D.H.W.R Leak |

A pin hole leak was found in the previously repaired D.H.W.R waterline. Soldering of new copper pipe was done. The fire alarm 051-046 in the ISAC Cold Lab was disabled. We removed a copper pipe section out into the hallway and stopped around 6 ft past the door to the ISAC cold lab. We did find a second smaller leak outside past the door.
Background:
-Fri 03/03/2017 15:00 - The emergency shower was tested. The water was too dirty & hot for proper use and a leak was detected. Water @ 55 degrees C.
-Fri 03/03/2017 17:00 - A water leak was noticed on the D.H.W.R line. Hot water to the Cold lab was shut down.
-15/03/17 Between 11:00 & 14:45 – The corroded copper pipe section was replaced, however a small leak turned up further up the copper pipe the next day.
Summary: The corroded copper pipe section was replaced beyond the ISAC Cold lab door; however the pipe is not fully insulated yet. The Main Control Room was called for the smoke alarm to be re-activated.
Noteworthy comments:
-The new pipe may require insulation.
-The water quality was poor coming from the pipe. The water was run continuously for around 20 minutes before it developed clarity.
-There were other pieces of pipe wrapped in amongst the copper pipe. One piece appeared to be steel, but was quite corroded
-Some of the insulation was quite rotted and crumbled to dust during handling. In the event of any other leak repairs, a respirator is highly recommended.
-The pipe removed was quite corroded both in the ID and OD. Likely other pipe in the area is in similar condition. Something to be mindful of as further leaks may occur over time.
