134   Tue Sep 15 09:54:22 2009 Damien Gallop  16O3+ run to DRAGON ended on schedule at 08:00

The DRAGON run ended uneventfully. (That's a good thing.) I ran a few emittance scans on the beam as-is. It is clearly monoisotopic. The shape is a little odd. Keerthi will comment on it in a while. Here are some pix. Below the emittance control panel are pix of the same beam at wider settings. Only the one 16O3+ peak is present. Finally, at the bottom is a pic of various parameters, the most important of which is COL0, which reflects the stability of the total beam from the source.

Delivery of 16O3+ for TIGRESS "buddy beam" purposes ended early Tuesday morning, followed by CSB setup as an ion source Tuesday day. MWS behaved very nicely. Beam off Wednesday morning for switchover.

  324   Fri Jul 30 09:09:35 2010 Damien Gallop  16O3+ for TIGRESS

Supernanogan is online. Setup done last night. There is room for tweaking, but stable 3enA on FC6 of 16O3+ presently. We'll see if ICR has room for tweaking before handover to users. Yes, we have clearance.

MCIS RF scan in progress.

MCIS vacuum: 8.17e-8 Torr

IOS vacuum: 3.15e-7 Torr

Later... No-one has called so far for the beam, but they can have it anytime. Right now, about 15enA on FC6 with an RF frequency that is midway between lots of current and ruler-flat stability. There are other choices too.

Beam idle for most of the weekend. Some ion source ups and downs, in part due to a WFB setting on the edge. Tuning began last evening. Some funny business overnight with apparently disappearing and returning beam.

  323   Thu Jul 29 18:12:38 2010 Damien Gallop  16O3+ Setup

So... the long-awaited word to switch OLIS beams and sources finally came through... at 17:45. Luverly. Anyway, we're on it. Basic idea: 4He1+/MWS -> 16O3+/MCIS. Users only care about A/q being as close to 72/13 as possible using standard beams. Last moments of 4He beam shown below. MWS is running very nicely.

Later... Supernanogan is up and delivering 16O3+. Note that MWS solenoid valves and flow controller are just so for this to be possible. Leave them alone.

Later... Mass scans and some optimization. All better. Intensity is still drifting and will overnight.

33   Wed Jun 24 10:27:23 2009 Damien GallopRoutineGeneral16O2+ tune ready for Sophia and Marco

See ISAC elog entry today.  Keerthi developed a dual-mode tune last night, so that we can run the MWS at will if so desired. Save file: 090624_0930.snapmcisfc6. Emittance scans done. Overnight FC6 also attached. Sophia took the beam at 10:00.

Note: This is an updated emittance plot. The bias voltage was incorrect in the original datafile, therefore so were the emittance calculations. The plot itself is identical.

34   Mon Jun 29 10:35:35 2009 Damien GallopRoutineGeneral16O2+ pilot beam to TACTIC in progress

We handed over a 16O2+ beam on Wednesday morning to Sophia for TACTIC setup. On our side, everything went well. TACTIC switched to RIB on Saturday night. See ISAC elog entry. We remain on standby for pilot beam. Schedule switched to development tomorrow morning. Attached is a stripchart of our beam for the last several hours. As good as it gets! Save file: 090629_1730.snapmcisfc6.

  31   Tue Jun 23 16:48:00 2009 Damien GallopRoutineGeneral16O2+ on FC6 after source tuning

After a first round of source and line tuning for good current with minimum RF power, we have about 8nA of 16O2+ on FC6. Here is an emittance scan of that. Present RF settings are 15.438GHz and -1.0dB with less than 1W of RF power. Bias is 16.32KV. Let's do some bias conditioning for a bit.

  30   Tue Jun 23 15:02:38 2009 Damien GallopRoutineGeneral16O2+ on FC6

We now have about 80nA of 16O2+, using the same source parameters as before. Keep a watch for a while, then tune the source to match user's needs, somewhere in the 10nA range.

Here is a stripchart of the 16O2+ beam for the last half-hour or so., and also the stripchart of it juxtaposed with 16O7+ earlier. Also a first 16O2+ emittance scan for this run. I will do source tuning with it momentarily.

First, with upstream slits opened, then with both open. Original slit setting was 1mm. Finally, restore slits to 1mm and see if it reproduces. It does.

  37   Tue Jun 30 10:56:26 2009 Damien GallopRoutineGeneral16O2+ emittance scans

The first emittance scan sort of got interrupted; it auto-restarted just before the previous scan had finished. I thought the resulting plot was somewhat interesting. The emittance isn't half-bad either. A better scan follows. TACTIC took beam again for a while this afternoon to shake down a timing discrepancy. We got it back around 4pm. One more emittance scan for good measure.

  308   Wed Jul 7 15:21:36 2010 Damien Gallop  16O1+ for SCC Commissioning

A 16O1+ beam from the MWS is being used for SCC development and commissioning by agreement. Some sideshows getting there.

Later... At approximately 13:15, some event, a bias spark, it appears, took out a number of devices, most of which IOPS reset. The FUG blew a fuse on startup. Replacement OK. However, there remains an interlock light on the IOS:BIAS panel with no apparently unsatisfied interlocks showing. Controls is checking now (~15:00). Cause appeared to be an old version of a startup script on IOSIOC. The script has been updated so that this particular fault should not recur. Source restarted okay, but it took some doing to get the separator magnet back. It is still not optimized, but Marco can take it from here.

  253   Mon Apr 26 10:58:46 2010 Damien Gallop  16O1+ at 32.64keV to SEBT2

Our first experiment of the year started right around midnight last night, after extensive tuning. As I understand it, S1151 will confirm the age of the universe. The MWS source performed flawlessly over the weekend.

  254   Tue Apr 27 09:04:13 2010 Damien Gallop  16O1+ at 32.64keV to SEBT2

Nominal beam operation to SEBT2 overnight. A chart of beam over the last few days is attached. There is a step change in the separator field right around midnight. Although the archive does not show it, in fact this was adjusted at 23:54 last night.

Later...MCISRFIOC PC up again, with many thanks to Shawn @ Controls. The black MCISRFIOC computer, atop of the IOS racks, was found to be dead a few days ago. We originally thought that this was a consequence of last Monday's power bump. However, the attached archive plot suggests that it in fact failed on April 21st. Controls confirmed extensive hardware damage, and rebuilt the machine. It is up again now, and operational as it was before. I ran the MCIS RF and did an RF scan for good measure. It all works.

Beam delivery continued nicely through the night.

Yesterday Controls repaired and reinstalled the MCISRFIOC computer. It is working well. More details to come.
