

After the boat was heated for ~4hrs, TGHT tripped off on IEVAP2:TBHT2 (see attachment #1, #2).

Tried clearing the water interlock via EPICS - failed to clear.  Checked the local water valves - ALL VALVES are OPEN

Tried closing and re-opening the IEVAP2:TBHT2 valves, interlock cleared after a few minutes.

Maybe a fault in the water signal.  If it happens again, the water signal should be replaced.

Turned back on the power supply - TGHT current/voltage are holding.  Target boat may be OK!

Chamber is a bit warm now.  Will allow time to cool down.

Will vent the chamber tomorrow and the boat will be inspected.

A new target boat was sprayed with TaC coating and let dry this morning.

The target boat is NOT wrapped with Ta-heat shield.

The boat was installed in Evap#2, chamber is currently being pumped down overnight.

 Tuesday, January 21, 2014, 11:10

Chamber was pumped down to ~2e-7 Torr. HS cooling water valves were opened, no leaks detected.

TGHT was stepped up to 35A, voltage max set at 13V. TBHT currently @ 0A.

Waited ~20min, current stabilized, vacuum started to drop, auto-ramp initiated at 2.0A/min and max setpoint to 700A.

Good vacuum: 3.00e-5 Torr, Bad vacuum 4.00e-5 Torr.

 Tuesday, January 21, 2014, 11:51

Vacuum was grumpy and was well on it's way to tripping off [reached 5e-5 Torr], auto ramping was stopped at ~95A and quickly stepped down to 90A to avoid tripping it off.

Allowed vacuum to settle back down to 2.3e-6 Torr. Auto ramping changed to 0.2A/min and re-started.

 close-call!

 Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 09:46

TGHT has been slowly ramping up overnight at a rate of 0.2A/min.

IGP1 = 2.9e-7 Torr, TGHT = 342A; stepping ramping rate up to 2.0A/min.

 Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 13:43

TGHT is sitting at 693A, IGP1 = 1.3e-6 Torr.

Stepping up TGHT voltage up to 14V from 13.05V to reach the max current of 700A.

 Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 15:09

TGHT reached to 700A/12.83V.  Local temperature on the boat surface was measured at ~1500C.

Target will be heated for a few hours and will be cooled down later tonight.

The chamber will be vented tomorrow and the boat will be inspected.

 Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 18:09

 Thursday, January 23, 2014, 16:18

Chamber vented overnight and was opened up this morning.

Target boat not fully sintered [see attached photos].

Chamber currently being pumped down again in order to continue with sintering TaC coating.

HS cooling water valves were opened, no leaks detected.

Will ramp up to 700A again over the weekend.

 Friday, January 24, 2014, 14:21

Chamber was pumped down to 1.7e-7 Torr.

TGHT was stepped up to 35A, voltage max set at 14V. TBHT currently sitting at 0A.

Waited 20min, vacuum consistently stable. Auto-ramp initiated at 2.0 A/min and max setpoint to 700A.
